Ray Hudson has joined CBS. He will be with Dre Cordero for the PSG – Juve match.

Woooooooo! While watching some La Liga the low key/boring commentary began to stand out and realized Ray gave La Liga matches an air of importance and excitement that ESPN is sorely lacking. Great to have him back (for those of us who don’t watch Inter Miami).
Really helps when the commentators love of the game oozes out during the broadcast, Ray has that in spades. Even though the English commentary for Brasileirao isn’t top notch, they have it as well.

The commentating is terrible. A single commentator sitting in a room, miles away, watching the delay and commenting alone is just pathetic. The thing that makes Premier League on Peacock so great is the commentating team and their interaction.

CBS broacasted both 1st legs of the Semi-Finals but right now only scheduled to show Real v Man C on Wed, not Tuesday Villarreal v Liverpool. I am only seeing regular CBS daytime schedule right now on Tuesday so i do not see why they would not show it. Anyone know why CBS is not broadcasting match?.

    • Christopher Harris

      May 2, 2022 at 9:47 am

It could be one of a few reasons. Either they thought the second leg is a “dead rubber” (i.e. Liverpool already has one foot in the final), so fewer people would be interested in watching the game. Or, knowing how many Liverpool fans there are in this country, they want to encourage them to sign up for Paramount+. Or maybe there was a scheduling conflict with their regular programming.

    January 22, 2022 at 8:17 pm

@Arthur Kinney, it must be due to the clock change making the time difference only 5hours instead of 6 and pushing the matches to 4pm starts. High likelihood they would cut into the 6pm national news broadcasts

  7. Arthur Kinney

    January 22, 2022 at 7:12 pm

Is the lack of CBS games on March 15th and 16th just a matter of CBS not having selected the games yet or is CL Tue./Wed. and NCAA hoops Thu./Fri. impossible because it would pre-empt more local news in a week than the FCC allows?

Great news. Do you expect Univision to match that number in OTA only matches through the main network and UniMas? They probably will.

    December 21, 2021 at 9:38 am

Maybe with EPL bidding over there’s the realization or clearer focus they need to promote their current properties as best as possible to drive P+ signups instead of the hoped for EPL boost next year.

So little attention so far about news UCL round of 16 matches will be on over the air CBS. Absolutely huge!
Good to see them making such a strong push after limiting how many matches were even on CBSSN years prior.
Maybe we can get some Serie A on CBS too when NFL season is over. They have been increasing the number on CBSSN recently I’ve noticed.

It’s good news, I agree. We tweeted about it yesterday at https://twitter.com/worldsoccertalk/status/1473050340157231110 and updated the UEFA Champions League schedule page accordingly.

I thought it’s a bit strange announcing it now though. The games aren’t until February.

    @JP
Sort of agree with you there and I put it down to that they are trying to find their feet or best practices. Another words they don’t have an idea yet what is popular for any individual user. I hope that once they have enough user data that this will be reflected in the layout of the Paramount+ home page.
    .
In the meantime I created in the section “My List” entries for what I want to navigate to quickly, without having to click and go through menus. I have in “My List” entries for Serie A, UCL, UEL, UEL Conference and the CONCACAF Qualifiers plus a few other non sports links. It is a workaround until they get their act together.
    .
In some ways it reflects what Microsoft has done with windows in the very beginning, trying o convince users that this is the navigation that they want. At times they were right and we changed our way of doing things at other times we created solutions to let us do things the way we want to do them. This User Interface Design and strategy was necessary in the beginning to set standards, like where the File menu is what should be under the Help part. I sometimes get the feeling the streaming service likewise should establish standards in their page layouts, but good luck with that as there is no such thing as a single controlling mechanism as it is in the Windows world.

Before 10:30 went to Paramount+ for the Atalanta match (didn’t know moved to 1pm). In the Live TV section they’ve now added numerous new sections and pushes the Live sports far down the list. Not an upgrade!

Live TV used to make finding a match so quick, now with new 15+ curated channels (all content that can be found on demand, not really “Live”) before it even gets to the Sports it makes a mess of the Live navigation.

Big thumbs down to this change.

Do people pay real money for Paramount+, a service that can’t have a basic function like pause/rewind? Really? Nowadays, even “links” (usually provided by tech-savvy teenagers) are starting to implement that function. What does Paramount+ take their soccer fans for? I discarded after the 7-day trial long time ago.

  15. Turfit

    December 7, 2021 at 8:41 pm

@Ra “I get furious with reliability issues. But to me, my key issue with Paramount+ is the lack of rewind and timely on-demand matches. I don’t think any matches that just ended at 5 pm will be available before 7-8 pm.”
I turned on the PSG match 7 minutes into the game and it was 2-0, I forgot I could not rewind and tried. I got mad and change the channel to TUDN in Fubo and watch the ENTIRE match in Spanish (I do not know Spanish). At halftime I canceled Paramount+ (I got annual subscription that runs out in a few months).
Later, after trying to watch the Atletico match on Par+, I’m glad I’m canceling. Thinking I’m going to get Rosetta Stone with the money I save to learn Spanish!!!

You All do know that AWS went down – and large parts of the internet have suffered long-lasting issues after multiple outages took down large parts of Amazon Web Services (AWS) network. Data from real-time outage monitoring service DownDetector saw the incident begin at roughly 12:00 ET/15:30 GMT, with thousands of users having registered problems across Europe, Asia and the US.
    .
Along with Amazon.com, other major websites including Facebook and Disney Plus, and more appeared to be suffering issues, alongside Amazon services such as Alexa, Prime Video, Ring, and Chime.
    .
It could have been that this may have been at fault from some of the difficulties.

    December 7, 2021 at 6:36 pm

@Michael F. The explanation is easier than that. I was giving a real example. I used ESPN+ to watch a couple of Bundesliga games and Paramount+ to watch late-night shows. I would use HBOMax to stream a movie, but the low bit rate through my phone and the TV there was not up to my standards to watch a movie.

  19. Michael F

    December 7, 2021 at 6:15 pm

@Mercator. Ahh… but you are comparing apples to oranges again, and not what it costs Sling over and above what one would pay for Peacock to get all EPL matches live. And again, your comparison is like comparing Netflix to the Criterion channel stream service. Difference price points and completely different content. Just because it’s soccer, it’s not the same soccer or league (debate all you want what is the better league or quality of soccer)… doesn’t matter. It still comes down to what the consumer is willing to pay for. You choose to not pay and complain about it. It is still much cheaper to watch this content here than in the host country, where you would be blacked out of matches weekly. And all these matches can be viewed on delay for only $5. But that’s never good enough for the incredibly demanding ‘I want everything and I want it now’ soccer fan living in the States. Smile.

  20. Mercator

    December 7, 2021 at 6:05 pm

@Michael F – You do the math, what is $35 (Sling) plus $5 (Peacock)? How many times greater is this sum than the $5 P+ changes for UCL/Seria A, etc? This isn’t an opinion, it’s 8x as much. I would complain about CBS more but I actually haven’t had an outage issue, this week or last week, and I just don’t care about UCL like Arsenal. Still its unacceptable to be putting games on a service that isn’t working on matchdays – no one makes excuses for services who do that except for you.

@Ra – Yes, the several hour delay to show the highlights is my biggest issue with Paramount+. Sometimes I’ll get back from the office and you can see some games/commentary are uploaded, but then it will still be hours for the remaining games/commentary to get uploaded. I’m not sure how that works but I usually just end up checking the highlights on Youtube for this reason.

I still love the CBS studio for UCL though. Great bit today brining in Grant Wahl. I know it has been discussed before that things can be gimmicky and intended for daily mail readers the next morning, but I think they do a pretty good job overall when Carragher is in a serious mood.

  21. Michael F

    December 7, 2021 at 6:04 pm

@Ra. You are right. You should not pay extra for something YOU feel is a waste of your money. Your preference. I was simply pointing out that it is nonsense to suggest a cable-like live tv stream subscriber is paying many times over more for EPL matches than streamers only, as they choose to pay for this service for several things. That is their preference to have it.

Btw… you could easily use your UBC-c to HDMI cable to stream any live tv stream provider (just like ESPN+ or P+) if you so desired to have that subscription. Just pointing that out as it seems funny to suggest that only these two streaming services are within reach for situations like you described.

  22. Ra

    December 7, 2021 at 5:57 pm

@Michael F. The issue at hand here is (lack of) options. For Thanksgiving, I rented a cabin with no internet – but DirecTV was available. What a cesspool! The few watchable movies are edited for length and had numerous commercial breaks. For sports, I watch soccer almost exclusively – there is not a lot to choose from. Why would I pay much more than my fair share to subsidize sports I am absolutely not interested in or conspiracy theories? Zapping DirecTV for a few minutes left a bad taste in my mouth. Why on earth would I like to subsidize that?

What did I do? Used my USB-c to HDMI cable to stream ESPN+ and Paramount+ from my phone. I can not find utility on cable even when it is “free”…

  23. Michael F

    December 7, 2021 at 5:23 pm

@Mercator. I’d like to also point out your indulgence over continually inflating the numbers of the cost for acquiring access to all EPL matches. As everyone knows, Sling TV is available for $30 to $35 per month for anyone that must get this content.

I’d like to also point out that MOST consumers that have a cable-like live TV stream service, don’t just have it for ONE single thing. That is the misconception from those cable cord cutters (ie streamer only) that show such disdain for cable-like subscribers. I personally would have a hard time justifying my current YouTube TV sub if I only used it to view the EPL matches. I use it this live TV stream service constantly for American based sports aired only behind a cable paywall and lots and lots of old classic TCM movies etc.

To suggest I am paying way too much for the EPL, is misconstrued and misunderstood, and is a classic rebuff by cable cord cutters like yourself.

I personally don’t have a major preference over one way (live tv stream) or the other (streaming apps) — but I do care that it is reliable and provides the quality I expect for the money I spend on it. For all who want to debate whatever service is quality or a waste of money, I am generally happy to what I am subscribed with, and use it extensively.

I get furious with reliability issues. But to me, my key issue with Paramount+ is the lack of rewind and timely on-demand matches. I don’t think any matches that just ended at 5 pm will be available before 7-8 pm.

Regarding Peacock, my 2nd key objection (besides the lack of all live matches) is the 30fps. It is interesting to see that apparently, NBC does not consider 60fps important. In my region, all other OTA channels are broadcasting @720p while NBC is at 1080i (which means roughly 30fps, as the TV does 540 alternate scans).

  25. Michael F

Apple TV w/ Comcast internet, no problems at all with the 12:30 pregame, Man City Leipzig or Liverpool Milan.

  29. Mercator

    December 7, 2021 at 4:34 pm

@Michael F – Everything has been working fine for me on ATV today, although I admit I usually watch the Golazo and have not tried every specific match stream. Yet, I have had issues on Peacock. Point being, both services are pretty poor from a reliability standpoint, although P+ issues have not affected me yet. CBS gets a pass from me because the games are still on TV, and its only $5 bucks. Very very different from Peacock, where the games are not also on TV and you are paying 8x as much.

But unlike you, I do not like spending my free time defending media companies for no reason, so I have no problem admitting Paramount+ is trash in terms of reliability given the complaints this week and last. If I were having issues, I would simply watch alternatively as well, and encourage anyone having issues with P+ to do the same.

Yes indeed. For $5, and what good is it if the matches they air have continuous issues. And for that… I say TOUCHE!

@SteveK. Very good advice indeed. I have several devices to access these stream services as well. Apple TV, Roku and Samsung Smart TV. Not to mention the portable tablets (iPad Pro etc) and Windows PC.

It should also be mentioned that the harsh reality is that streaming services of live broadcasts are still maturing and yes, sometimes the old adage is you get what you pay for. After all, it is a very small fee per month to access this live content, so maybe the frustration should be proportionate with the cost. I am sure is not what people want to hear, but I don’t think these separate company owned stream services like Paramount+ are the end all be all solution.

Be careful, Michael F, the last thing we need are those Comcast haters, smug and self-satisfied in their derision of the $5 a month Peacock to also turn against Paramount+ because then we’d have to read interminable posts about how Peacock really needs to be more like ESPN+

Every now and then you come across a post that’s so wise and prescient it is worth repeating, such as this from dave barely 3 weeks since the last time Paramount+ screwed up in a big way with its most prominent Soccer property:

“I find it helpful to have 2+ ways to access any streaming content. It is not common but also not overly rare that my primary access fails for something I want to watch. Xfinity Flex does not enjoy a flawless reputation, so a secondary access may be of value given your situation.
    .
If your TV has a spare HDMI slot and you are OK with a one-time $40 spend, you may benefit from a device like “Roku Express 4K+”. There is no monthly fee for Roku unless you buy apps and your existing Paramount+ subscription can be linked at no added charge
    .
You could load a Roku with only Paramount+ and only plug it in to your TV’s HDMI when you want to watch live soccer and Flex is letting you down.“

    Great advice, dave.

Why do you guys put up with Paramount+? Why are you paying them for crappy service? This is not the first time I’m reding comments about service interuptions (buffering, freezing, login issues, losing signal, you name it.) I’ve been reading the same comments since Paramount+ acquired the rights. I’m not paying those thieves a dime. The UEFA Champions League, Europa League & Conference League need a new home in the USA. Paramount+/CBS Sports can go to hell.

  53. Hans

The Paramount+ app on my Win10 is requiring Edge to be used and it worked for me on a Win 10 Intel NUC FIOS connection. The juggling of apps and browser displaying matches will be an ongoing struggle until they mature both display options. Look at Roku and their recent software update killing both Netflix & YouTube apps and they are in the app business quite a bit longer.
    .
For Apple devices it may be advantageous to have an additional browser like Chrome or Fire Fox installed. Because Apple has their own ecosystem the browser is the most common denominator for displaying anything in Apple.

Spoke too soon, PSG match lost signal and now seems the entire App is broken. Also won’t work on my phone, and can’t login on a browser!

Also, Club Brugge down 3, so this PSG match basically worthless anyway.

So that much more reliable streaming service than Peacock is having another massive problem right now…I was watching City PSG and bam, signal gone

@Ra, glad it wasn’t just me. So far so good today, starting at 10:30am.

The hope for 3pm matches are 3 points for City and Brugge, so there would faint hope of Club Brugge pulling of the shocker in Paris and advancing to round of 16 over PSG in the final match.

@JP Same issue here. Tried to watch on my Galaxy Tab, but had many issues when starting the streams. The Bayern game at 12:30 worked flawlessly tough (and what a goal by Lewandowski!)

Anyone else having issues when changing matches today? Tried switching to Barcelona from Lille, but got the error message (something wrong, working on it, etc), but then all the matches had the error, now it’s hit or miss if it works. Had Barca working, switched to test, not working again. Lille was broken, ok at the moment.
    This is on Apple TV

@gigio, that sounds very frustrating. Similar to what @SteveK writes, I find it helpful to have 2+ ways to access any streaming content.
There is no monthly fee for Roku unless you buy apps and your existing Paramount+ subscription can be linked at no added charge
    .
You could load a Roku with only Paramount+ and only plug it in to your TV’s HDMI when you want to watch live soccer and Flex is letting you down. Amazon Fire Stick is similar to Roku and some strongly prefer one to the other. Just an idea or two in case you want to research further.

gigio, I have Comcast cable and internet like you and am able to watch Paramount+ just fine, but I do not have Xfinity Flex, I set my own home network up, I use my own modem, router and wireless base stations and don’t rely on anything supplied or rented from Comcast. I also have an Apple TV 4 at all my TVs and both peacock and Paramount+ have largely been seamless on those. When I’ve had a glitch, it has been network wide and unrelated to Comcast. (I have an iPad Pro with T Mobile data just for those times it is Comcast related and can Airplay to the big screen in an emergency.) Maybe you’ll have more success watching live games via the Paramount+ app on a different device?

@ greg/JP well for the most part P+ works ok on laptop…. my issue is i wanna watch serieA and CL on my 40 inch Phillips tv. as it was promised i could do when i purchased a year subscript. but calcio live schedule doesnt even work, and every CL, Europa match lose the stream multiple times during live feed. its such garbage. basically stuck only able to watch replays day later, but what good is that ?
below is the return email i got after my complaint :
    Dear Mike,
Thank you for your patience while we investigated this issue. After further investigations of this issue, our product team has advised after multiple troubleshooting steps, we are unable to resolve this issue as the live feeds for Serie A at this time are no longer supported on Xfinity Flex anymore; however, you can view match replays on Xfinity Flex for these matches. If you are interested in watching these matches live, please use another supported device. For a list of supported devices, please visit: https://help.paramountplus.com/s/article/PD-Supported-Devices.

    Thank you for understanding!

@STEVEK pfft i still havent been able to watch a single CL or Europa match on tv with out getting the /error code something went wrong/ BS. 3 times during match streams! its like why even bother watching. total garbage and on top of that i cant dont even get a live schedule of serie A anymore. i can only watch the replays but whats the good in that ?! its the only reason i purchased a $50 year subscript was for calcio. the customer service emails me back saying there nothing we can do to fix the issue, serie a doesnt work with comcast cable wifi ..yea but it worked during free trial.

    November 3, 2021 at 9:04 pm

The Golaço show has been good. I turned it off shortly once the post-game show became a ‘team Glazer’ special. I agree that they are over-doing the bro-jokes. And the amount of time before they upload the replays is really revolting.

  74. JP

    November 3, 2021 at 6:40 pm

@greg, yeah I get that. It was more about how the commentary bordered on homerism (or fell slap dab in the middle some cases) for Man U. Of course it would dominate the discussion with the dramatic finish, but it legit seemed like what you’d find postgame on an RSN for your local baseball team.

Was barely paying attention to today’s post match show, but the laughing and yukking it up is also off putting. Reminded of why I usually ignore pre/post game coverage for all sports!

  75. greg

    November 3, 2021 at 3:31 pm

FWIW, on the pre-game right now (40 minutes before main kick-off) they’ve just done a long-ish segment on Leipzig, and now digging deep into Dortmund.

  76. greg

    November 3, 2021 at 12:29 pm

@JP If there’s one criticism that seems common to pre/post-game shows on tv and podcasts like 2 Robbies or Football Weekly it’s that they focus too much on the big clubs. Couple that with things like that survey of most-followed clubs and it stands to reason that the top clubs will get the most attention on-air. Not saying it’s right, but just seems the dynamic of sports media, especially in sports where the economic disparities are so vast – see also college football, major league baseball (to a lesser extent, but still). The NFL seems the least vulnerable because the draft & salary cap mean that teams beyond the big-market cities can win.

Would it be better to have more attention on Malmö or other minnows? Yes. But to get that attention they have to beat the goliaths – see Young Boys or Sherriff.

  77. JP

    November 3, 2021 at 11:49 am

Yesterday’s post match show basically felt like a local broadcast for Manchester United. So much time given to discussing them, with many of the pundits (used loosely for Kate Abdo’s father) even using “we” when referring to United.

This on top of the post match of Salernitana/Napoli on Sunday having an extensive discussion of Juventus’ issues and possible fortunes for the rest of the campaign.

Is Paramount+ now shifting to discussing the clubs they think bring in the most ratings and giving everyone else the short shift?

  78. Leo

    October 28, 2021 at 10:54 pm

It seems Prende TV will stream these games:
    11/2: Dynamo Kyiv – Barcelona
    11/3: Liverpool – Atletico Madrid
    11/23: Chelsea – Juventus
11/24: Sheriff Tiraspol – Real Madrid

@SteveK and @JP. Yep, same for me. Screen went black with a working wheel to reconnect.

On a side note: Still not at all impressed with Paramount+ video quality of the Champions League matches. Disappointing to say the least. It lacks the crispness of focus that you get with ESPN+ and Peacock with their respective aired matches. It’s no comparison.

I do know that others have complained about Peacock’s speed rate of video (i.e. it’s 60 bps like ESPN) but at least the picture is crisp and clear. Not so with Paramount+. And they are still behind the mentioned providers with no pause or rewind for live matches.

Fully on board with Club Brugge. Still know it’s a long shot to advance, need to take points from City coming up next 2 matches. But Europa League looking very possible now.

With no team to really root for (pulling for Atalanta most out of the Serie A clubs), adopting Brugge. Once again they did not look scared and obviously the better team most of the match.

  97. greg

    September 15, 2021 at 6:06 pm

As some on Twitter have pointed out, the set-up of PSG doesn’t match Poch’s coaching style – he needs his forwards to press a bit, and none of the stars want to do that work. They might get a bit more defensively solid when (if) Ramos is healthy and they then manage his minutes in Ligue 1. So unless they learn how to break down a team set up like Brugge today, they’ll have more matches like this.

  98. Ra

    September 15, 2021 at 5:25 pm

@JP Agreed. But it is still ridiculous for PSG, considering that you could pay the salary of the whole Brugge team with what any of PSG’s superstars get.

@Ra, one of the joys of following some smaller leagues is knowing players before they break out into the mainstream. De Ketelaere for one, been a joy every week. Was rooting hard for Club Brugge. This really hurts PSG’s chances to advance. With City and Leipzig in the group need to back 6 pts against Brugge!

  101. Ra

    September 15, 2021 at 5:07 pm

On a more serious note – I installed the Talksport (UK) and Sportschau (DE-german) apps. Both were very useful for conveniently listening to the games on the go.

It is 7:45pm Eastern and Paramount Plus STILL does not have any Champions League game that kicked off at 3pm available on replay yet,,???. They do have the two 12:45,pm games. I just called PPlus and was told it could take “up to 24 hours” for games to be available. Is this how it has been with Paramount?. Guess I’ve not tried to watch a replay before but if this is standard for them then I cannot wait for ESPN to get CL.

For a soccer fan, CBS Sports HQ is really subpar. Every time I tune in I see either NFL or MLB. I stopped bothering myself at some point. What pundits do they have on soccer, or do they just share the news?

  109. Ra

    September 10, 2021 at 2:18 pm

Having bought so many soccer properties, it amazes me that Paramount has no dedicated soccer news show like ESPN FC. They should do a daily show covering their properties, similar to how ESPN does with FC, with a host and several pundits.

    • Christopher Harris

      September 10, 2021 at 2:22 pm

CBS Sports HQ is effectively their version of the soccer news show concept. They have segments almost daily about soccer. I’m not sure if it’s the same time every day, but they certainly cover the sport.

CBS Sports HQ is available via the ‘Live TV’ tab under Paramount+

  114. Ra

    August 27, 2021 at 10:04 am

I was just watching the F1 training session on F1TV. To me, this is the gold standard of sports streaming. I just counted – they offer:
    24 different cameras.
7 audio feeds (EN, DE, FR, ES, NL, PT, natural track audio)
Companion app with advanced statistics and info.
They haven’t launched an AppleTV/AndroidTV app yet, but some guy created an app for it (F1 Player), that is superior to all other sports streaming apps out there (ESPN, Paramount, Peacock, all others).
It is amazing the things you can do if you are willing to do it.

The UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League need to offer a SAP option for all language such as Italian, Spanish, German, French, etc. I’ve been hearing some Rumors that the Serie A is going to have an Italian Option for matches so why not make that an option for all the matches for all the different leagues.

My cable provider of the guide said they are going to 3 games on tv?

  126. JP

    December 9, 2020 at 1:01 pm

    @Eddie
I don’t understand why they always show the same matches on both Unimas and TUDN. But in this case doesn’t really matter since the Liverpool already clinched top of the group and Midtjylland 4th. Match is meaningless, they made the right decision in the one’s being shown.

  127. Eddie

    December 9, 2020 at 12:38 pm

Midtjylland vs. Liverpool there didn’t air the game on tv due to Psg vs Istanbul basaksehir game.

why there couldn’t decide to put 3 games on tv for example
    PSG vs Istanbul basaksehir. TUDN
    Liverpool vs Midtjylland UNIMAS
    Ajax vs Atalanta Galavision

Why Univision couldn’t make a better decision on tv for viewers?

  129. Eddie

    October 15, 2020 at 10:35 am

I cannot believe that TUDN is putting both channels of simulcasting. I don’t know why do they that every time. I prefer the matches at 3 pm putting 3 games on tv instead of 2 games. Which they shouldn’t think putting since the UEFA Europa League is one game on tv and other on the tv of 3 games.
3 pm kickoff they should one game on TUDN, other Unimas, and other Galavsion.

I prefer that or they wouldn’t air because of ratings and cable problems.

    Unimas and TUDN, Galavision
Zenit St Petersburg vs. Brugge (Champions League Group Stage), 12:55 pm,Galavison
Dynamo Kyiv vs. Juventus (Champions League Group Stage), 12:55 pm, TUDN/ Unimas

The other 3 games on tv TUDN, Unimas, and Galavision
Chelsea vs. Sevilla (Champions League Group Stage), 3 pm or Lazio vs. Dortmund (Champions League Group Stage)TUDN
Barcelona vs. Ferencvaros (Champions League Group Stage), 3 pm Unimas
PSG vs. Man United (Champions League Group Stage), 3 pm Galavsion

Sadly my team, Real Madrid, lost today so I don’t have to subscribe to CBS All Access after all.
Real played very poorly today to have any chance to eliminate Manchester City.
Real’s Raphaël Varane had an awful game, maybe the worst of his life, to give up two precious goals to help MC send Real to the showers for the rest of this season.
The only consolation for Real fans is that at least we won the La Liga championship this season.
Now we have to wait till the next season starts.
It has been a very sad day for all Real Madrid fans.

    • John USA

      August 9, 2020 at 2:05 pm

Real Madrid lost and got eliminated because of their French Connection.
First Raphaël Varane had an abominably very poor game and secondly Zenedine Zidane managed probably his worst game of his coaching career.
He picked wrong players for this very important game and did not replace players till the game was almost over.. so all the subs did not have enough time to contribute.
Even though Zidane is highly regarded as a brilliant coach his stupid stubbornness is also his downfall.
Real Madrid is not that strong offensively and seldom score a lot of goals as they did when they had CR7, so Zidane started relying on his defense to win games, and almost always by just one goal difference, so they needed to shutdown MC which unfortunately Raphaël Varane messed up this whole plan. Another major and catastrophic Real failure is Zidane’s very poor decision not to play Gareth Bale and James Rodríguez, both are healthy and are superb offensive players and their scoring abilities were very sorely missed in this game.
I will not be sad if and when Zidane departs Real Madrid. His personal stubborn and poor decisions have hurt this team enormously, Had he planned smarter and more logically Real would have had a much better chance to win and advance to the quarter-finals.
Zidane’s mistakes were lethal and catastrophic.

Someone above said… “We also cannot watch any games in English without paying, I hate listening to Univision as they only broadcast in Spanish, which is a pain to my ears.”

Well for those of us who are polyglots, who DO speak Spanish (as well as 3 other languages in my case) and who appreciate the excitement of the match announcers as opposed to boring British announcers “oh, well now, that’s a goal, now about that Carlsberg beer…” it’s not a problem…

    Chris:
The CBS All Access pages, as viewed through AppleTV+, are extremely confusing. The upcoming CL games for this coming weekend are displayed, but it’s not clear if all the matches have English commentary, e.g. The Bayern/Chelsea game next Saturday shows as being from Galavision. Will this particular game only be in Spanish on CBS All Access?

    • Christopher Harris

I haven’t used the CBS All Access app on Apple TV. But every single game will be streamed in English via CBS All Access.

      Spanish-language broadcasts are on Univision/tUDN/Galavision.

I signed up for CBSAllAccess but it’s very confusing:
        1. None of the games listed as available only on CBSAllAccess is showing up on the schedule. Hopefully this one will be fixed in time. Friday and Saturday games do show up on CBS Sports schedule.
        2. A very frustrating situation happens if you cannot watch a game LIVE on CBSAllAccess e.g., because of a personal conflict or because you’re watching another game at the same time (there are 2 simultaneous games both on Friday and on Saturday). There is no DVR offered. Unlike ESPN+ (also without a DVR but the games are available on demand IMMEDIATELY after the game is over) CBSAllAccess offers shows ON DEMAND only on the following day.

        • nosferatu

          August 4, 2020 at 2:01 am

I have noticed that ESPN+ does have a DVR function now–at least it did for the FA Cup final and for the Championship playoff games last week. A great relief to have that in place. I’m still desperately waiting for this from NBC (and now I guess CBS). It’s kind of stunning at this point in time for a service to not have it.

My question is will I able to watch the Champions League through my Prime account or will I have to pay for a separate subscription? If anyone can answer this question it is greatly appreciated. Thanks Chris

Hi Chris, if you’re paying for CBS All Access through Amazon Prime, then yes you’ll be able to watch the Champions League games.

      • John USA

        July 29, 2020 at 2:45 pm

If you pay….that is the key.
Amazon Prime does make CBS All Access available …. BUT … it is NOT FREE…..the user must purchase CBS All Access to be able to watch this channel.
So ….. if you have NOT purchased CBS All Access you CANNOT watch it.

        • Christopher Harris

          July 29, 2020 at 3:40 pm

            You are right Christopher.
Amazon Prime does make available many shows and channels to Prime members, the sad fact is that many of these available offers are NOT free, the customer is forced to buy their selected packages at extra cost besides paying for Prime membership.
I made this fact very clear in my earlier post which was deleted from here, I assume because I was unkind to Jeff Bezos.

    July 27, 2020 at 7:55 pm

Chris do you think CBS is really only going to show the final on all access? That seems horribly inconsistent with their prior claims. (more CL matches on NETWORK TV than any prior provider). Or just haven’t updated anything but the first set of games and you just filled in all access as you know all access will carry all matches?

    • Christopher Harris

      July 27, 2020 at 8:16 pm

The “more CL games on network TV than any prior provider” is a interesting turn of phrase though. When Turner had the rights, none of the games were on over-the-air television. When FOX Sports had the rights, usually the final would be on the over-the-air FOX channel. So if CBS puts two games on over-the-air TV, the “more CL games on network TV than any prior provider” will be valid.

Hopefully they’ll show more than that. But, for the most part, the acquisition of the Champions League rights are a play to get people to subscribe to CBS All Access.

      • Azer

        July 27, 2020 at 9:48 pm

Chris – Please correct me if I’m wrong but Turner does not have any over the air channels. All of Turner’s networks/property is on cable, even TBS. They do have the CW network but that is a joint venture between CBS & Turner.

The CBS Sports Network schedule is at this URL:
    https://www.cbssportsnetwork.com/tv-schedule/
This network is available on my Comcast TV package and depending on your Comcast TV package it could be available for free, as it is for me.
The CBS Total Access, is here on the web:
    https://www.cbs.com/all-access
It is not free and you must subscribe to this service at $5.99 a month, they do offer a 7-day free trial
The CBS Total Access app is not yet available on Comcast, although it should be available soon according to Comcast, I do see this app on my TV’s apps but it says that it is coming soon.
The advantage is you can watch this channel on your TV with this new coming app and without needing to stream it through your WiFi or Internet.

Manchester City vs. Real Madrid (Champions League Round of 16, second leg), 3pm, CBS Sports Network, UniMas, Hulu + Live TV, AT&T TV, CBS All Access and fuboTV (free trial)
I got excited when I read that this game is going to be televised by CBS Sports Network (as it says here) as I do have this channel on my Comcast cable TV package.
Unfortunately and sadly when I just checked CBS Sports Network programming schedule for August 7th they do not list this match at all, but list the “Tiki + Tierney Show” for the 3 PM ET start time.

Hi John, we’re the best source for accurate TV listings, but they do sometimes change day-by-day based on what the TV companies decide. But we’re the best place to go to first.

The programming guides on cable systems and even the TV company’s websites are not always updated in a timely manner.

For that specific match, it was CBS that told me the game would be on CBS Sports Network. Of course, they can always change their mind. But I’m confident that is still correct. We’ll find out for sure next week when they officially announce their TV schedule.

I am not happy as I think both TNT and UEFA are equally guilty in not arranging English TV coverage for US fans. TNT should have at least covered till the end of this season….or….. for UEFA to give the remaining games coverage to CBS or another US network, like ESPN or Fox.
Their abysmal disregard to all US soccer fans is unpardonable.

    • Bobby Drake

      July 22, 2020 at 2:21 pm

Agree with everything above. If a super elite rich person hates soccer so much they want to destroy the game in USA, then the contract to TNT and not showing the games is how you do that. Amazing TNT really had no idea what they were getting into with this. UEFA just took the money and ran, and I’m sure there is even more money with breach of contract. Any clue who has taken the remainder of this years CL? CBS is next year but not Aug 2020 games.

      • John USA

        July 23, 2020 at 11:34 am

Hi Bobby, the way I understand is that there will not be any free English telecast in the US for the remaining CL matches starting on August 7th between Real Madrid and Manchester City and ending with the final match on August 23rd.
Remember that all matches starting with the quarter-finals are all going to be held in Lisbon and are single elimination matches, no more home and away matches, so these games should be very exciting.
The only way to get these matches in English in the US will be available on CBS All Access and you have to pay for it, it is $5.99 a month for this streaming service. They offer a 7-day free trial. Maybe it is worth buying this just for a month. I recommend to connect your laptop to your TV to watch these matches on a big screen or if you have the CBS app on your TV or Roku you are set.
You can watch these matches for free on Univision if you have this channel available, but it is only in Spanish.
The only free way to watch these games in English is to find a free online streaming site, Google should come in handy in finding them.
Again, UEFA fumbled these arrangements very badly.
If we are lucky…..maybe a last second arrangement with a US TV network will be licensed and to be telecast in English …. but I am not holding my breath.

    July 21, 2020 at 1:29 pm

TNT network should have never gotten the Champions League TV contract as they are not a good sports covering network and do not have good qualified people to manage it.
UEFA is stupidly at fault with dealing with TNT and they should have selected a much better TV network for the US coverage, like Fox, who has dedicated sports channels to please all soccer fans in the USA, like FS1 and FS2 and their main Fox channel to broadcast the final to a very large and nationwide TV market, also for free without greedy subscription demands
Now all US soccer fans are being deprived in watching these upcoming playoff matches due to stupidity of greedy UEFA.
We also cannot watch any games in English without paying, I hate listening to Univision as they only broadcast in Spanish, which is a pain to my ears.
    A big shame on UEFA.
A big shame on TNT. They should have never attempted in winning this contract a they are simply incapable in handling it and doing a good job.
In the end we US soccer fans are suffering from UEFA’s horrible stupidity.

No, I am not happy as CBS will start their coverage next year in 2021.
This year’s coverage and the playoffs in Portugal will not be covered by any English TV network. It is also disheartening on why TNT stopped covering this year, they should have at least broadcasted all the games starting August 7th between Real Madrid at Manchester City, and continue coverage till the final in Lisbon on August 23.
        A big shame on TNT.

My anger and disappointment is at TNT for just cancelling their coverage before this season was completed. They should have at least completed this whole season. I will not miss their poor coverage anyway.
I am also very angry and disappointed at stupid and greedy UEFA for not acting in a proper way to service English speaking soccer fans in the US. Their poor decisions are most unbecoming and very poor business (I am trying to be polite here). A big shame on UEFA.

Well that is shocking! Would make sense for CBS to start their coverage early, but given they basically brand new in covering this type of event, would also make sense for UCL to give it to someone more established in soccer for the resumption of the tournament and give CBS lead time for next year (make it a 4 year deal instead of 3?).

ESPN makes sense, as does Fox. As a beIN fan would also be funny if they got it and everyone complains about not getting that channel….could put pressure on Comcast and Direct TV.

      *TUDNxtra*

      – Viewers from participating cable providers, with the flagship TUDN network can access and watch additional LIVE games with TUDNxtra. With the TUDNxtra channels, TUDN is delivering every single game of UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and the UEFA European Qualifiers, as well as Liga MX and Copa MX in both Spanish and English.

    • Ritchie

      September 16, 2019 at 5:01 pm

It also looks like TUDN will have a whip-around show (like Fox used to have). My Spanish isn’t very good (I’m working on that) but I should be able to enjoy their version regardless.

To be honest, I consumed most of my UCL last year via the univision networks anyway.

    • Monte Reed

      September 16, 2019 at 9:23 pm

FUBOtv now has 11 TUDNxtra channels and ZONAFUTBOL TUDN channel. I have fubo basic with “sports plus”. All the Champions League and Europe League matches are listed in fubo’s listings.

It appears that the Univision games not televised on a linear channel will this year require a subscriber login. Last year, the non-televised games were available without any authentication.

    Chris,

Can you watch champions league replays, via the univision now supscribtion service?

    • Christopher Harris

      March 10, 2019 at 8:06 pm

Subscribers can instantly watch programs from the past 3 days (72 hours) of the live stream using the program guide, and can watch hundreds of primetime and library shows on demand. Not all Univision and UniMás programming is available through the Univision NOW service.

      • David the Yank

        April 11, 2019 at 9:49 am

        Hi. “Using the program guide”?
I have signed in to univision now and searching for UEFA, Juventus, Ajax, Barcelona all come back with nothing. The main screen has a “What’s on Now” and a “Catch up on [Univision][[Unimas]” etc. but there is no sign of sports/deportes. Has anyone (including CH) actually successfully watched a match within 72 hours? Please let me know how to find as I’d like to see some of the Ajax match that I couldn’t watch live yesterday and don’t have B/R.

        • Christopher Harris

          April 11, 2019 at 11:29 am

Univision Now only features programming from UniMas and Univision, which are both free-to-air. Univision Deportes Network is a cable/satellite network and is completely different. Same with Galavision, which is owned by Univision Deportes.

Ajax-Juve was on Galavision. If you don’t have Galavision on your cable or satellite, you can watch it through fuboTV.

          • locofooty

            April 11, 2019 at 1:56 pm

You can authenticate your subscription and get Univision Deportes on the app tho, right? I think it’s Galavision that for some reason doesn’t recognize authentication.

            • Christopher Harris

              April 11, 2019 at 2:41 pm

Correct. But you should be able to authenticate to watch Galavision through the Univision Deportes Network website at https://www.univision.com/deportes

I have 1 of 2 Univision channels. I also have Galavision and Univision Deportes Network. UniMas and the other Univision is not free to air on my cable, it’s in the Spanish package which is strange, the others ( Galavision & UDN) are not. I went to the UDN/Univision sign in page and COMCAST/Xfinity is not available. There are 15 providers and Comcast is not one of them. Do you know why? Thanks.

        • Christopher Harris

          September 19, 2018 at 7:11 am

The one that has access to the most of the games is fuboTV:

EPL – All games except the ones on NBC Sports Gold
UCL – All the games on TNT, Univision, Univision Deportes Network, UniMas and Galavision as well as all of the games not on TV via authenticating with the Univision Deportes app
UEL: Same as above (note that only the final is on TNT)

  168. David

    August 16, 2018 at 8:54 pm

Quick poll on which one is dumber:
    1. UCL feeds on Fox Match Pass (and some ESPN3 games) last year that didn’t display score or game clock. You don’t know the score or time left unless someone scores.
    2. B/R Live menu that forces you to see the score of the match before you watch it.
It just seems the whole user experience was designed at these companies by someone who never watched a single UCL game as a fan living in the US.

I subscribe to Sling Orange and was getting Bein and UDN for $5 per month by adding on the Spanish package. That was really a sweet deal. It seems Sling (and Dish) will now lose UDN for sure. What are the options to get UDN without cable? I need the games on demand to watch in the evening. Thank you.

          iPhone
          iPad
          Apple TV (4th & 5th Generations)

Champions in the states now = retarded … won’t even have reruns at nights like FS1 and fs2 use to have for most of us that work for a living … and now we neede to learn to speak Spanish more than ever …. looks like English language is begging replaced with Spanish which is fine because more action when a goal is scored on Spanish speaking channel ( (gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool !!!!!!!!!!!) Instead of just goal!!!!

  172. Andy

This is retarded and an epic fail. Nobody is going to pay $79.99 to watch the champion live on stream and hope the connection is good to go on a smart phone or a 13inch iPad Pro when Costco is selling on average 65 inch tvs… you can’t garentee to call friends over to watch together if the bleacher report app won’t connect with the smart tv. Freaking technology should make things easier not harder … epic fail by TNT b/r live and champions league in the states .. forced to learn Spanish now

I download the app, there are some matches on B/R with free icon on top of video. I tried to click it . It tooks me to option ( Way to catch ) . We need to have tv provider in order to watch these games. Some people don’t have tv provider including me, So I don’t know why it’s say free video. Looks we will lose privilage to watch UCL especially the qualifications starting next month. Hopefully will have an idea about there plan within couple of weeks.
    Thanks

    • Tony G

      July 7, 2018 at 4:09 pm

Well, I did sign up and I get both the ‘free’ video icon and at the same time it says “We’re Sorry. No options appear to be available based on your zip code and tv provider.” But if I go to my local team’s (Rapids) B/R Live page, it provides accurate information (including bars where I can go see it, which is cool).

At any rate, they don’t seem to offer on demand yet, so matches played during working hours are useless to me.

    July 6, 2018 at 9:35 pm

So B/R Live currently says that Alashkert vs. Celtic is not available in my zip code and for my TV provider (with no options for streaming services like Sling or does it say anything about it being shown on B/R Live, except ). But helpfully they also say the service is free through June (It is July 6th). I suppose there is a reason why they are still in beta. Hope they get serious when the qualifying rounds come along.

    • Christopher Harris

Hopefully yes, but no decision has been made yet regarding who will acquire the English-language rights.

    • Oliver Tse

      January 12, 2018 at 5:04 am

Expect CONCACAF Champions League matches with English-language commentary to be made available on YouTube, with “World Feed” commentary by a single announcer calling the matches from a sound booth at Vista Worldlink in Dania Beach, Florida.

The voice of USL Match of the Week (2nd division U.S. club soccer) on ESPNU and ESPN3.com, Mike Watts, should be on the call for many CONCACAF Champions League matches as most USL telecasts on ESPN3.com originate from the same sound booth at Vista Worldlink.

Spanish-language coverage of CONCACAF Champions League will be on Univision Deportes Network, with some overflow matches on Galavision if necessary. Authenticated (password-protected for pay TV subscriber of Univision Deportes Network) access via streaming should be available on UnivisionDeportes.com and the Univision Deportes App.
