DAZN acquires Asian Cup rights in US

Soccer fans in the United States wanting to watch the 2019 AFC Asian Cup can now watch the remainder of the tournament for free via the legal streaming service DAZN.

DAZN has acquired the U.S. rights to the competition for the quarterfinals to the final, which kick off on Thursday and Friday featuring Vietnam-Japan, China-Iran, South Korea-Qatar and UAE-Australia, which you can also stream to your TV.

You can start your subscription to DAZN, which also includes access to boxing (from Bellator to Matchroom Boxing to World Boxing Super Series to Combate Americas) as well as J-League, Liga Chilena and AFC Champions League.

Pronounced “Da Zone,” the new streaming service hired former ESPN President John Skipper last May. In the past few months, DAZN has been actively entering discussions to try to acquire more soccer rights, according to World Soccer Talk sources.

The addition of the Asian Cup rights could be the beginning of more rights deals being announced in the near future.

In addition to the U.S. rights to the Asian Cup, Canadian soccer fans can also start a subscription to DAZN Canada to watch the Asian Cup.

Here’s the 2019 Asian Cup streaming schedule (all kickoff times listed are in the Eastern United States timezone):

Hi Christopher. Do you know if U.S. viewers can watch Serie B matches on DAZN?

When it comes to soccer rights in the USA, DAZN only has the J-League from Japan. That’s it. DAZN Italia has Serie B rights but you have to live in Italy to access those.

Thanks. So no Serie B options at all in the U.S. I assume?

Dazn might get Bundesliga for next few years or fox sports might renew the rights

DAZN can’t get the Bundesliga rights until 2020 earliest as the Fox deal was for 5 seasons. We’re only in season 4 of that deal.

I’m more worried about who is going to get La Liga. I wouldn’t mind ESPN getting it cuz I have the channels and ESPN+, but then beIN would be basically dead which I won’t have once I cancel the TV part of cable since I use PSVue.

With DAZN being a stand alone streaming option not backed by a major media company as ESPN+ and even B/R Live are, do you think they’re vulnerable to being bought out by such a company if they start to disrupt the status quo too much…..and their portfolio of properties folded into that empire?

DAZN is financed by billionaire Len Blavatnik, who has a net worth of $16 billion.

Impressive, perhaps the question should be reversed then…..will DAZN buy out the properties of the likes of an ESPN+or B/R Live if it becomes successful…

One World Sports had last Asian Cup, they’ve since been bought by Eleven Sports who show virtually no soccer.

There is an article in this week’s Bloomberg Businessweek about the fella who started DAZN. Interesting stuff…looks like the company could be a major player in acquiring tv football rights in the US and elsewhere…
