Which streaming playing device is the best to watch soccer?

streaming playing device soccer

For soccer fans, a streaming playing device is something such as Roku, Amazon Fire TV stick, Apple TV or something similar. In each of these cases, these are practically smart TVs that can hook up to anything with an HDMI port.

What makes these devices special is the fact that they allow access to the wide variety of streaming services. In the United States, soccer fans require subscriptions to four different providers just to watch the top five leagues in Europe. After that, other leagues in Europe are spread out. However, more often than not, the best streaming playing devices still carry those platforms.

It makes it easy for soccer fans to watch multiple leagues. In fact, many Americans opt for these streaming playing devices because of how easy it is to switch between something like Paramount+ and ESPN+. All it takes is a handful of clicks with the remote, and paid-subscriptions to the services, to watch all your favorite soccer leagues.

The best streaming playing device for soccer

Of course, the best way to have input into which one of these is the best is to use them all. In the effort to save some money, few people have that experience. However, these are fairly frequent items.

Speaking anecdotally, I use an Apple TV in the living room on a Roku TV. Therefore, if I use the smart TV portion of the Roku, I have access to the streaming playing aspect of that device. At the same time, one simple input change allows me to use the Apple TV. Therefore, I can speak for those two.

Personally, I find the Apple TV to be better. Yet, much of that stems from the fact that it is controllable via my phone. Passwords, changes in application, familiarity and more are reasons why the Apple TV suits my uses for watching soccer.

Even then, there are perfectly good reasons why the Roku, Amazon Fire TV stick or Chromecast may be your favorite to use.

Knowing that, we want to know your opinion. Much of that is influenced by your use of one of these. However, if you have experience, be sure to tell why you like, or dislike, using a certain streaming playing device like the ones listed above.

The answer to this question is an easy one….a Lap Top Computer attached to a TV via HDMI cable. Always easiest to have a mouse to point and click over a remote. Got to have a good computer though. Small Chromebook won’t cut it.

AppleTV hands down due to multicast on ESPN+ and the smoothness in apps and stream quality. I have a Mecool AndroidTV for the easiness of VPN and being able to download apps out of region.

Multicast on the AppleTV is the difference maker, when one of the others offer multcast at a cheaper price point thing might change. GoogleTV (AndroidTV) has the option of VPN which is nice. Roku is not Apple, not Google and is not Amazon so Roku is the one I’m cheering for but without multicast, AppleTV is the best.

Just FYI you should be able to do both on Apple TV as well. For out of region apps just set up a second apple account in whatever region you want, and then login to that account on the ATV and download the app. It will stay on the ATV for every user, so you can log back into your primary account and it should still work fine. For VPN, all the major ones should have a media streamer function, so you just update the DNS on the ATV and it should bypass any region restrictions. I have ITV, BBC, CBC etc apps all on my ATV, and they all just work with the VPN mediastreamer so I never have to fiddle with settings or turn it on and off. ATV also has a match framerate setting which now works quite well and eliminates any stutter from 25/50fps foreign streams. ATV really does it all.

I like roku the best. I have apple tv and I hate the remote. Doesn’t feel good in your hand especially if you have hands on the bigger side. I also have an Amazon fire and it’s not great.
I prefer the roku ultra that sells for around $89.

Just to add another remote data point, I have large hands and love the new Apple TV remote, so much so it is worth buying separately, but I do agree the circa 2017 remote was not good on any level. If Apple built AirTag functionality into the next remote we will be all set.

I have the one with the sort of mouse pad on it. Got it in 2020. Not sure if they’ve changed it since then. It’s very sensitive. And you have to charge it which is annoying. No need for it to be that small.
Appletv overall is very good as is appletv+ as a value proposition.

You have the older 2017 remote Buckles. The newer 2021 remote is second from the left in the graphic above–it’s thicker, heavier, gains power and mute buttons and has an iPod-like click wheel and touchpad. It is much less sensitive to accidental swipes. It’s a pleasure to hold and use, but I still use my iPad a lot as the aTV remote if I happen to be on it.

I got the newer one and I dislike the remote too.

Is that new remote also a rechargeable one or does it have a battery? I agree the newer remote looks better. I will have to buy one.

Somehow the only person in the world to love the old Apple TV remote. Charging on the same charger as the phone is great and I have to do it *maybe* once a month? The only thing it’s missing for me is “Find My…” capabilities.

But Apple (Hulu, ESPN+, Peacock) is great. I genuinely am taken aback some Saturdays at how much we have now compared to when I first came to the US (2002).

Apple TV is obviously the best, the question is value. I just got a new Apple TV for $120 on prime day – every TV in the house has one. It’s by far the best, ever major app (haven’t tried FUBO) works as well or better than on other platforms. If you are cheeky it also permits IPTV unlike Roku. Integrates well with everything and honestly the Apple TV app is ideal for sports – it tells you every game available to stream for basically every sport, easily organized under the Apple TV sports tab.

Price is a consideration for anyone dipping a toe in the water. The basic Roku 4k is often on sale for $20 at WalMart while Apple TV 4k is closer to $200. The $200 device is higher quality and has more features than the $20 device. But for a number of use cases, the $20 device easily clears the “good enough” threshold. This is likely one of the drivers of Roku being #1 in US market share

Inexpensive, reliable, ease of use, and (in my case) familiarity make the roku my device of choice.
