Edinson Cavani move helps Uruguay at World Cup

Edinson Cavani move helps Uruguay

Earlier this week, LaLiga club Valencia picked up legendary Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani on a two-year deal. The 35-year-old striker has been a free agent since his two-year stint with Manchester United ended in the Premier League. El Matador struck 12 goals in 41 appearances for The Red Devils.

The highlight of Cavani’s career came during his tenure with Paris Saint-Germain, where he earned 200+ appearances and slotted 138 goals for the French Ligue 1 squad. Before PSG, Cavani solidified his status as Neapolitan alumni, playing two seasons in the Serie A, scoring 59 goals for Gli Azzurri.

How Edinson Cavani transfer to Valencia helps Uruguay

Edinson Cavani’s free transfer to Valencia is integral since the forward will embark on national duty for Uruguay in November. La Celeste is set to face Portugal, South Korea, and Ghana in Group H during Qatar’s 2022 FIFA World Cup

Cavani will have ten opportunities to play before LaLiga breaks for the World Cup. The matchdays create an arena for the veteran striker to get ample playing time. Cavani is in preparation for his final chance to don the sky blue jersey for Uruguay. La Celeste placed as quarterfinalists in Russia 2018.

Valencia’s head coach, former Italian midfielder Gennaro Gattuso, looks to leave his mark on the top-flight Spanish league and rise into the top four. In the 2021/22 season, Valencia finished in the top ten, at ninth: eleven wins, 12 losses, and a whopping 15 draws. In addition, Valencia was tied for second in most games ending in a draw last season. However, with the addition to the goal-scoring prowess of Edinson Cavani, the former Napoli head coach and his Uruguayan counterpart look to make a name for themselves in LaLiga by turning draws into wins.

Valencia’s upcoming schedule

Valencia host Getafe on matchday four, Sunday, September 4. Los Che’s biggest match before the World Cup will occur on October 30, when Valencia plays against Barcelona at home in Mestalla Stadium.
