Coming in 2022, the Africa Cup of Nations takes place in January over a monthlong period. Originally, the Confederation of African Football scheduled the 2021 AFCON to be in June and July, 2021. However, after officials deemed the weather conditions too hot in Cameroon during that time, the organization rescheduled the competition.

Africa Cup of Nations TV Schedule
Now, despite the tournament retaining the name ‘2021 Africa Cup of Nations’, it takes place in 2022. Traditionally, the tournament is a biennial competition taking place in odd-numbered years. While that is not the case due to outside factors, the tournament still pulls in the best players from the continent to compete for their country.
AFCON Format
Technically speaking, every nation in Africa has a chance to win the Africa Cup of Nations. As we know, each tournament has its favorite. However, of the 24 teams in the final tournament, only the host nation gets a spot in the group stage. Therefore, Cameroon had automatic qualification as the host. Even then, the squad finished top of its group in qualifying. The other 23 teams came from the qualification stage where each team was in a group of four countries. The top-two teams after six games reach the final tournament.

In Cameroon, the tournament follows a similar trajectory to the Euros. There are six groups of four teams. The top-two teams in each group advance to the knockout stages, and the top-four third-place teams also qualify for the knockout stages. From there, it is a single-elimination bracket involving 16 teams.
In the past, Egypt is the most successful team with seven Africa Cup of Nations triumphs. Secondly, this year’s host, Cameroon, has five wins, while Ghana wraps up the podium with four tournament victories.
Even then, the competition is fairly diverse in terms of champions. Granted, Africa has a lot of countries with the ability to compete, but 14 different countries can say they won an Africa Cup of Nations.
Notable names
Last year, Algeria won its second Africa Cup of Nations. That squad, led by 2016 African Player of the Year Riyad Mahrez, is surely one of the favorites to contend in Cameroon.
But, don’t turn your back on Egypt with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Senegal or an always-hungry Nigeria side that finished third in 2019.

Is Univision or ViX going to televise the 2023 AFCON? They now have UEFA, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, the USMNT, USWNT, and the Mexico National Team. They have every national team competition so far except for AFCON

As someone who does not subscribe to Bein Sports, I appreciate that they have shown so much for free on the Xtra channel, including the final. On the other hand, I agree it is weird not to be on the regular channel since the tournament is the top soccer event right now.

beIN is the worst. I hope Fox gets the rights for the next AFCON. So that they have the rights to UEFA, FIFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, US Soccer, and CAF. They can’t get the AFC rights for now because CBS already has the rights.

beIN SPORTS have disrespected this tournament more than any other US broadcaster could. There have been AFCON group stage matches that they haven’t shown on any platform, matches without an English commentator feed, delayed broadcasts, prioritized French Cup matches between small clubs on their main channel, and ads during matches on their Xtra channel. Why did they buy the rights if they clearly don’t care?

Is Fox planning to acquire the rights to the Cup of Nations? I am wondering that considering they have the rights to FIFA tournaments, UEFA National Teams, CONMEBOL tournaments, The Gold Cup, and the USMNT and USWNT. I am guessing Fox wants to focus on national teams, not clubs. Which is why they will probably lose the rights for the MLS to CBS.
