Can we talk about racist tv prices. Why is Latino package half the price of I’m assuming white and black people prices? In Spanish speaking countries is English speaking programming half the price? Fubo need charged with discrimination

In marketing, this is called Willigness to pay. Same reason why airlines charge more for business than leisure routes.

42 years later, Eintracht Frankfurt win the UEFA Cup/Europa League.
62 years later, Eintracht Frankfurt return to the European Cup/Champions League.
25 years later, one Bundesliga club win the UEFA Cup/Europa League (since Schalke in 1997).

5/14/22 on ESPN: Arminia Bielefeld – RB Leipzig
In total there were 5 of 306 games that were on linear TV.
Bundesliga 2021/22 is over and now the DFB-Pokal Final on 5/21 (on ESPN+) between Freiburg and Leipzig will be the closure of the German soccer season.

“Der Klassiker” will be on ABC this 4/23/22. If Bayern win, they will be crowned Deutscher Fußballmeister for 10 consecutive time. ESPN kept his word that four games per season would be on linear TV. For the 2021-22 season, these were:
8/21/21 on ABC: Bayer Leverkusen – Borussia M’gladbach
    10/15/21 on ESPN2: Hoffenheim – Köln
3/5/22 on ESPN2: Bayern München – Bayer Leverkusen
4/23/22 on ABC: Bayern München – Borussia Dortmund

4 games, lol. Gotta love the Greedy Mouse.

Probably 50K or less hardcore fans/expats are watching the Bundesliga on the online pay thingy.

Otherwise, it’s the case of out of sight, out of mind for the Bundesliga.

Bayern winning the title for the 75th time in a row doesn’t help.

I agree with you. Definitely awful approach from Bundesliga to get new fans, having only 1% of its product on TV. But having all games on ESPN+ for $70/year is good for me.

Some rumors that Bundesliga might have play-offs were rapidly dismissed by most of the clubs presidents.. If Bayern win it 10 times, or 20 times consecutively, it is because they are much better than the rest (not because money laundry schemes). It’s not good marketing Bayern absolute supremacy but how proud a fan can feel if his team finishing in 8th place in the league and winning the Meisterschale through play-offs. The victories of Klopp’s Dortmund, Werder Bremen, Stuttgart or Wolfsburg were so satisfying precisely because they manage to defeat a monster team called FC Bayern.

@Chronos, no Bundesliga cancellations. There were comments earlier today about ESPN+ having issues with the streams though. Possible it impacted their ability to have video available for replay.

  9. Chronos

    December 11, 2021 at 6:57 pm

We’re a bunch of matches cancelled today or is ESPN+ only offering replays of Wolfsburg-Stuttgart? After going through the many menus on the stupid app to get to the Bundesliga replays (ESPN really doesn’t want us to watch replays) that is the only one available.

I know I could look up re: cancelled matches but that would reveal the scores if they did play.

This weekend it seems 6 of the 9 Bundesliga games will have Spanish language available too. Something I noticed with the Spanish feed of ESPN+ when they use their own talent (e.g. Union-Hertha) is that the ambient sound is way below the voice loudness of the commentators. No problem when they use the south American Spanish Star+ feed, though (like in the early games Leverkusen-Bochum or Dortmund-Stuttgart). I don’t see that issue with the english feed, either.
About 2.Bundesliga, even one game a week is always welcomed. I’d prefer though they would transmit the game of Saturday afternoon (typically is the best game of 2.Bundesliga weekend), otherwise it’s too early (e.g. earlier Darmstadt-St. Pauli).

@JP I don’t think so. I have a friend who was in Germany and Italy a couple of weeks ago. He was amazed – Italy looked like Germany and Germany like Italy. In Germany everyone was lax, no one was wearing masks in public spaces, even at the match (Berlin’s Olympiastadion), but you had to show proof of 3G. In Italy by contrast, trains were on time, everyone was using masks and there were a lot of controls.
Based on this anecdotal evidence, I believe Italy will keep progressing, or at least maintain current stadiums capacity.

  13. JP

    November 19, 2021 at 11:06 am

@Ra, I think Serie A was moved to 75% capacity. However, that is likely to backslide again if other countries are any indication.

  14. Ra

    November 19, 2021 at 11:02 am

@JP Absolutely agree. A different experience – it made me even watch some EPL matches for a while,,, I hope I don’t need to resort to it again 🙂
BTW, do you know what the covid deal is with Serie A? Do you know when they will lift the restrictions? I am looking for options… 🙂

  15. JP

  20. Ra

    October 22, 2021 at 3:18 pm

Now that I can check the world feed, I realize that ESPN adds very little to the Bundesliga besides being easily available and the app itself, which is fantastic (especially AppleTV with multiview). They only cover it en passant on ESPN FC and hardly give us access to any 2. Bundesliga games. We would do much better if they gave up on 2. Bundesliga rights. Onefootball would be more than happy to stream every game, and even add narration to it.

    September 26, 2021 at 7:55 pm

This weekend ESPN+ showed 6 games of 9 with Spanish option (3 from ESPN+ talent and 3 from Star+ feed) and one 2.Bundesliga game (in English). Also, the Bundesliga Highlights Show was available again on Sunday 15:30 ET. The most important news though is that ESPN+ has solved their login-every-single-time bug.

  23. Ra

    September 19, 2021 at 8:54 pm

@Leo Thanks for sharing. It didn’t even occur to me that the highlights show could be made available so soon. Their highlights show is well produced and is a joy to watch. I will start looking for it on Sundays.
To me, I really enjoy Derek Rae, but I like to have options. I watch most of the games in English, but will eventually change to Spanish depending on the occasion. Having traveled more frequently to Argentina (and had great times enjoying the splendid Porto Madero with a steak and a Malbec) than Mexico, Star+’s narration sounds more clear to me.

  24. Leo

    September 19, 2021 at 8:06 pm

@Ra, That sounds good and makes sense for ESPN to reuse commentary. This week there were 5 of 9 games with Spanish language option with some of them with the STAR+ feed. I guess it had never been as many as five games with Spanish language option. But to be honest I was used to Palomo/Kempes duo almost every Bayern games last season. I enjoyed them much more than the STAR+ feed. Also, the Bundesliga Highlights Show in recent weeks are coming much earlier. This week at 3:30 ET just 10 minutes after the end of the last game of the week Wolfsburg-Frankfurt. And that’s another reason why I love Bundesliga. No games on Mondays and to wrap-up everything on Sunday. As a bonus this week, the 2.Bundesliga North derby between Bremen-Hamburg was streamed on Saturday afternoon. This was a great week for Bundesliga on ESPN+.

  25. Ra

    September 18, 2021 at 9:56 am

@leo I was just watching some of the Bayern game with Spanish commentary, and they are indeed using Star+’s feed. The commentator said so and they showed a Star+ banner in the video as well.

Kudos to ESPN for the Gab and Juls podcast released today. Derek Rae joins them for the first 25 minutes to discuss Bayern, Leipzig, Dortmund, Leverkusen and Bundeliga in general. A high calibre discussion. I hope they bring more of this kind of Bundeliga discussions to ESPN FC.

  27. Leo

    September 10, 2021 at 8:56 pm

ESPN+ will have (apparently) Spanish language option for all games in the Bundesliga this weekend. Usually only ~3 games per weekend used to be in both English/Spanish language if I recall correctly (always Bayern and Dortmund games). I am guessing this development could be due to recent acquisition of Bundesliga in Spanish-speaking market in South America by ESPN/STAR+.

Not that I have anything against Brighton or Watford, especially because of liking Troy Deeney. It’s just that there aren’t going to be very many Bundesliga games on regular TV. There was a half-hour ESPN FC show live on, though, which was good. And it seems that the Bundesliga promo and music actually come from the Bundesliga, not from the rights holders, as the music was the same as when Fox showed the games.

Any ideas on how to stream Bundesliga in German? Bundesliga is the best country competition at the moment, and german commentary would be great.
Any good radios to sync ESPN+’s feed with audio? I tried with SR3, WDR2, SWR1, Bayern 1 and did not have much success.

    • Christopher Harris

If you download our Soccer TV Schedules App and add Borussia Dortmund as one of your favorites, it’ll list the upcoming games that are available on TV and streaming. There are a couple of friendlies coming up with Dortmund featured. It doesn’t look likely that Tuesday’s game will be available though. You may be able to watch the game through the club’s official website or social media channels.

Pete for you that might be a bad thing but for us streamers this has become a great deal. Bundesliga being on ESPN+ is the best thing ever. Not to mention the Champions and Europa League being on CBS All Access. I love that I don’t have to pay a fortune to watch matches. Now if they put them on both cable and streaming that would be fine by me. But the issue I have is the Premiere League makes you buy both a streaming service and a live tv service. My setup right now is Hulu/disney/espn bundle commercial free for 18.99 and CBS All Access the yearly plan for 99 bucks again commercial free. I might add in Fanatiz as a Christmas gift from my kids this year too. But I for one never want to go back to cable/live streaming services ever again.

As for popularity I personally don’t care if I am the only person in the USA that watches just so long as I can watch. We all know NFL and NCAAF is the biggest sports in USA and that’s not changing anytime soon. So just enjoy being the odd person in the room. Hell I’m probably the only person in my town of 1000 that watches Football (soccer) and I am fine with it.

  36. Pete

    December 4, 2020 at 10:45 am

The problem with futball in this country is the greedy bastards at NBCSN and ESPN put most of their games on their subscription services. God forbid IF they do put a game on ESPN it is never promoted so most don’t know what day/time it is on – so effectively you are deprived of watching the Italian, German and English Championship leagues. While NBCSN does show a decent amount of Prem games live they often put the best match ups on Peacock. It as gotten so bad that on Sunday 12/6 NBCSN is not airing ONE prem game at all, instead all 4 games are on Peacock. – And folks wonder why the game has not taken off in the U.S. – they are the cause!!!

dumbest move ever to get rid of live bundesliga matches from any tv channels… i won’t be manipulated into paying extra on top of my tv cable channels subscription, screw it, i’ll get by without the games and will just check the scores on-line…see how far you’ll get with this lame marketing ploy espn… my guess is you’ll be transmitting live games on one of your tv channels again because most folks will refuse to be treated like fools ready to be parted from their money…

    • R.O

      September 27, 2020 at 1:23 pm

I’m not into streaming or online program and much prefer having games on TV too. In the last 10 years, my ability to watch the Bundesliga has been either limited or not at all (Gotv gone, Fox Soccer gone, FS2 not carried by Comcast in my area until 2019). When espn got the rights to the Bundesliga & would be on espn+ I had to think long & hard if I wanted to try steaming (I only have DSL) and if I could squeeze in $5.99 into my monthly budget.

Because I’ve been a Bundesliga fan going back to the late 1960’s & I wanted to be able to watch BVB games, I decided to try espn+ Still not a fan of watching games on a computer (vs big screen TV) but I have my laptop hooked up to a 24 Ultra Sharp monitor so it’s better than viewing off a laptop screen.

So far I’m glad I got espn+ The service works well with my DSL, I can watch all the Bundesliga I want including the weekly highlight show, plus the Eredivisie is available, Serie A and USL too. So for now, $5.99 has been worth it. I know it sucks, the fewer and fewer Int’l league games are available on TV. If espn raises the price in the future, I’ll either have to move to a lower cable pkg to keep espn+ or drop it. For now, I had to make an adjustment so I could watch Bundesliga and BVB. It doesn’t work for everyone for many reasons including if one can afford it.

One day, I hope Bundesliga comes back to TV.

Why did they schedule Dortmund vs Bayern on a Tuesday as an early game? FS1 would have the game if it was at 2:30p ET but 12:30p ET is right in the middle of THE HERD. I will be watching it on FS2 though.

    • Christopher Harris

      May 16, 2020 at 3:08 pm

The early game is more likely to get a larger viewing audience worldwide – including in Asia. While they care about the US market, it isn’t their number one priority.

BTW god forbid they interrupt “The Herd.” No one is watching a show where the bloke has nothing to talk about!

You’re correct. RB Leipzig v. FC Bayern Munchen at 12:30PM on FS2 with Derek Rae and Mark Schwarzer doing commentary.
Union Berlin is hosting Werder Bremen at 9:30AM on FS Plus with my favorite commentator in the world Garry Preston.

Another impressive day in the DFB Cup. VFL Osnabruck promoted to the 2nd division this past season played RB Leipzig. Final score 2-3 The commentator was Chris Sharples.
The second game of the day was SV Wehen Wiesbaden also promoted to the 2nd division played
    1. Fc Koln promoted to the Bundesliga. The game ended 3-3 AET, went to penalties, Final score 5-6
Both games were streaming on ESPN3. The commentator was Darek Rae. He was also a commentator yesterday for Wurzburg vs Hoffenheim as I wrote about it above. I watched all the games from the DFB Cup this weekend. 2 more games on Monday.

With the abominations that are BR, ESPN Plus, and the NBC platforms, we have officially entered the world of almost no football on regular tv.

How is this good in anyone’s universe?

TV in general is moving this way. The best TV shows are not on broadcast TV. The good news is that high-speed Internet + streaming is far cheaper than cable or satellite.. A streaming service I can get directly is better than a cable channel I may or may not have.. True, it does suck for those who don’t have access to high-speed internet.

Let them try and put the NE Patriots or Dallas Cowboys on some paid online platform, let me know how that works out.

Soccer/football is supposedly a niche sport with “hard core” following that is being perceived as a cash cow by the netwroks, ergo, the massive paywall push.

Thankfully, there are solutions to everything. They want to see me as a cash cow, I find other ways to watch the games i want to watch. Let’s see who wins that one…

        • JP

          August 5, 2019 at 10:41 am

Exactly, they may make money in the short term, but at the expense of gaining new fans. These services are only preaching the the choir of people who are already fans. At some point even many of those may stop watching.
Take Europa League for example. If not for Univision I wouldn’t have watched any last year, Wasn’t something I would’ve cared enough to subscribe to B/R to see. Watched much more of it when on Fox.
Became a casual viewer of Bundesliga on Fox, and will likely still be casual on Plus if it moves there, but only if I’m already on the service to watch Serie A and live matches running at some point during that window, won’t seek it out.
Then there’s the whole issue that on streaming you don’t have these on at bars or restaurants. If people want to go to eat during a match have to choose between missing a match or staying home….could see going out winning out in situations when the match isn’t marquee.

ESPN already has the German Cup games to stream, so it definitely makes sense. I’m glad that ESPN will get Bundesliga: If Fox didn’t care to keep it (as it seems to be the case with all the leagues they have let go) then at least it goes somewhere you will have 1080P 60 FPS in perfect video quality and a recognized brand. Similar Serie A concept would work great. Fox never really promoted Bundesliga well enough at all, and though it is unfortunate that you will now have hardly any games on television (based on the reports) at least Bundesliga feels it is worthwhile for them and vice versa. ESPN + is killing it right now.

    • R.O

      August 3, 2019 at 10:17 pm

Many people don’t do streaming or can’t because they may only have DSL (to slow for streaming). At least if ESPN put the Bundesliga games on ESPN Deportes and/or on ESPN3 (DSL works okay for ESPN3) that would be good.
I’m just not a steaming service person. I have cable and not paying extra to watch and get other services.

The writing was always in on the wall. Christopher and Kartik kind of gave us a forewarning about this last year during their podcast that FOX wasn’t going to renew, When the deal with FOX was announced on October 14 2013 paid roughly $110m yr for the rights to Bundesliga.
    http://www.sportspromedia.com/news/bundesliga_to_double_international_rights_fees_with_fox_deal.
FOX got Bundesliga as a answer to EPL on NBC the project failed miserably partly because of FOX but mostly due to the natural lack of an Bundesliga TV audience. You didn’t have to be a rocket.
This was simply a business move akin to a company laying off or closing a non-performing division.

According to SB Nation, this upcoming season (2019-20) will be the last FOX’s Bundesliga season as ESPN bought the rights from FOX for the 2020-21 season. The Bundesliga on ESPN deal helps improve the viewership of the league. In the 2020-21 season, the vast majority of matches will be on ESPN+, but the possibilities of some matches will be on linear ESPN networks. So goodbye Bundesliga on FOX. The 2019-20 season will be the last for FOX to broadcast the Bundesliga.

Wow, If this is confirmed by ESPN, what a shocker. From GOLTV which sublicensed some games to ESPN3 to Fox Sports to ESPN+ ? It’s quite a journey for the Bundesliga. The league does not belong behind a paywall. BTW, The New York Post is also reporting this news. If true, I have so many questions, I don’t know where to begin.

    • R.O

      August 3, 2019 at 10:12 pm

“The Bundesliga on ESPN deal helps improve the viewership of the league.” No, not really. Unless you have streaming (espn+) which requires High Speed Internet & DSL is not fast enough to be able to watch espn+, many people won’t get to watch Bundesliga. Non millenniums still like to watch sports on TV and have cable or SAT.

Regarding that espn might show some matches on their linear networks (TV), hoping it’s not like what they do for Serie A games – only showing the 3 am West Coast Time games, Plus when espn does show Serie A games on TV, it’s usually lower table team/games. While I have my issues with Fox on the poor job they do with Bundesliga, at least it’s available via TV (non streaming). I’m hoping espn puts quite a few games on espn Deportes. That would be okay.

    July 11, 2019 at 4:25 pm

Just a thought: Wouldn’t on the eve of the season starting would Fox and/or Bundesliga put a statement out stating whether the current deal would be extended or whether they would part ways? There is a month remaining, is it too early? It seems Fox is just finishing up all their soccer contracts that aren’t US Soccer (UEFA, etc) and focusing on other possibilities. Nothing wrong with that, just wondering usually how soon do companies announce anything on the last year of a tv deal?

    • Christopher Harris

      July 11, 2019 at 4:29 pm

We should know by the end of the year. Bundesliga has already started discussions with broadcasters about the next rights deal. Ultimately, it’ll be the Bundesliga’s decision to make who will be the best partner for them for the 2020/21 season onwards in the United States.

An excellent game of football today at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany.
Fc Bayern Munchen 5-4 FC Heidenheim. What is wrong with FC Bayern receiving 4 goals at home from a 2nd division club. I thought FC Heidenheim would win. It would have been the last day for Niko Kovac at the club in my opinion.
Thanks to ESPN for putting the game on TV although Adrian Healy and Kasey Keller are not the best pair of commentators. It was James Thorogood on the world feed.
An equally excellent game at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on ESPN3. FC Schalke 04 vs SV Werder Bremen. The roof at the stadium was closed. Two impressive goals for Bremen by Milot Rashica and Davy Klassen. It was Rob Turner and Steffen Freund for commentary on the world feed.

It was nice to see Chelsea and Werder Bremen on CBS Sports Net. Does World Soccer Talk know if CBS Sports Net plans on continuing to air professional soccer after the handful of preseason matches they have scheduled? It was a very bare bones telecast–no pregame show or studio analysis–but hopefully this is a sign that another US media group is interested in televising soccer.

This is helpful, thanks. Too many games on FS2 which Comcast (still) does not offer in most markets. Bundesliga is a tremendous product, but Fox’s coverage pales in comparison with what NBC is doing with the EPL. It’s too bad, b/c soccer is finally, truly, growing viewership in the States and the Bundesliga is missing out on converting boatloads of new fans (a la the EPL) due to a poor broadcast partner. Step up, Fox!

  74. R.O

    March 20, 2016 at 2:20 pm

I have Comcast and they don’t carry FS2 here in the Bay Area. That makes it even more frustrating as I don’t get to see many other games such as Europa League and many other CL games. I’ve e-mailed Comcast about FS2 steadily for over a year and no change.

I have the sports and entertainment package (extra cost) so Comcast should have FS2 and Goltv in that package. After all Comcast customers pay extra for the package so all football/soccer channels should be carried/included in the package.

I also learned that Fox has the rights to this year’s Copa American. I have a feeling that most of the games will be on FS2. Just not right for them to be able to do that. I hope regular Univision or Telemundo have the spanish rights.

For Bundesliga I would be happy if Fox would show replays on FS1 in the evening when they show useless talk show programing.

Yes, it is a pitty that NASCAR racing and not even live events take priority over Live Bundesliga matches.
It was great while it lasted with Bundesliga matches on the generally available FS1after the College Football season was over but now NASCAR is taking its place. Ridiculous!
How good do the BPL fans have it on NBC and its affiliate channels showing every game live!
I hope FOX realizes and may do something about it and offer more Bundesliga coverage but unfortunately it is all about the money not about the football itself ?

There is a lot of German Bundisliga fans out there,it was great watching German Soccer on fox sports 1 and 2 but as usual something good for the soccer fans does not last, so to make some more money or a way to make some extra bucks, they do not broadcast these games on fox 1 or fox 2 they are now braodcasting fox sports 2go for a payment of $19.99 a month .I am not paying 19.99 a month I will be watching free live streaming Bundisliga on my computer.so take your program and shove it.

  78. Robert Norac

    November 21, 2015 at 7:23 pm

Yea I can see why. It’s all for the ratings and right now Bundesliga ratings aren’t close to College Football.

I’m surprised that they won’t even show Bayern Munich games with all the star power on that team.

What I find interesting is this is the first weekend where the Bayern game got bumped off of FS1 and 2.

One “good” thing about Bundesliga coverage in Spanish:

Now that Chicharito is playing regularly for Bayer Leverkusen, FOX Deportes appears to me to have restructured its sublicense agreement with GOLTV.

Instead of alternating “1st pick” each week so that FOX Deportes and GOLTV would alternate having Bayern Munich, FOX Deportes has repossessed the “1st pick” EVERY WEEK so that it can air Bayer Leverkusen matches (with John Laguna and Mariano Trujillo calling the matches, usually from Los Angeles with the exception of last week when FOX Deportes sent them to Europe for a week.)

That means GOLTV can air Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund matches almost every week.

  83. Timm

    October 23, 2015 at 4:22 pm

    Gaffer,

Am I mistaken believing that Fox’s soccer coverage of Bundesliga matches uses announcers who are not at the matches? I’m watching Hoffenhiem v. Hamburg and it just sounds as if the announcers are in distant studio somewhere. I know ESPN used to do this all the time, but I was hoping this was a thing of the past.

    Just wondering.

    • Christopher Harris

      October 23, 2015 at 7:07 pm

FOX Sports has been mixing up their commentating options. Some weeks they’ve included the feed from the UK announcers (I believe BT Sports). Other weeks they’ve used the English-language world-feed. But more recently they’ve been using their own announcers such as Keith Costigan, Brad Friedel, etc. So, for most of the games, the announcers are calling it off a TV.

      • Timm

        October 24, 2015 at 12:09 pm

Thanks for the update. I guess what always troubled me about announcers watching a match on tv and broadcasting is that they see the same things I see; whereas announcers at the grounds see other aspects of the matches developing off-camera, which may add a great deal to the broadcast.

I really hoped this type of announcing was from a bygone era. However, I guess there must be some rationale (financial, perhaps?) for Fox to use their own announcers in Los Angeles. Sadly, off-site announcers tend to offer so little, I end up watching the matches on mute.

    • OT

      October 23, 2015 at 7:21 pm

FOX Sports used Los Angeles-based announcers to call Hoffenheim vs Hamburg “off tube”. Ross Dyer and Keith Costigan.

FOX Sports is using “low profile” soccer match telecasts (such as UEFA Europa League, Bundesliga, and women’s friendlies, all of which draw 100,000 viewers or fewer) to develop announcers and production personnel.

That’s what FOX Sports should be doing as it needs to have 4-5 good announcing teams for World Cup Russia 2018. Right now, FOX Sports really only has one good U.S.-based announcing team: John Strong and Alexi Lalas.
