Will Liverpool – Man City be available on demand on ESPN+?

Yes, an on-demand version of the game is already available on ESPN+

ESPN had 3 of its people at Wembly today, Alexis Nunes and the 2 analysts, Don Huchison who I believe lives in the UK and the African American gentleman who’s name I don’t remember. Why didn’t they send its commentators to London? It looks like Jon Champion and Taylor Twellman did commentary from its studios in Bristol, CT
I wonder if Ian Darke, Stewart Robson, Steve McManaman was available?
We’re paying for ESPN+ and game is not on TV, so where is the world feed? I saw popups for upcoming MLS games and the women’s FA Cup Final. Fox wouldn’t even do this.
This might be something for you and Kartik to talk about on the next podcast. Please excuse my rant.

              May 14, 2022 at 10:46 pm

Champion and Twellman are commentating a MLS game on Sunday, so they did the FA Cup call from the studio. They’re ESPN’s lead commentary duo, hence the reason why they didn’t pick Ian Darke and Stewart Robson.

                May 15, 2022 at 12:22 am

Wow, Is that their excuse? This is an FA Cup Final, not an International friendly. ESPN could have made an exception. Where is Sebastian Salazar, Alejandro Moreno? They can do the MLS game. They have plenty of people for it. Champion and Twellman could have done the MLS game from ESPN’S London studios or is that not possible? ESPN’s business model seems to be to do a lot of cost cutting hence why they won’t improve their product.

On the 4 ESPN channels during the Chelsea Palace game that I get from my basic cable package. Sportscenter, Cheerleading Softball and Climbing, not much there to compete with the most popular sport in the world. It is the English FA that is to blame they sell the rights they should be concerned about how available the game is in the USA. All about greed and possibly a lack of intelligence or even basic concern from the FA.

Just watched the Pathe film of 1966 FA Cup and as an American relatively new to following English Football have always remembered the FA Cup was like the Super Bowl at one time and now seems like it’s secondary which is sad bcuz the history and meaning is there to make it epic. I think internationals don’t feel it’s importance and loses is luster. Bring back the meaning…say the Premier League winner vs. FA Cup winner is England’s Champion. That way all the international players would know it’s importance. Would love to see a single match mean something bcuz even the league winner usually wins weeks before the end and it’s never in a head to head match. Gotta bring back that head to head matchup…90 minutes for all the glory.

    • Christopher Harris

      January 29, 2020 at 8:16 am

I understand the sentiment of what you’re saying, but there’s already a final that pits the winner of the FA Cup against the Premier League champions. And that’s the FA Community Shield, which is played in early August one week before the Premier League season begins.

At the end of the day, the only thing that would resuscitate the FA Cup is to offer the prizewinners a vast amount more in cash than they currently do. The reason clubs prioritize the Premier League is because of (1) the enormous amounts of TV money they get, and (2) the prospect of playing in the UEFA Champions League where the TV revenue is even greater.

            February 5, 2020 at 5:07 pm

Chris, this happened last year for one of the replays. Surely the game was shot in HD and shown. I’ve certainly seen highlights after the fact. ESPN already paid for the rights. I can’t for the life of me imagine why once again they didn’t show a match we actually wanted to see. Yet in regular rounds they were showing all 32, all 16 matches. Last year you said you had a contact at ESPN and were going to ask. You said they just forgot to put it up. Surely that couldn’t have happened again.

The next time I meet with ESPN, I’ll ask them to go into more detail about it. What I do know is that the only two replays televised live were Oxford-Newcastle and Spurs-Southampton, so there were no plans to televise Liverpool-Shrewsbury (or the other replays) live.

    • Christopher Harris

      January 27, 2020 at 2:33 pm

Has the Arsenal v. Bournemouth match and the FA Cup Draw been pulled off ESPN+? I swear the match and the draw were showing on ESPN+’s schedule, but now they are not on the app or schedule at all. The draw should be occurring as a type this.

To be fair the EPL and the Champions League have long surpassed the FA cup in prestige. The big clubs generally field reserve players for cup games, and moving the semis to Wembley also helped diminish the importance of the Final

ESPN is a despicable group of knot-head suits. Forcing soccer fans to pay extra for the FA Cup Final is not only a stab in the back but to me an incredibly stupid decision. I cannot imagine that they can make more money for the pay-TV instead of offering it on their primary platform. The way you make money is to have more viewers. That’s what advertisers look for. Put the FA Cup Final on regular ESPN and I think the network could charge more in commercial rates than what they will extract from fans paying extra. Remember, this is the same network that removed a football announcer whose last name is Lee from calling a game in the south during the confederate statue controversy. In truth, announcer Lee is Chinese. Amazing.

The League Cup Final is on Sunday and ESPN won’t show it on TV. At least Turner Sports decided to show the Europa League Final on TV, ESPN won’t even do that. Not even in Spanish on ESPN Deportes. Will the FA Cup Final be on TV? I’m not betting on it. Expect ESPN to show some High School Sports instead.

    • cliff

      February 19, 2019 at 11:25 am

Probably some HS basketball for ESPN spends more hrs throughout the year, on all its platforms showing BB (it’s cheap to produce & quick so they can show 6 games in a day on just 1 channel), All that said I believe the FA final will be on TV either ESPN or ABC.

  26. Kevin

So ESPN buys the rights to the tournament, then doesn’t show it on TV?? I’m so sick of networks trying to force people over to their apps, I’m not going to pay for 8 different streaming services! Looks like I’m watching Chelsea-United on some pirated stream again.

I thought I read at the start of the season that ESPN+ announced that they would show ALL of the FA Cup matches starting with the first round, but most of the 4th round replays were not available. I’m also curious why the replays were not shown.

    • Christopher Harris

      February 6, 2019 at 6:14 pm

I contacted ESPN+ and they said that their ability to stream the replay games depends on the availability from IMG. From here on out, they will likely show any replays for the remainder of the competition.

      • Paul

        February 6, 2019 at 10:33 pm

There are no replays from the 5th Round onward. Scrapping of replays at the 5th Round stage was schedule to be introduced in 2020 but was brought forward to 2019 just before Christmas 2018. All games, if level after 90 minutes will go into 30 extra time followed by penalties, if still level.

Chris, can you explain (or ask) why ESPN+ has simultaneously made the EXCELLENT decision to show ALL of the Third & Fourth round proper initial fixtures, while NOT showing most of the (arguably more interesting) replays???? I saw that they did this for the third round replays, and they appear to be doing it again for the fourth round replays, where, for example, they are only showing ONE match today! Why?

My $280 smart TV has ROKU built in and I can justify paying the $4.99 a month for ESPN+. The soccer catalogue that ESPN+ has built makes it quite worth the cost. Also, Fox didn’t bid on the FA cup rights, they gave them up without a fight.

  33. Frank

I’ve enjoyed watching the FA Cup for years, the David vs Goliath aspect, the neat venues some of the lower division teams play at. To have it all on ESPN+ is a shame. I hope soccer fans tune it out and get it back on TV. I pay a very steep price to have the sports package. It is a slap to the face. ESPN doesn’t care about sports, it is all about greed. I went looking for the FA cup today and just foun]nd out. It is a shame, extremely disappointing.Does ESPN really want more suscribers to bail on them?

        Hello Chris,
ESPN also made the business decision to offer some UEFA NATIONS LEAGUE games on TV & some on ESPN3 with the majority of UNL games on ESPN+ Why not do the same with the FA Cup? Where is ESPN Deportes in all of this. ESPN Deportes can be the home for some big FA Cup games just like Univision Deportes is home for the big UNL games? Where am I going wrong?

      • Jawz

        January 27, 2019 at 10:04 am

Martin Shkreli made the business decision to overcharge for medicine.
ESPN$ is making a greedy business decision to show the FA Cup of PPV. If they don’t show it, why did they buy it?
I made the business decision to downgrade my cable package to not include ESPN, and ignore what’s on there. Trying to avoid anything Disney for a while.
I really despise these greedy bastards who don’t care about US soccer fans, and hope that they rot in hell. If they don’t show it, why did they buy it?

The BBC did show some first and second round games the last couple of years and I think Fox did, although I don’t totally remember. If first and second round games are shown in the UK then I hope ESPN+ would pick them up as well.

  41. Kevin

    August 5, 2018 at 1:34 pm

With the FA Community Shield being on ESPN+, one has to wonder if the ESPN networks are ultimately where they’re putting the FA Cup (and probably Serie A), which is going to complicate things, with ESPN’s college basketball commitments blocking out linear coverage of the 12:15/12:30 game. It would be a shame if they put every match on ESPN+ except for the final (and maybe the 7:00 hour games), though, but the FA Cup as a whole has lost a lot of its luster since it’s taken a backseat to Premier League survival.

At least for Serie A, Sunday afternoons seem to be in the clear.

Don’t forget that it is being packaged with the Serie A rights. With R0naldo’s move to Juventus and overall improvement in Serie A play in the last couple of years, someone will probably pick it up. My guess is ESPN +

FA Cup is a TV provider nightmare. No one is interested until at least Jan even though it starts in Sept. Also due to the fact that teams are drawn together does not help advertisers build on strength of TV schedule. EPL is fixed so you know what you are getting in advance. If FA Cup is overpriced then I really don’t blame providers not bidding.

  45. Brendan

Can not see it happening . NBC has 4 seasons of EPL left . Don’t be surprised if they don’t bid on it . Cost my friend . That’s what happened to the FACup . The Community Shield which is the curtain raiser to the new season which is part of the FA Cup package is on August 5th . No broadcaster has bought it

I read the Fox announcement but I suppose there is still a chance they could reconsider. Is there any solid news at all on what is happening with FA Cup rights for next year? I’d be fine with them going on ESPN+ if we could be guaranteed to be able to see most of the games.

When NBC gets the fa cup coverage?

It would be wonderful if NBC bought the rights and it would make sense in one way since for many weeks the FA Cup and the Premier League aren’t scheduled at the same times

Anything on the FA TV rights? Is there a deadline to make the purchase or is it open until someone buys it.

No word yet but we should find out by the end of the month.

Well, it is now for sure that Fox won’t cover the FA Cup for the 2018/19 season (as speculated already in Feb 2018: https://worldsoccertalk-wp.futbolsites.dev/2018/02/22/img-combining-fa-cup-tv-rights-serie-try-force-sale-usa-says-source/) as they announced which sports they cover via foxsoccermatchpass.com:

You can stream the following content on FOX Soccer Match Pass for the 2018/19 Season:

Soccer: Bundesliga, Bundesliga 2, FIFA Confederations Cup, CONCACAF Gold Cup, MLS, Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, German Super Cup, USA friendlies, Mexico friendlies, England friendlies, CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers, International friendlies, FIFA Club World Cup, FIFA U-17 World Cup India, FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea Republic.

FOX Soccer Match Pass also streams content outside of live games including: Bundesliga weekly and monthly shows.

Rugby: AFL, NRL, Stobart Super League

Quite frankly, I’m only interested in 1. & 2. Bundesliga. 🙂 And I hope they will now lower the subscription fee with the loss of the FA Cup rights.

There are too many problems with cup competitions, most importantly their irregular schedule – games maybe once a month and only for about 4 months a year (w/ Premier League clubs: 1st round proper is Jan05, the final is May18). Plus, you have the ancient rule of replays. But I hope someone like ESPN+ will cover it…

Sounds like ESPN+ is the right channels to cover the FA. With Apple TV, you can watch a four channel, multiview of four games. i would love to watch all the games.

The Friday Febuary 16th game LeicesterCity v Sheffield United is on Fox Soccer Plus tape delay at 4: 30pm . The Brighton v Coventry on Saturday 17th is on 2:30pm tape delay

You need to update your schedule for the FA Cup fourth round . FOX 1 & 2 have more games listed on the 27th & 28th . Also Fox Soccer Plus have a boat load of games on the 27th

Will there be any tv coverage for the FA Cup 3rd round draw tomorrow?

FOX has no plans to air it on TV or streaming unfortunately, so no.

Is there a US channel showing the FA Vase and FA Trophy games in May?

Are the commentators set for the FA Cup semi-finals? I need to plan which game I watch at home (with great commentary), and which game i watch at the pub (drowning out the commentary).

    • Christopher Harris

      April 21, 2017 at 9:29 pm

Unfortunately FOX rarely announces the commentators ahead of the game. I’ve asked them in the past for the list of announcers, but nothing. If I find out the names ahead of time, I’ll post them here.

I can’t believe Fox is showing NASCAR instead of the Chelsea vs. Spurs (FA Cup semi-final) on TV (FS1 or Fox.) WT? How long does Fox have rights to FA Cup? When it’s up I hope ESPN bids for it and gets it. So tired of Fox Soccer. They port the majority of Bundesliga game over to FS2 or Fox Soccer2go, same for Europa league and quite a few of the Champions League games.
At least the German DFB Pokal semi between Dortmund and Bayern is being shown on ESPN2.

      April 21, 2017 at 6:34 pm

It’s definitely a tough weekend for Bundesliga fans during the next few days. Every single game televised is on FS2.

FOX has the FA Cup rights through until the end of the 2017/18 season.

        April 22, 2017 at 4:23 pm

Thanks. Well it turns out the Chelsea-Tottenham FA Cup semi was on over-the-air Fox. I missed it. Last night it was still listed on Comcast and LiveSoccer TV as being shown on FoxSoccer2go and other. When did Fox change it?

Ticks me off that I didn’t notice until last 5 minutes of the game.

R.O, that’s why you should always use the TV schedules at World Soccer Talk. They’re more reliable and updated first (and more frequently) than at LiveSoccerTV. We have contacts at all of the different soccer TV networks.

Will the Final definitely be on FS1 or is it TBD? Surprised as the Fox broadcast did well last year.

It’s to be determined right now, but it’ll most likely be televised on the FOX over-the-air network.
