I know it’s all YMMV (your mileage may vary) but I’ve never been a fan of whip-around shows…for me that’s what the highlight shows are for, and hopefully with good analysis. Similarly, I don’t get the enjoyment of having 2 or more matches on at the same time. I’d rather just have one match on and focus on it, and if it’s boring I’ll go to my next choice. If you’ve got multiple matches on, are you really watching any of them?
But again, YMMV, so I get this works for some people.
Oh, and Ligue 1 definitely has a concentrated match window every week, the Sunday 3p/15h (CET) slot. Though I live in France I don’t have Amazon here or Canal+, so not sure if there’s a whip-around show. In terms of other match times, they sometimes do one Friday night match at 9p, a 1p (13h) match Sunday, 5p and 9p matches on Saturdays and Sundays, with the 9p Sunday being the marquee match for that week. They only schedule days and times 4 weeks at a time. If you look at their schedule for the next few match weeks you’ll see what I mean (ignoring the mid-week window coming up). The number of windows might change a bit next year when they go from 20 to 18 teams, but I’d guess Sundays 15h stays the main slot.
La Liga is really the only of the 5 major Euro leagues that spreads things out so much on a regular basis (EPL did during COVID to get all matches on TV). Sid Lowe & Phil Kitromilides have talked about it often on their podcast…something to do with how the league televises most (if not all) matches so they want to maximize viewership. At most there may be 2 matches overlapping most weekends. I think this is a change, that before TV took over, Sunday 5p (17h) used to be the main slot (but I could be mistaken on the time).

The single club in Europe with the most americans is not Leeds. Not even close in fact. It is Venezia FC. I never get to see any Serie B though. I guess Paramount plus has some?

The focus of this site has appeared to shift recently, probably related to the sale. Articles about transfer rumors, articles about leaked new kits (usually fodder for FootyHeadlinesdotcom), pods devoted almost exclusively to the EPL weekend. Just noticed today, advertisements before/during/after the podcast.

Long gone are the days on focusing on media news and instead trying to become the be all end all of soccer coverage? The new owners would be wise to realize wearing so many hats at the same time can make the site become indecipherable from the thousands of other sites focusing on rumors and match recaps and losing the uniqueness and character that drew many of us here in the 1st place.

Hi JP, I’ve been sick this week with a stomach virus so we haven’t been able to focus as much on soccer media this week as usual. However, we have an article about the Premier League TV Channel, and an interview with Telemundo’s Andrés Cantor on the homepage, as well as other soccer media-related stories. We also have more soccer media-related news and interviews scheduled for later this week.
On the rights side of the business, with MLS wrapping up a deal for 10 years and Premier League renewing for another 6 years, we’re not expecting as many major stories regarding rights. We will continue to cover soccer rights, for sure. We were the only ones to bring readers up-to-speed on what was happening with the Eredivisie, for example.
We also spent considerable time writing the latest edition of our free eBook that lists where to watch more than 110 leagues and competitions for readers in the United States, which was published a couple of weeks ago at https://worldsoccertalk-wp.futbolsites.dev/ultimate-soccer-tv-streaming-guide/
And we continue to talk about the soccer media business on our podcasts with myself and Kartik. Plus last week, we interviewed Matteo Bonetti (CBS) and Mark Donaldson (ESPN). A week before that, we interviewed Derek Rae (ESPN). For years, we haven’t had advertisers on the podcasts. But now that we do, our plans are to grow the business, which means investing in more writers – so the advertising dollars help us expand.
We’ve always had a balance between soccer news and the soccer media business. That hasn’t changed.

Thanks Gaffer, obviously been a big fan for years now and meant no malice with my comment. While there has always been a broad focus with the ‘AFP’ generated articles the feed in, the articles written by staff have become more broad recently.

No worries, and I appreciate the feedback. With a lot of the rights deals being wrapped up for several years, there’s less to write about and talk about on that topic, but we will always cover those topics as well as the other big soccer stories.
I’m on the road to recovery and hope to be match-fit for this weekend’s games!

I’ve never watched Goal Rush, but the way you described it sounds very much like ‘La Giostra dei Gol’ during the 9am Sunday window for Serie A when it was on RAI. One match being shown and commentated on, cut ins to other matches for goals and penalty attempts, etc. I much prefer that over the CBS whip around show for UCL and Europa League where we are constantly being shifted around.

beIN tried doing something similar with MultiCalcio during the 9am window when they had Serie A (one match, cut ins for highlights of goals in other matches). Would be great if Paramount+ tried to incorporate this into their coverage this season. Designate one match to be primary and have Poppy Miller or Marco Messina chime in when highlights of other matches are being shown quick. That same primary match should also have a normal feed where there are no cut ins.

I would like to see ESPN+ and Paramount+ have a “Goal Rush” show for all the properties that they have (not just for Bundesliga but for all matches being played at the same time) ESPN+ has 5 matches kicking off this Saturday at 8:30 (central), 1 match at 9:00, 1 match at 10:30, and another match at 11:15. Paramount+ focus would be more in the evening during their Brazil and Argentina coverage, this Sunday they have 6 matches kicking off at 4:00 pm (central).
I agree with JP, I prefer one match being shown and commentated on with cut ins to the other matches for goals and penalty attempts.

Media speculates possible Christain Pulisic transfer to Manchester United. My reaction…NOO!!! That is the last place I want Pulsic to go to. We want Scum Utd to get relegated. Please Christian don’t do that.

It’s interesting that you guys should mention the EPL’s media promotion of their coaches. Recently, I started counting the number of times TV crews would cut away from the action to show closeup of a coach. The most extreme case came during one of the Copa Libertadores matches last week. There were fifty-three coach closeups in the first half, and seventy-one in the second half. That is ridiculous! I don’t know about other folks, but when I tune in for a match, I do so to watch the players and the action. How many times do I need to see a coach’s mug?

I agree with your point about bandwidth for watching soccer. Liga MX and NWSL often fit well with my indoors free time, so I watch them the most. If all soccer leagues were live at the same time, I would likely choose EPL. Makes sense that fans who binge EPL weekend mornings are not often in the mood for La Liga/Liga MX/NWSL/MLS/etc. later in the day

How bandwidth impacts MLS-Apple will be interesting. Moving games to Saturday afternoons and including a whip-around show should help. But the business end of the MLS season still overlaps every major US sport and every major European league. Saturday evenings usually have OTA Liga MX. Opportunities and challenges abound. Competition is fun for the consumer

Great pod! What a weekend. Rebecca got it spot on – what are you doing if you are not watching EPL? Brentford shows exactly what makes the league so great. Here is a team worth 1/10th as much as United and they come out with a solid gameplan, great manager, and execute well. They didn’t park the bus, they played them off the park! Man United v Brentford or Liverpool v Fulham is going to be an actual match! It’s completely different from Madrid v. Osasuna or PSG v. Rheims. English refs are awful though – I hate Chelsea but Taylor was a disgrace and shouldn’t have been on that game in the first place. Every Chelsea fan I know called this out BEFORE the match, so its shocking the EPL puts him on this game and allows him to just ruin it with no consequence.

The Leeds thing is interesting because I’m surprised how little coverage NBC has given them as well. Leeds have so many Americans now it almost seems like a deliberate commercial decision, and I think it’s a clever move if they don’t get relegated. All these reporters who wouldn’t touch the EPL before MUST follow it now because half the US team is in England.

Tielemans would be fantastic for Arsenal, but not sure he makes us a title contender yet. Xhaka is playing very very well so I’m not even sure Tielemans jumps into the lineup. What we really need is a solid 6 behind Partey who gets injured often, Tielemans would slot into Xhaka’s role and I’m not sure he is actually an improvement over an in form Xhaka (Tielemans gave away 4 PKs last year). No idea why United aren’t in for him TBH.

Where to start with united? I think they are actually in a worse position than Arsenal a few years ago. Why would they buy a 5’9 CB? Why are they looking at Arnautovic? They have cobbled together a squad of overpaid randoms and have no long term plan or coordination. They “back” whatever manager is there that year, he buys a 35yr old and a 5’9 CB, and then they wonder why they are trash. Maguire shouldn’t be playing, let alone captain. How do they STILL have McFred in the middle of the park 2-3 years after we have all known they aren’t good enough. NBC is rarely insightful at halftime but I agree they could have done a better job. Sky immediately pointed out the disparity in how much each team actually ran, which tells you everything you need to know really.

BL is not fun when Bayern run the table every year. The problem is there is nothing Bayern can do – if they get worse, and more competitive with the BL, they won’t be competitive in Europe. This is the same problem Real/Barca/PSG have. There is no way to make it fair and balanced without harming the top clubs, just look at what La Liga’s strict rules are doing to Barca.
