A Thrilling Saturday for Soccer Fans

Football - FA Cup - 4th Round Replay - Manchester United v Cambridge United

After a Saturday like this, I now know why I’m not too fond of international matches anymore. They’re bloody boring in comparison! Growing up in Wales, I remember the thrill of watching the British Home Championships on Saturdays when England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would play each other to see who would be deemed the best of Britain.

The calibre of play in the Premiership, meanwhile, dwarfed that of England today as Liverpool crushed Arsenal 4-1 at Anfield, Manchester United came from behind to defeat Blackburn 4-1 at Old Trafford, and Chelsea – oh lucky Chelsea – narrowly beat Watford 1-0 with an injury time goal by Kalou.

Meanwhile, around Europe, there’s been plenty of other brilliant matches including Leeds overcoming Preston in the Championship (read The Scout’s excellent report on ChampionshipTalk.com).

Elsewhere, writer Juan Arango writes in LaLigaTalk.com about Riquelme not returning to Spain, as well as my piece on GolTV’s new title graphics onscreen.

Elsewhere in Spain, I’m catching up on my La Liga viewing by watching Valencia against Espanyol. While Valencia looked vulnerable last week, their performance in the match thus far should give Chelsea much concern after fine goals by Villa and Vincente. You have to wonder whether Valencia can tear Chelsea apart after the Blues’ lethargic performance against Watford.

The Valencia v Espanyol game was pure brilliance, one of the best games of the weekend. Valencia has so much class and Albelda and Silva sat on the bench for most of the game. I can’t wait for Valencia to school Chelsea.

So many goals in La Liga this weekend and some quality games. It’s a shame that we didn’t get to see the 5-4 Racing Santander v Atletic Bilbao. Bilbao is fighting for their lives against relegation. Ashame they couldn’t get a result. The Vascos or Basque teams are in the worst form in history. If Bilbao goes down, this will be the first time in their long storied history. I hope they can beat the drop.
