Hull City manager Phil Brown is preparing a surprise bid for US international and Benfica player Freddy Adu, according to the News Of The World.
Benfica would accept a bid of £1.5m for Adu. The American striker is currently on loan at Belenenses, a fellow Portugese side but Adu has only made a handful of appearances there. A move to Hull City in the January transfer window would provide Adu with a chance of helping Hull City avoid relegation as well as giving him an opportunity to impress US coach Bob Bradley and his staff, to make it more likely he may make this summer’s World Cup squad.
If Adu moves to Hull City on loan, he’ll be competing for a starting position alongside fellow American Jozy Altidore. Adu can play striker or attacking midfielder.
Adu is no stranger to English football. In November 2006, Adu went on a two week trial with Manchester United. Because he didn’t have a work permit, he ended up training with the team but he reportedly didn’t make much of an impression on Sir Alex Ferguson at the time.

The problem with Freddy Adu is he doesn’t have a position to play on any decent team. He cannot run the wing, he’s not that fast, he doesn’t defend, and he’s small. He is certainly not a striker, and he’s definitely not a central mid. He’s okay if he’s allowed to wander around between the midfielders and strikers with no responsibility of his own. However, he is pretty good at free kicks.
I don’t see him even earning a starting spot at WC 2014, but he could make that squad if he returns to MLS. All in all, he’s the most over hyped U.S. player I’ve ever seen.

Did any of you guys watch Freddy Adu play here in America in MLS? Well he was rubbish most of the time. He wasn’t spectacular. The Media here in the States were hyping him up. That he was the next Pele… rubbish! He couldn’t cut it here in MLS, he thought the answer was over seas? He needs to show that he can play, and catch someone’s eye for his talent, not for his hype. I do believe the he actually started to believe his own hype.

Peter – I totally agree. It’s not just about Hull City. He’s a young player with obvious talent who may have been encouraged to do too much too soon. I’d love to sit at the KC and see this lad stick 20 goals in the net, but it isn’t going to happen in the merciless world of the EPL. You’re absolutely right, in my opinion, when you say that if he wants to play in the UK he needs to go for a year to a team in the lower leagues where he won’t be subjected to abuse and ridicule for a missed pass!

Freddy needs playing time. No one ever came of age riding the pine. Frankly I think Hull City is a bridge too far – he won’t bust into the XI. Altidore is a much more mature player and even he is struggling to find his footing at Hull City, although he appears to be on the verge of a breakout if the manager sticks with him. I’d rather see Adu go to a 1st division side that needs to start him and is willing to be patient.

Basically, we should have learned that waiting for rumoured players is liking waiting for goals: they mostly don’t come. As Brad correctly says, we have a vastly inflated wage bill which, in terms of value-per-pound (or dollar) seems to mean that each goal currently costs about 5,000,000. So far there’s not news of vast numbers of teams squabbling to buy our dead wood, although if the Arctic weather continues here we might shift a few as kindling.
Taking all this into account, if Adu gets an offer from Greece I reckon he’d be daft not to take it. Personally, I’d rather be running around near the Aegean than the railway tracks next to the KC Stadium! And he isn’t going to hack in the nightmare of the EPL until he gets some solid match play experience at a less cut-throat level. I hope his mum advises him.

I don’t think it matters either way. Either Adu is not as good as people think, or he doesn’t have the mettle and drive to get into the starting eleven. Everywhere he has gone in Europe he has spent all of his time on the bench. Are those teams (Benefica, maybe) so gifted that his talents can’t find a place or does he not work hard enough to get the opportunity. He needs to play, plain and simple, or he is going to go down as a big FLOP.

Hull have too big a squad already. There is talent, but so far there hasn’t been enough connection between the midfield and the strikers. (We won’t for the moment think about the mess at the back…) Previous commenters have made good points. Perhaps if we could just clone Stephen Hunt?

I really hope this is just typical News of the World BS. Adu is the kind of player who needs the entire team to be built around him. He is far to much a liability defensively for him to work almost any other way. Maybe if he was used in a similar position to Messi, but I still doubt it. And the fact of the matter is that Freddy isn’t nearly good enough for a Premier League team to be built around him.
He really should have taken the offer to join Inter Milan’s academy when he was a youngster rather than playing for DC United.
When you can’t crack the lineup for Beleneses or that French team he played for, what makes him think he’ll be able to play in the toughest league in the world. I also really doubt that he’d be able to start for Aris right away, but its definitely a better move than Hull.
But regardless, I really do wish him good luck…as long as he stops being this annoying on twitter.

If Hull are looking to sign Adu, they have far more problem than I thought. I would love to see Freddy succeed but if a guy can’t hack it at Beleneses then what is he going to offer Hull City in the EPL.
Adu needs to comeback to MLS get some playing time and see what happens. He has no future in Europe.

Adu is a bit of a manufactured player really, named by Pele as the next big thing to try give a soccer in the USA a bit more of a lift.
Only reason I can think of Hull wanting to sign him is to make a bit of money on shirt sales and imaging.

He needs the opportunity, but I doubt he’ll get it at Hull. He lacks experience, he lacks the size and strength to match the English game, and he lacks the clear-cut opportunity to get on the pitch that he obviously needs to get on the pitch. He needs to return to MLS, play, and then think about moving back to Europe. He’s not ready for this level. He’s too young and inexperienced.

Sitting as I am in a freezing cold snowy Hull, I’d say that playing in the Premier League would either make Freddy or break him. To be frank, do we need another inexperienced US player? Altidore is still unfinished product by a long way – ok, he’s starting to play but hasn’t really got the composure yet to look remotely like an EPL striker. Adu would spend a lot of time on the bench and maybe get on for ten minutes at the end.
Still – we need some luck and so does he. If he comes, he’ll get a warm Hull welcome and maybe – just maybe – the chance to be a hero.

This would work as additional cover for Jimmy Bullard and also would restore things a little bit if we are to be selling Geovanni to generate some cash. It could also bring Hull more into the American spotlight and raise it’s profile for an American investor. A bit far-fetched but the most important things on Adam Pearson’s plate are cutting the wage bill and getting an investor. Adu certainly wouldn’t command the wages typical of most of the squad.

Adu has talent plus but can’t find a regular role because he has more me in him and less team. As a USA fan it’s great to see him get a chance and I think with him and Altidore both will play better.
It will be great for those fans like me who follow the Yanks in the EPL.

He trained with United reserve team and didn’t make much of an impression. The kid had to much on his shoulders at such a young age.

The only time Adu dominated was when he was 18 and the other players were 15. He used to be a giant compared to the other kids and his could look like a star. When he started playing against men, he failed at every level he’s tried. He will not do a thing for Hull except to create some media buzz, which might be helpful for them. As far as the World Cup, he is so far off Bob Bradley’s radar that he isn’t even a speck.

I don’t think Hull City is the optimal destination for Adu. He needs to get on the field someplace, anyplace. If he wants to work hard in practice and sit on the bench on the weekend, he can do that in Portugal.
If I were him, I’d drop down a division (say, in England or Germany) or move to Scandinavia. He has plenty of good years ahead of him, but he needs to taste success. He needs to prove to himself (and to others) that he is more than hype. If that means playing well in Denmark or Sweden, then so be it.

I don’t see him getting into City’s starting XI, to be honest. They only play attacking football against the teams like Burnley and Wigan and Adu is an attacking player. This isn’t going to help Hull or Adu.

I still think that Adu’s one of the most technically gifted players that we have available but for whatever reason he never gets a look at any of the clubs he’s played at. He was definitely our most dangerous player during the two friendlies we played against Agentina and Spain a little while back.
If he gets into the starting XI, which I’m sure he could if he gets his head right, Bradley has to take a look at him. Especially if he’s taking a look at Beasley again (just hope he doesn’t try to play him at left back…).
