Good news for soccer fans in the United States. The Damned United, the brilliant film by Tom Hooper and starring Michael Sheen, will be available in DVD format in the United States beginning February 23, 2010.
The movie which tells the story of the working relationship between Brian Clough and Peter Taylor is one of the finest British soccer movies seen on these shores. When the film was released in October, it played in select movie theaters nationwide, so many die-hard soccer fans were unable to catch the film on the big screen.
I finally got to see the film last month when it played at a small independent movie theater near me. I highly recommend it not only because it’s about our favorite sport, but because it really captures what English football was like in the 1970s with dark corridors, paint peeling off the walls and some pretty physical football on the pitch. One thing I’ll add is that it’s interesting to see how Sony Pictures has redesigned the DVD cover to look completely different than the poster for the US release of the film. That’s not unusual in the movie business, but the pictures are dramatically different.

I haven’t read/watched the Damned United yet, but I suspect it’s going to be like the book I’m reading right now: The Worst of Friends, which tells the story of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison at Man City.
It’s pretty compelling, and deals with roughly the same era. It reads like ‘faction’ – fictionalized details / conversations based around factual events.
What I’m saying is…it’s a good book.

The Worst of Friends is a GREAT BOOK, even though it is highly fictionalized in sections. Damned United also is highly fictionalized and as I pointed out to the Gaffer when we caught the movie in December, Brian Clough actually DID MANAGE Brighton for half a season, unlike the movie which implies he never managed there and left Peter Taylor behind on the beach because he couldn’t stand being so close to France and among Tories.

I’m going to second what the Gaffer said. This film comes highly recommended to not only football fans, but fans of film in general. I was lucky enough to see it in theaters in ’09 and it definitely won’t disappoint.
The real life footage of the atmosphere Leeds United supporters were able to create at Wembley with their flags and banners will give any football fan chills.
