Landon Donovan scored a wonderful goal in injury time to beat Algeria 1-0 and to put the United States as the first place finisher in Group C.
In a very tense game where the United States had numerous chances to win the game but just couldn’t seem to get the ball into the back of the net, Landon Donovan rose to the challenge and slotted in a wonderful goal to make it 1-0 to the United States.
Over the 90 minutes, the United States team played well but were again the victim of poor refereeing. First, there was the disallowed goal by Clint Dempsey in the first half which was called for offside. Second, Dempsey got elbowed in the penalty box in the second half, but the ref failed to see the incident. It should have been a straight red, but instead the only red we saw was the blood pouring from Dempsey’s mouth.
The United States will now play either Germany, Serbia or Ghana in Saturday’s 2:30pm match.
What a game and what an ending. And congratulations to the United States who deserved to win.

Truthfully, I was raised in the United States but have never been a huge follower of the USA national team, who in my humble opinion has always been somewhat mediocre. And this World Cup proved it. I was always rooting for England in this group and Slovenia surprised me in their style of play, so truthfully I think they should’ve been the ones to advance…Good luck to BOTH the US and Mexico team in the next round. And to Mexico I wish the best of luck. Argentina may not view us as such, but they ARE our biggest arch rivals, so if we win against them it will be historic.
It’s funny actually. The USA’s biggest rival is Mexico and Mexico’s historically (trust me, ask any Mexican) true arch rival is Argentina and Argentina’s rival is Brazil…funny how all that works out…

edit. How good has Cherudolo been in this tournament? great crosses, good forward runs in combination with Donovan and defended his side of the field well.

He has been playing well, but has gotten caught out of position a couple of times on breaks. He’s partially responsible for one of the Slovenian goals.

Full credit to Bob Bradley for this one. He took a massive risk with Bornstein who has been a red card waiting to happen in every USMNT game for the last year. Bornstein played well today, but I’d still rather have Spector on the left or Goodson in the middle if Gooch isn’t going to play. Great substitutions by Bradley in this one too. I thought Gomez was good in the first half, but Feilhaber played well when he came on. Bradley took his risks with Buddle for Edu and Beasley for Bornstein and got his reward. Glad for the clean sheet, now we just need to be more clinical in front of goal and hope for better performances from the refs.
Altidore may not have finished his chances, but his hold up play was good as was his running off the ball. He matured a lot during his time at Hull. Buddle was OK, but didn’t show me anything that would suggest he should start instead of Altidore. Depending on the opponent I wouldn’t mind Buddle starting with Altidore and bring on Gomez or Findley in the second half.

Sensational result for the USA! We deserved to win that game, we had the better chances all game long. It was amazing we didn’t have 2 or 3 goals(definitely should have had 2 if not for the always shaky referees).
After the injustice of the disallowed goal vs. Slovenia and another one today, the US just had to make it through. There is some justice in the world(cup)! The US made it through after bogus officiating, and as a bonus France goes home in shame after not deserving to be there in the first place.

Buddle plays better as a starter. Gomez plays better as a supersub.
I suspect Buddle could have had 2 goals or more already had he been starting from the first game against England. He would have made the goals that Altidore, Gomez, and Findley have missed.
Altidore is not in form and shouldn’t be playing. He has no goals and always misses his chances, including open net sitters. He is always taking away goal scoring oppurtunities from his teamates by getting in the way or taking the shot himself. He missed an open net, when he could have let Donovan score it, and Donovan wouldn’t have missed like Alitidore did.
Donovan should start up front as FW with Buddle giving Torres, Feilhaber, or Holden the start in midfield along with Edu, Bradley, and Dempsey.

Altidore plays quality balls again and again. He hustles, passes well, holds the ball well and has been inches away from goal several times. He also has the “assist” for the win. Yes, I want him to score, but the rest of his game has been impeccable. You won’t find another striker on the bench with his talent.
There’s more to playing well than goals. He’ll get them in the coming games. He’s been playing well and is one of the last people on the team that should sit for the likes of Buddle or Gomez.
Also Donovan up top? Sure, maybe at Everton, but with the lack of creativity in the midfield (Torres failed to make an impact in his 45 minutes and probably won’t see much time again this WC) Donovan should be playing in midfield.

Altidore certainly seems like he’s on the verge of breaking through and being and out-and-out world class striker. His touch is just a hair shy of where it needs to be. My guess is it will be there sooner rather than later.
For example, in two years I think you’ll see Altidore give the ball back to Donovon on that last scoring run. The proper play on that run was not to force it into the marked Dempsey, but I’m nitpicking.
It wouldn’t shock me to see Altidore considered among the world’s best come the 2014 Cup. He needs to stay the hell out of racist-ass Spain, but I digress . . .

Bradley-Edu looks like the right combo. Feilhaber did pretty well, IMO he is better suited is his role he has been, late game sub to chase the game, then as a starter.
Two other thoughts:
Bradley was immense today in the midfield.
Jozy played quite well, if he can put it together he is going to be scary

Today the breaks didn’t go our way. Hopefully that changes on Saturday.

Sorry, but I wasn’t all crazy happy with this game. I was actually a little angry. There were many blown point blank opportunities to score. Dempsey was horrible. They will probably face Serbia next. If they play like they did today, there wont be a game 5.

Bornstein played well . . . against Algeria. Regardless of the next opponent Serbia/Ghana/Germany, the task will be much tougher for our back four. If Gooch really is that shaky, then I’ll take Specter on the left and DeMerit/Negra in the middle again.
We can reach the quarters (and semis, really) if we avoid the defensive gaff. Why do I have zero confidence we can do that?

F**k yes. What an amazing finish to a game where the US showed great passing and attacking play.
A few things that should be very, very clear to Bradley after this game:
1. Bocanegra plays in the middle
2. Findley doesn’t see another minute in this World Cup.

1. Absolutely. Sorry, Gooch, I love you – we all do – but your lack of fitness was evident against England and disasterous against Slovenia. I want nobody on the back line as much as Gooch, but this man is merely a Gooch shell at the moment. It saddens me really.
2. Amen. Maybe – MAYBE – as a sub when we are up by a couple.
3. Hells yeah. I said that before the England game and he proved he belonged against Slovenia. His play today should have erased any doubts.
4. Spector takes left back. Maybe Beasley if we must. But Bornstein gives me fits. The fact that Howard & Donovan had to “coach” him all game proves that he does not belong.
5. Gomez sits in favor of Buddle. Or Donovan or Dempsy up top. That opens a spot for another talents midfielder..

ESPN is run by absolute clowns. After that game they lead their flagship program and post game show with TMZ garbage!
They have all that momentum and they interject rape of a minor by an asshole former football player?!? That story would have been buried behind any other championship type game with a dramatic finish…especially one ESPN was broadcasting What a joke…an absolutely fucking joke.
The story of soccer in this country…two step forward but theres always one back.

I actually just thought that was typical ESPN…they cover trials better than the super bowl. They have turned into E! for men. They basically turned me off to mainstream American sports completely…I hope they never ruin soccer like they have everything else.
