Blackburn Rovers vs Wigan Athletic: Open Thread

Blackburn’s Premier League status is hanging by a thread. Anything other than a win tonight at Ewood Park will send them down to the nPower Championship next season. Meanwhile, a win for Wigan Athletic today will guarantee their Premier League survival for another season. Needless to say, there’s everything to play for in today’s match (2:45pm ET/7:45pm BST; live on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com in the United States).

Blackburn team: Robinson, Olsson, Givet, Dunn, Modeste, Pedersen, Dann, Orr, Hoilett, Yakubu, Lowe

Wigan team: Al Habsi, Alcaraz, McCarthy, Caldwell, Di Santo, Maloney, McArthur, Boyce, Beausejour, Moses, Figueroa

With a relegation battle like this one, expect plenty of fireworks on the pitch tonight. Plus, if the night doesn’t go well for Rovers, expect a lot of abuse to be directed at manager Steve Kean by the Rovers supporters.

May the best team.

I’ve only been following Blackburn for two years, but this is still an incredibly depressing thing. I’ve been resigned to relegation for a while, but once it finally happened it’s still depressing.

Does anyone know where you can legally watch the Championship in the US? FoxSoccer2Go is great to watch the Premier League on demand, but I assume there’s no way I’ll be seeing most of Blackburn’s matches next year?

Many of the Championship matches will be on FOX Soccer 2Go next season.

Condolences to you – that’s a good and proud northern team with 70+ years in top flight. But the Rovers will be back. Can’t keep a good club down for long.

Speaking from the experience of watching City get relegated all the way down to the third tier not long ago, I will tell you that it actually becomes a bit fun watching your club claw its way back up. As the Rovers will, by Arte et Labore!

The first former Premier League champion to get relegated. Kind of strange to think of it, but the “Blankcheck Rovers” did indeed win it back in ’94-’95.

8 years of Wigan in the top flight since their promotion. Who could have seen that coming…

Commiserations to Blackburn who is relegated, while congratulations to Wigan for staying up for their eighth consecutive season.

Don’t even know what to say. Kean’s got to get the axe now.

Such a disaster of a season.

This game has finaly sped up, the first half was just terrible.

Second half of Blackburn vs Wigan delayed after paramedics called in after Blackburn defender Gaël Givet is taken ill.

That was followed by a fan running on to the pitch and throwing his season ticket at manager Steve Kean. And now there’s a security guard next to Kean to protect him.

Not a good start to second half.

    Cheers,
    The Gaffer

Yakubu’s dinner temporarily escaped and made it on the pitch.

Blackburn fans clearly aren’t happy. Along with the “protest” chicken, they’ve been chanting “Kean Out!” for a solid 10 minutes.
