Oh, Peter Odemwingie. When will you learn? The West Bromwich Albion striker has hit out at his club by saying that they broke a gentleman’s agreement which would have seen the Nigerian footballer join Queens Park Rangers.
According to The Guardian, Odemwingie met today with West Brom’s legal director and technical director and has been given a few days off.
In case you missed it, or if you want to watch it again, here’s the comedy gold interview with Odemwingie by Sky Sports at Loftus Road where the man turned up unannounced to push through his transfer.

West Brom didn’t want to sell him because they felt he was needed. Now, his contribution will be minimal because he may be suspended for a short time and even if he gets to play the supporters will boo him to no end affecting his play, not to mention the entire team. How does this help West Brom if they feel he is important to them?
The only thing West Bom has done is show that a player cannot dictate any transfer interest. Commendable as that is I’m not sure how it helps West Brom when they clearly need to concentrate on getting points rather than be distracted by this affair.

Personally I find the whole “getting permission” concept in world football pretty appalling. Players are treated as property rather than employees and the lack of mobility or options should a club refuse to allow relocation smacks of feudalism. What recourse do players unhappy with their current situation have other than handing in a transfer “request”, which might or might not be accepted?

Part of it is to prevent possible dirty tricks- If Team A’s player secretly goes to Team B to try and get signed, Team B might try and get that player to subtly tank while still with Team A to help Team B, especially in a Team A/Team B game…Granted it’s unlikely because of the huge ramifications if they get caught, but by giving permission at least Team A knows Team B is talking to the player, so they can at least try and make the best deal for themselves..

He was keen to join QPR because of the money, right? Because otherwise, I do not understand why anyone would be running TO that team at this point.

There was a deal in the works between QPR and West Brom but it was doomed after Junor Hoillete turned down a loan move to West Brom. Odemwingie didn’t know this so he assumed the transfer was going through and decided, on his own, to go to London.

As a Nigerian and a fan of Peter Odemwingie, I am disappointed at the way he handled this situation. He has become a laughing stock on the internet. He disrespected himself and his club. Kudos to QPR for not entertaining his shenanigan. Everyone knows you DO NOT drive up to another club without permission from your current employers. He needs to be able to keep his emotions in check and not go on a twitter outburst. I wonder if he will ever play for WBA. Oh by the way, he claims money is not his motive for wanting to leave but can someone tell me who in their right mind leaves a club battling for European qualification for a club battling for premier league survival. This is a big shame.
