Given their current situation, it’s hard to believe that Blackburn Rovers were once Premier League champions in 1995 and founding members of the Football League in 1888.
On December 13, 2010, the Venky’s, the new owners of Blackburn Rovers, decided to sack manager Sam Allardyce. At the time, the club sat in 13th place in the Premier League. Ever since then, the club has descended into a whirlwind of chaos, disorganization and poor results on the pitch. And just a few weeks ago, they skirted with relegation from the Championship to League One, before finishing the season in 17th place.

I wish I had taken a screencap of the Venky’s wikipedia entry about a year ago. Some Rovers fan had gotten on and vandalized it all to hell. It was quite funny and was up for a good long while.

I’m not going to defend Venkys’ seemingly remote and clumsy ownership stint at Ewood park. They made some silly and stubborn mistakes and I can’t fault Blackburn fans for being frustrated.
However – Blackburn were a yo-yo club way before Venkys took over. And I have this gnawing feeling that if Venkys owners were blue-eyed “biscuit-men” from Northern Europe, as opposed to India – would they have gotten as much grief?

If the biscuit men failed to communicate with the fans, made questionable hirings & sackings (or lack there-of), and sent a representative to speak to the media who was clueless about the game….then yes, they would get the same grief.

Perhaps, but they were not even owners in the Premier League that long. Mike Ashley is certainly up there with them.

Not even close. Ashley cleared out debts and got a Europa League spot. Can imagine the Chicken Farmers doing anything close.

While I’m certain that Rovers supporters would argue, I don’t think of going from 13th to 17th in the Premier League constitutes falling. Been in administration? Had a fire sale? How many relegations? Been sold to any unscrupulous owners?
On the other hand, Portsmouth is showing England how to take control of a club. Hopefully the next few years will show everyone how to run a club with the community at heart.
