QPR Plan Move From Loftus Road to 40,000-Seater Stadium: Nightly Soccer Report

Queens Park Rangers have unveiled plans tonight to move from Loftus Road to a brand-new 40,000-seater stadium approximately 2.5 miles from the club’s current ground.

QPR Chairman Tony Fernandes said:

“Loftus Road is – and always will be – a special place for the club and our supporters, but we need more than an 18,000 capacity.
“With no option of expanding here, we have to look elsewhere and we welcome the Mayor’s and Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s commitment to regenerate the area, which includes an option to develop a new stadium at Old Oak as a key catalyst to bring forward redevelopment, cementing our future in this part of West London.”

The plans for QPR’s new stadium are part of a larger regeneration plan for that area of London, which — if it goes through — will ultimately be part of an area larger than Canary Wharf, and may generate as many as 50,000 jobs and 24,000 homes.

With a project of this size and scope, it could be years before the stadium is built and ready (the working name for the stadium project is The New Queens Park). And there are a lot of things that could happen between now and then. For QPR, their top priority should be trying to get back into the Premier League.

Loftus Road is so awesome. So tight and compact.

Playing the MLS All-Star Game at 9:30pm means no foreign audience at all. Not smart on MLS’ part.

ESPN & FOX probably should be talking to Henry about staying in the U.S.
