AC Milan Sacks Clarence Seedorf To Hire Filippo Inzaghi As New Manager

AC Milan announced they will have a new manager to start the upcoming season. Filippo Inzaghi replaces his former Milan teammate Clarence Seedorf as the club’s new gaffer on a two-year contract.

Seedorf retired professionally as a footballer in January after playing in Brazil for Botafogo to take the Milan job. The former Netherlands international was let go after managing just 19 matches. The club vastly improved under him and came close to helping secure a Europa League spot but the Rossoneri were just short of passing Torino due to head-to-head points. The 2014-15 campaign will mark the first time in 17 years that Milan will not compete in European competition. It became obvious that Seedorf was going to be the scapegoat for a disappointing season when club president Silvio Berlusconi said on Saturday that the 38-year-old was not going to be a part of Milan’s future plans.

“We’ll see at the next board meeting what solution we find for Clarence Seedorf, but that’s enough talking about the past, we are looking to the future. I’ve seen that Inzaghi is very determined, hungry for victory and absolutely in line with everything we want Milan to be. We want a team which wins, plays convincingly and entertains the fans. I hope that next season we can field a team which can start a new cycle. We have to become among the top competitors again like we have been for the past 30 years, at the moment we are between one cycle and another,” said Berlusconi to reporters at the club’s new headquarters.

Similar to Seedorf’s experience before this season, Inzaghi has never managed a professional club but he has been the under-19 team coach for Milan since 2012. The men were teammates from 2002-2012 where they won two Serie A titles and two Champions League trophies during the time span. The former Italian international may not be regarded in the class of footballers as Seedorf was but the 2006 World Cup winner is underrated as he is second all-time in goals in European competitions with 70. Unlike the four-time winner of the Champions League, Inzaghi will have an off-season to buy and sell players that fit his philosophy.

Historically, Milan is one of the greatest clubs the world has ever seen but they’ve fell on hard times. Maybe the 40-year-old can guide the squad back to their successful days but he has to rebuild the roster before they can contend for trophies again.
