1.5 million tune in for Copa America final on beIN SPORTS

bein-sports

A total of 1.5 million people tuned into beIN SPORTS for the exciting Copa America final between Chile and Argentina on Saturday, July 4.

The match, which finished 0-0 in regular time, was taken into extra time followed by penalty kicks and was eventually won by the host nation, Chile, for the first time in tournament history.

beIN SPORTS has reported good viewership numbers throughout the tournament, with close to 14 million viewers for the Group stage followed by 3.8 million for the quarter-finals.

The 1.5 million viewers can be divided up between the English-language channel and Spanish-language channel. Remaining consistent with the rest of the Copa America viewership, the Spanish language channel (beIN SPORTS en Espańol) pulled away with the bigger numbers. About 1 million of the viewers tuned in to the Spanish-language channel, while 464,000 watched the English-language channel.

beIN SPORTS has not received much criticism for their coverage of the Copa but the majority of Americas with interest in the tournament seem to be more interested in watching the Spanish-language channel. One major concern entering the tournament was the lack of diversity amongst the broadcasters and play-by-play callers and perhaps this was a way viewers showed their preferences.

These numbers paint an interesting picture of the soccer viewership in the United States. All summer, the Women’s World Cup has received spectacular viewership including 25 million viewers for the final between the U.S. and Japan Sunday night. Combined with the fact that the game was shown on a national holiday, the beIN SPORTS viewership numbers for Copa America say a lot.

Overall, the numbers for the entire Copa America tournament were still fewer than the Women’s World Cup final, but the appearance of the United States in the final was the main reason for the spectacular World Cup numbers.

but you did not add the views from south America countrys an Europe. I would say its was way way more than 25million views. this is a subjective count of only usa region so not accurate

Most casual sports fans outside of South America aren’t going to be very focused on Copa America, and Mexico’s early exit didn’t help. Still, I would guess the Copa America viewership was a the most ever in the US for that tournament. The numbers seem comparable to or higher than the biggest Premier League games, which is all you can really expect.

Had ESPN, Fox or NBC had the games, there would have been more cross promotion, which would have helped numbers. At least on bein, however, these tournaments are guaranteed airtime and focus, which is more you can really say.

Way more people get Fox, FS1, FS2 than beIN Sports. Also the main reason the Spanish feed had higher viewers is because the majority that watched it were probably Hispanic and were either from or have parents or grandparents from countries taking part in the tournament.
