Peter Drury replaces Arlo White for NBC’s Premier League games

Peter Drury replaces Arlo White

Arguably the world’s best soccer commentator is heading to NBC Sports. The Daily Mail first reported the news that Peter Drury is replacing Arlo White as the lead commentator for NBC’s coverage of the Premier League. Subsequently, sources to World Soccer Talk confirmed the report is accurate.

Arlo White’s career with NBC Sports’ coverage of the Premier League ran from 2013/14 through 2021/22. In the nine years of commentating, he became a familiar voice for fans of English soccer in the United States.

Drury is to begin commentating Premier League games for NBC Sports when the new season starts on August 6, 2022. Prior to this season, Drury has been calling the biggest games on the world-feed, often alongside Jim Beglin.

Peter Drury replaces Arlo White: Analysis

Many of the contracts for talent expired at the end of this season, so the timing is ideal for NBC Sports to give their coverage a refresh. To be quite honest, despite how well they’ve done, the coverage has become stale. For instance, it’s only normal for the coverage to feel repetitive after hearing the same talent for nine consecutive years.

NBC’s coverage of the Premier League beginning in August 2022 is the first under its new TV deal. In November 2021, NBCUniversal renewed its rights with the Premier League for six more seasons for a rights fee of $2.7 billion.

Replacing Arlo White with a better commentator only enhances NBC’s coverage of the Premier League. Drury’s commentary style is more fitting with the world’s game. He has greater experience calling the biggest games in world soccer. Plus, Peter Drury‘s commentary doesn’t focus on statistics and storylines — which was a penchant of Arlo White’s commentating.

Perhaps the biggest difference between Drury and White is the number of calls that Drury is known for. White, while excitable, never really coined a very memorable call in his nine years with NBC. Drury, on the other hand, is more poetic. He has a catalog of memorable calls that fans know him for.

A fresh start for Arlo White

White, whose contract ended with the close of the 2021/22 season, is likely to return to MLS. Commentating MLS games is more of a natural fit for him given his American style of commentating (even if it is with an English accent).

In a way, life has come full circle for White. Prior to commentating Premier League games for NBC Sports, White was the lead commentator for Seattle Sounders games. Later, White was hired to commentate MLS games when NBC Sports had the rights to the top-flight American league through 2014.

What’s next for NBC Sports?

It’s quite possible that more changes may occur at NBC Sports before the new season begins in August. As mentioned previously, the contracts for the studio talent and co-commentators have wrapped up.

By the time the new Premier League deal with NBC Sports ends in 2028, NBC Sports will have had fifteen consecutive years of coverage.

There is one commentator whose whining voice (when excited) and overblown descriptions of goals I could never stand. Turns out, from listening to the ‘catalog of memorable calls’ link at the start of this article, that its Peter Drury! Why oh why have NBC now inflicted him on us for the foreseeable future? Could be a PL season to have the volume turned down real low.

Thank you! Arlo was an annoying uppity know it nothing, I am glad to see him go. Rebecca Lowe hopefully will be next with her hoax mongering “racism this racism that” drivel. Arlo’s co-announcers will probably be ecstatic he is gone.

This is surprising news and I’d really like to know what other changes the NBC execs have in store – hopefully not many. In a way I’d expect Arlo leaving as the main voice calling the weekends’ biggest network matches would make it all the more imperative to keep Rebecca Lowe as the studio host, but considering they gave legendary broadcaster Al Michaels the boot this year, who knows?

In addition to Becks I hope Mustoe, Le Saux, Dixon and Earle either stay with NBC or get to call games on the world feeds. I can take or leave Tim Howard and Danny H.

And really, Arlo? LIV golf? You’re better than that, as a BBC colleague might say

John, they didn’t give Al the boot, his contract was up, Tirico was already in place to succeed him at Sunday Night Football and Amazon offered him obscene money to help legitimize their NFL streaming effort.

    Cleaning House:

““Uncle” Arlo White should be the top candidate to host PL for NBC”

“Under no circumstances should NBC renew Rebecca Lowe exclusively to host PL. Her performance slipped noticeably starting 2018 as she shifted her primary professional focus toward her own production company (not to mention that she became arrogant and selfish after she signed that big 6-year extension in 2016.) If Lowe wants to stay with sports TV, NBC should let her go freelance so that she can get her reps at the likes of Pac-12 Networks, grinding out play-by-play commentary assignments for $n00 per college soccer (men and women) or college volleyball (women) match at Cal or Stanford the way Kate Scott did before she jumped to the NBA Philadelphia 76ers”

“As Anna Whiteley and Cara Banks from The Golf Channel have proven, anyone can learn how to host PL for NBC”

Back in March there was an idiot troll who showed up here registered as “Hire Arlo White” and it seems he has returned under a new guise as “Cleaning House.” His main talking pints were that “Uncle” Arlo White should and would take over as host/presenter of Premier League starting August 2022 and that Rebecca Lowe was way past her expiration date, was arrogant, selfish and lazy, and that after her contract runs out he advised that NBC might consider using her as a freelance play-by-play commentator but only if she proved good at that new role. As if someone who has made millions over the years as the face of the Premier League for nearly a decade and who has been valued and respected so much that she’s also hosted five Olympics would value career advice from a troll who has an obvious weirdly personal agenda. So now the troll crawls back out of the woodwork as “Cleaning House” to suggest she approach the Pac-12 Networks to grind out play-by-play commentary assignments for $n00 per college soccer game like Kate Scott did? Now, Kate Scott is hard working perfectly nice and perfectly capable in her own right and seems an inspired hire by the 76er’s to do play by play, but what relevance does anything about her career arc have for Rebecca Lowe?

Let’s review, “Hire Arlo White” and “Cleaning House” feels Rebecca has done so poorly and devolved over the years despite being the studio host for the Premier League since 2013 and hosting 5 Olympics that she should start doing play by play for chump change in a chump minor league?

The Arlo in the studio instead of play by play is a potentially interesting discussion point–I think the anti-Arlo tone here is mostly due to his style of play by play. As a studio host I suspect even his harshest critics here would find him tolerable in studio.

Your last observation that “Anna Whiteley and Cara Banks from The Golf Channel have proven, anyone can learn how to host PL for NBC” only confirms your weirdly personal animas toward Lady Lowe. The only thing Whiteley and Banks confirmed during their brief trials is that it is easy to put a competent pretty face in front of the camera but very difficult to convey warmth, wit, sass and charm in the process. Methinks you are in the minority on this, and that most here agree with Richard Deitsch the media reporter of the Athletic who called Rebecca the “best sports studio hosts regardless of sport” and “NBC’s best on-air asset for Premier League coverage.” Look up his piece “The first rule of Premier League rights – sign Rebecca Lowe” to see how out of step you truly are.

Glory be to the football gods! I am now going to re-subscribe to the necessary cable/streaming services so that I can catch all the Premier League matches. Frankly I’d cancelled them all simply because I was sick of listening to Arlo White, let alone having to actually pay to hear him.

NBC, you can now add one more viewer next season. And somebody please beat the evil empire Manchester City…

Regardless of network, there are a few things I look for from announcers.

    1) Don’t spoil other matches. Tons of folks DVR or watch on demand. The world we live in makes it super-easy to find scores of other matches in real time for people that want to know. People who don’t want to know… mute the telecast. That’s not useful. That d-bag John Strong actually said once during a CL match something to the effect of “Some of you don’t like spoilers. I don’t care. I will say the scores of concurrent matches as they happen.”

    2) Don’t be biased. Looking at you most British announcers during CL. Fawning over EPL clubs, disrespecting other leagues. Same guys who will 100% tell you other scores too.

    3) At least make an effort to pronounce names correctly. Just because a language uses the Roman alphabet doesn’t mean it’s spoken as English.

    4) Decent knowledge of other leagues

    5) Less is more

There was once a glorious period when I lived outside the USA and had a “stadium sound” audio channel to choose from. A stadium sound audio feed solves the problem and should be made available.

    • Ron

      June 4, 2022 at 4:35 am

Giving out other scores is not usually a commentator choice

      That’s production.

Bias is usually present in the person claiming the commentator is biased rather than in the commentator

This also signals to me that Turner Sports isn’t out of the bidding for the next MLS TV deal because they will likely try to sign Arlo as their lead commentator for their MLS coverage and/or US National Team coverage since Turner currently do not have any commentators with soccer experience. Peter Drury leaving for NBC is a big blow for CBS’s Champions League coverage in my view because they will likely put Dre Cordero
or JP Dellacamera as the 2nd commentator behind Clive Tyldesley. Dre has no experience with the Champions League & you have to go back to when the Champions League was on ESPN for the last time JP called a Champions League game. I sincerely hope that CBS doesn’t do what Fox did for 2 years with Gus Johnson & put a commentator with no soccer background (ex: Jim Nantz) on the call for the Champions League Final.

Reading through all the comments on this page, one thing stands out: Rebecca Lowe is praised by absolutely everyone. Not a single dissenting voice. PLEASE ensure that she remains. I know she has a long way to travel each week and therefore often misses mid-week matches, but please sign her to a long-term deal. She’s always been absolutely superb, even back in the Setanta days.

Peter Drury is an upgrade and a welcome addition to NBC for next season. Arlo White will not be missed, but he was better than I agree that Jim Beglin would be good to have with him in the booth, but my preference for Drury’s partner is Lee Dixon. If anyone should be removed, it’s Le Saux. He’s boring and rubs me the wrong way. I’m hopeful that the women who have been forced upon us will not be given greater visibility. I like Rebecca Lowe in studio along with Danny Higginbotham. The Robbie’s are OK as is Tim Howard. Rob Green has caught on and Leon Osman has come into his own. Jim Proudfoot and Jon Champion are superb. Andres Cantor is horrible. The dullest voice of all is Efan Ekoku while Martin Tyler will likely never get over his nasal infection.

An honest thought here, would World Soccer Talk ever consider tagging posts such as this with ‘opinion?’ With many posts here, I’ve found myself triggered by some of the commentary and it would be nice to have a warning prior.

I enjoy Arlo and the NBC’s coverage, and reading the opinion that coverage has become “stale” was off putting.

    Food for thought.

          Kj,
Let’s say we’re in a bar, and we were all talking footy and footy on TV.
I then said Arlo WHite was a massive chunk of verbal diarrhea, and you said, “Excuse me, that comment “triggered” me and I should have had a “warning prior”.

I would have then said the exact same thing I said in my previous comment.
You don’t get free warnings of what others might say, especially when discussing footy. Opinions are opinions. You do get that don’t you?

And if you decided to stay in the bar, I’d probably run out to my car and get you a blanket.

          Cheers.

NBC snagging Drury is huge and a testament to their stature as a major player broadcasting the Premiere League. Nothing against Arlo, but Drury brings that extra dimension of passion and knowledge. I could see Le Soux and Dixon fitting in with Drury, but they should jump on Jim Beglin if he’s available.

As far as the studio hosts status, I don’t agree the coverage has gone stale. The team has developed a nice chemistry through the years, although I would like to see more of Danny Higginbotham. Rebecca is an absolute gem and should have her salary doubled.

I haven’t watched NBC since they had Arlo ..he was horrendous.. the best commentary team on the world feed has been drury and beglin.. and this is from a Tyler supporter… Bein sports MEINA is the best… so if they are going in that direction great! Who will now be the voice of the world feed?

    • Cleaning House

      June 7, 2022 at 7:55 am

Hell no, beIN MENA has the WORST english-language PL studio show on TV with 2 “dinosaurs” in Richard Keys and Andy Gray.

The backup studio presentation talent at beIN MENA are even worse than Keys and Gray no matter who they are.

Hosts (presenters) Andy Kerr, Aarran Summers and Nicola “Nicky” Crosby are plain vanilla.

The 3 regular beIN MENA PL pundits Didier Domi, Nigel de Jong, and Nick Summerbee are average at best.

On the subject of commentators, what do some of you think of Derek Rae? I like him, although I guess some would think his insistence on correct pronunciation of foreign players names, clubs ect. comes off as somewhat pompous. He seems knowledgeable about many European leagues.

    • Ra

      June 1, 2022 at 11:06 am

I really like him, especially when commentating Bundesliga games. I follow his Twitter feed – it is a great source for Bundesliga news.
The thing I miss on ESPN+ is the option to get the audio in German. That would be great.
For exciting MDs, I usually tune in to Sportschau to get die Konferenz audio (multi-match radio narration in German).

It’s pompous to pronounce words and names properly? Wow. I really appreciate that about Derek Rae. And I think the trend among English-speaking announcers of all sports is toward seeking correct pronunciations of non-English words. I applaud this.

Speaking of Derek Rae, it is interesting that he works for both the Bundesliga world feed and ESPN+ on a per match basis. Some games are ESPN+ exclusive, others are global. He is a freelancer.
It is interesting that with NBC, they work with multi-year exclusive contracts.

I thought Arlo this season got more excitable and he sometimes actually missed action on the pitch. As a Liverpool fan, his talking over the goal we scored in the Arsenal match was unforgivable. I’m glad he’s moving back to MLS.
Now, get rid of Tim Howard who’s an empty-headed baritone. (H/T Doonesbury). Oh, and I know it’s Disney not Comcast but whoever said to dump the ESPNFC crew: spot on, even Nicol has gone past his sell-by date.

    • MarkB

Agree about Arlo this season. At times he sounded like a sugared up 10 yr old attending his first ever match. Also agree on Nicol. Still a Liverpool legend, but he could have been called “Buzzkill” this season.

Can Arlo replace John Strong on MLS national games? I like Strong but he feels he needs to talk during the ENTIRE match with no break. It’s too much. As someone else mentioned, in soccer less is more. We don’t need the life story of each playing during the match. I will miss Arlo and hope he turns up on another national broadcast.

Arlo is so much better than any of the MLS announcers! I can’t watch a match because they never shut up . They make the most inane comments. It’s bad enough that the matches aren’t as good as the Premier League but add the poor commentary and they’re really hard to watch. I would love to support my local team but…..

This article’s angle is oddly critical of Arlo White for having an announcing style that seems more American than other English announcers. Why would this be a problem? They are broadcasting to an American sports market; it would make sense that the announcer would sound more like NBC Sports than Sky. Don’t be surprised if Drury’s delivery and style are modified to accommodate the expectations of American audiences.

It’s obvious that Christopher Harris is not a fan of Arlo White. It’s also obvious that he’s a suck-up to NBC. I wish NBC didn’t get the contract to continue broadcasting in the U.S. I’m worried that they’ll end up putting all the games on Peacock because they are greedy. I think that Arlo did a fine job as a commentator for the games. I enjoyed listening to the stats that he provided during the games, as well as his banter with his co-hosts. NBC has made a mistake in letting him go.

3 years ago, The Athletic did a fawning story about Arlo.

    I wrote the following comment
    ____________________

Terrific article, and Arlo is very dedicated to his career.

I just wish he would have learned more from the Martin Tylers, John Motsons, and Jon Champions of the world.

They understand they are calling a match on television.
White calls a match like he’s on the radio. Breathless for the entire 90 minutes.

In football commentary, less is more.
    _______________________

Amazingly, Arlo replied: I bow to your expertise, how many times have you done it?
    ________________________

Wow, is that thin skin or what?

I won’t link the article, but if you sub to the Athletic, just search “Arlo White” with quotation marks, and you will get a story about the Chicago Bears (Arlo’s team) playing in London

    Good riddance!

At first you compliment him by saying that he is dedicated and then you turn around and criticize his style of commentary and compare him to others and basically say that he doesn’t know how to call a match. And you say he is thin skinned for his reply? Seems that you are the one who is thin skinned for bringing up something that happened three years ago. I guess you don’t like to have someone reply to something you said. Save this, you can use it in another three years.

It looks like we go from screaming Arlo to melodramatic Peter. Don’t these commentators know that most people don’t watch a football match because of who the commentators are? I don’t want to be pummeled by a ton of boring stats that make my eyes glaze over just to prove how smart a commentator thinks he is. I don’t want to hear some lame “signature call” that tends to get overused and forced. It’s not about you. It’s about the football. Can we please get back to the days of the understated and humble commentators who just talked about the match we were watching, and nothing else? People like Wolstenholme and Motson and Tyler. The only current football commentator who is remotely close to those is Jon Champion.

I don’t understand the criticism of Arlo. He was fine by me, as is Peter Drury.
But I hope the studio “talent” is refreshed. Keep Rebecca (of course) and bag the rest – tiresome now (the Robbies) and clueless (the rest). Any chance we can get Kyle Martino back – the best.
But most of all can we lose that dreadful Martin Tyler on Mondays.

Thank goodness. Arlo White was so irritating that for many years I have turned off the volume because I can’t stand his constant blabbering. All those prepared starts and story lines took away from what was actually happening on the pitch

Apart from the wonderful news about the completion of the Chelsea takeover, this is the best soccer news of the week. Arlo’s hectoring style, his long list of prepared stats and his constant verbal diarrhea will not be missed. He never understood the basic premise that his job was to complement and enhance the visuals, not provide an alternative storyline with constant banter and often irrelevant comments.
Peter is the best in the business, along with Clive and Jon. Please don’t pair him with a Twellman or Carney. We need solid, experienced voices who complement the match day experience.
And please keep Rebecca, an ultra competent and professional studio presenter. Maybe shake up the other studio guests a little. Good as the two Robbie’s are, it would be a good move to have a larger cache from which to draw.

I liked Arlo quite a bit, but Drury is the best. I hope NBC will stop blacking out its own streaming platform with the new deal, and all games will be live on Peacock.

That sounds like a massive improvement from the Premier League coverage that BT sport does in the UK because we end up with Darren Fletcher and some awful commentaries for 38 League games and 25 Champions League games this season NBC could save money by showing all of the coverage of sky is 128 Premier League games.

#Upgrade. I love Peter Drury. He called the 2021 UCL final on CBS but didn’t do so this year. I now wonder if this was the reason why.

One can say what they want about Arlo, but he is real likeable and personable in spite of his bellowing nature on the mic. I wish him all the best.

I think this announcement alone staved off any off season blues I regularly encounter.

Arlo does seem personable enough, but it is precisely his “bellowing nature” or “Arlogasms” that I can’t take. At least now my dog won’t have to listen to me shout: Oh, for God’s sake Arlo just shut up! every Sunday.

I think CBS had to keep both Peter and Clive happy by rotating them for the Finals

Peter Drury is the best in the biz — this is a huge get for NBC. I hope they hire Beglin as well since the two of them have such a great rapport.

Good riddance!! SCREAMING ARLO WAS SHRILL AND TERRIBLE. He was SO bad on laws of the game; made basic errors on laws in virtually every match this season! (a truly incredible stat but true!) What a terrific job Clive Tyldesley did on the CL final for CBS this weekend. Knew the history, knew the European players so well, knew the laws, terrific. Every single Monday I have to correct my American friends who tell me “but Arlo told us offside works like this.” Me: “no it doesn’t. He just makes stuff up every week.”

Agree. I also like Clive doing CL.

I never had an issue with Arlo White. I disagree with some of the statements (“American style commentary”) in the article. I don’t have an issue with Drury either. I do like Le Saux and Dixon, so I hope they are retained.

If this implies a big shift in on-air talent at NBC, will need to see the final result before commenting. The NBC team developed a lot of chemistry over the years; disruption does not automatically result in a better product

I agree with Anthony as well. I also do not get this repeated commentary by Chris Harris that NBC crew has grown stale. I don’t agree with that and I am sure many other viewers do not as well. Their coverage of the Premier League is top notch and consistently good.

Dixon is a very unserious guy, He can’t even hide his Arsenal bias

Arlo is anything but “stale” this publication is just sucking on the teet of NBC again, because they gave the inside scoop. Arlo unlike Drury never favorites English players. Drury is unlistenable on UCL, he just is another Homer who doesn’t know anything other than PL.

They should get Beglin as well. They have a nice natural chemistry together and is a much better fit for his style than Dixon oe Le Saux

With all due respect to Chris and the WST staff, this story was first seen in the Daily Mail over the weekend.

Also, interestingly, this site was accused of anti-bias by many here during the contract negotiation period.

Also let’s rejoice NBC did not go totally woke and hire Pien the Shriek.
But we need to hold our collective breath until the co-commentators are named.

I did not mind Arlo and think Drury is great but this site always has had an issue with Arlo, he pointed out himself on Twitter once. What’s hilarious is Chris doesn’t like on Arlo but was defending the horrible Twellmann and tweeting people should move on from criticizing him, Chris is a clown with favorites.

Very, very bad decision NBC. Drury is awful.

Would rather have John Champion (without Commander Obvious Twellman). That being said, the key words here are “replacing Arlo White” and Peter Drury will do. No more Ronaldo inspired Arlogasms.
