Nominate best soccer coverage across video, audio & written word

Nominations are now open for the 2022 World Soccer Talk® Awards. Recognizing the best soccer coverage across video, audio and the written word, the awards are voted on by soccer fans worldwide. Categories include everything from the best streaming service and soccer podcast to the best commentator, writer and more.

Nominations are open today through Thursday, June 30th at midnight ET.

World Soccer Talk Awards: Nomination process

Here’s how it works:

World Soccer Talk has created several categories that span the world of English-language soccer/football culture. Our panel has recommended who to include in the categories. However, we need your help. We’re opening up the nominations to your suggestions and recommendations. Please review the candidates, and if there are any missing, let us know in the comments section before the nominations close on Thursday, June 30th at midnight ET.

Once the deadline has passed, no additional candidates will be added.

Then, on Friday July 1st, the 2022 World Soccer Talk Awards officially opens. Throughout the month of July, soccer fans from around the world get to vote on their favorites in the different categories. After the Awards wrap up on July 31st, we announce the winners on August 1st.

Drumroll, please. Here are the candidates for the 2022 World Soccer Talk Awards:

The View from the Lane by the Athletic is the best podcast out there

lmfao @ the votes for commentator and co-commentator. Twellman, yes the one that yells at you through the TV is leading co-commentator. This is what happens when you do an online poll and when the MLS fanboys troll together cause they don’t like the opinions of this website.

Antonio Aquilino was such a great discovery from last season, so much energy in his calls

Marco Messina is missing from the studio analysts. He founded Italian Football TV, and CBS has put so much stock into him that they sent him to Italy for Marzo con Marco in March. He arguably is a better analyst than Grella.

Also, Football-Italia.net, the world’s leading English language Italian football website, is missing from best website under written word. Countless news and opinion articles on the site.

Your club podcast should either include non-EPL clubs or have a separate category for them. Some I would recommend are Bavarian Football Works (Bayern), Morrisonic (Portland Timbers), and a friend of mine swears by Lazio World

      June 28, 2022 at 8:47 am

The ‘Best Club Podcast’ category isn’t only for Premier League clubs. I’ll definitely add the Bavarian Football Works. I’m not familiar with the other ones.

Oh – in that case, you could also add the following podcasts:
        * Gegenpressing: the Bundesliga Podcast
        * Talking Fussball
        * Project Fußball | Deutsche Welle

Tim Howard for worst studio analyst. Droning monotone and useless analysis.

  11. Sean G

    June 27, 2022 at 1:17 pm

Some noms I’d like to put in are: Clive Tyldesley for best commentator. Guillem Balague for studio analyst. Talking Wolves for fan YouTube channel.

      Done. Thanks Sean. Great recommendations.

Christopher, under Club Podcasts I suggest you add ‘The View from the Lane’ with Danny Kelly and the 3 Spurs writers from The Athletic and ‘Handbrake Off’ with Ian Stone and the 3 Arsenal writers from The Athletic. I think these two are as excellent as Arseblog and the Tuesday Club.

Under general Podcasts I’d suggest specifying the BBC ‘Football Daily Monday Night Club’ w/ Mark Chapman, Rory Smith, Chris Sutton and Micah Rcihards. I find most of the BBC football podcasts unlistenable but this one is great. ‘The Price of Football’ with Kieran Maguire and Kevin Day flies under the radar but is excellent.

Best website for the written word you’d have to include The Guardian newspaper in the UK, its soccer website is excellent and has Barney Ronay, Jonathan Wilson, Barry Glendenning, Jonathan Liew, Sid Lowe on Spain and Nicky Bandini on Italy. Hard to top that. The Telegraph is a close second behind the Guardian.

When you release your final list for votes perhaps include a link like www dot theguardian.com/football so voters can check out what they might not be familiar with.

    • Christopher Harris

      June 27, 2022 at 1:06 pm

Hi Steve, thanks for the recommendations. All have been added except for The Guardian and Telegraph since they’re not soccer-specific. If we included them, we’d have to include New York Times and other similar publications.

      • SteveK

        June 27, 2022 at 2:09 pm

The Athletic isn’t soccer specific, Christopher. The Athletic covers soccer in depth but so does the Guardian, The Athletic covers all sports and so does the Guardian, with both you have to customize who you follow to just see soccer. The Guardian just like the Athletic allows user discussion and comments and those are sometimes more in testing than the articles themselves.

If The NY Times has multiple writers covering soccer with 4 or 5 new soccer articles and columns a day like the Guardian and the Athletic then you probably should add them, but besides Rory’s weekly column how much else is there?

        • Christopher Harris

          June 27, 2022 at 2:31 pm

The Athletic is a sports website. The Guardian isn’t.

We have the NY Times writers included (as well as The Guardian’s football writers).

      June 26, 2022 at 7:42 am

I forgot another one for USMNT YT channel. The Soccer OG by Max Bretos

        June 26, 2022 at 12:17 pm

We’ve added it to the podcast section. Thanks.

Andres Cordero should be a nominee for best commentator.

Ray Hudson for co commentator too if still active nationally, haven’t watched beIN in over a year so don’t know!

Mike Grella should be a studio analyst nominee

Noticed you didn’t include yourself, Kartik, or World Soccer Talk in any of the podcast nominations…modesty or not eligible 😉

    • Christopher Harris

      June 26, 2022 at 12:20 pm

JP, I’ve added Andres Cordero and Mike Grella. Unfortunately Ray isn’t doing any national broadcasts at this time, but he’s included in the podcast analyst section for his work on Sirius XM FC.

      • JP

        June 26, 2022 at 7:28 pm

Thanks! Nice to see Mike Grella getting multiple mentions here.

        • JM

          June 27, 2022 at 4:17 am

Best football writer I have ever read is James Horncastle, currently writing for The Athletic. Consistently produces amazing work. He’s got to be on the list!

          • Christopher Harris

            June 27, 2022 at 8:47 am

            Got it. Thanks JM.
