What was the first soccer game you attended?

first soccer game

Everyone has a memory of their first soccer game attendance. In reality, it might not even be the game itself that you remember.

A certain food or snack just sat right after eating it. A song the supporters sang rang pure in your ears. Watching everyone launch their arms in the air because of a goal. Or, that could be a missed call, soccer fans are funny in that way.

Whatever it may be, attending your first soccer game is a precious memory. Oftentimes, you share that with loved ones to make it just that bit more special.

The first soccer game you attended

Here at World Soccer Talk, we have readers that come from across the world with a variety of ages. In the past, some readers mention how they watched Pele or Maradona compete at the World Cup in 1970 or 1986. Other readers are fairly new. In that case, they may recount watching Landon Donovan or Christian Pulisic score a hat trick. That applies to me, at least, with those games coming in Tampa and Orlando, not far from where I live.

Whichever bracket you fall into, we want to know you earliest memories of watching the beautiful game live and in person.

For some, that could be when you were a small kid. Your parents took you to your local club’s stadium to watch a game. Frankly, the details may seem vague. However, it is still a memory.

For other readers, your first game in person could be more recent. You just got into the sport, and it is something you did not care about when you were young. In this case, you likely got to enjoy some beverages and take in the atmosphere for all it is worth.

Regardless, attending a game for the first time is a spiritual experience for many of us. Using the comment section below, please tell your stories of what it was like to attend the first soccer game in your life.

As much as I love pro soccer. Games I have attended in person are few and far between mainly due to where I live which has no MLS nor USL team within a 3 hour drive. Chelsea Vs DC United frinedly in 2005 at the Redskins’ Maryland stadium was my first.

Revs v Galaxy in ’98, back in the college years. Funny fact, I think I’ve only been to one soccer game where the team I was cheering for won.

In 1969 I arrived in England at 22 years olf age. Decided to go to a match at old Trafford Man united versus Sunderland. . I really didn’t understand the game having grown up in suburban LA with the American sports. But the atmosphere grabbed me, Enthralled me. I was especially impressed with United and Sunderland players going over to clap their supporters after the match. I love the connectivity. American athletes are too cool to do something like that. I bought fish and chips wrapped in newspaper on the way into the stadium

My first game was Swansea City against Orient in December 1979. I’ll never forget it. And it was the game that set me on course to have a future in the sport

First game was a semi-pro league in Trenton NJ. First pro game was the San Jose Earthquakes vs LA Galaxy in SJ in 2003. The Quakes won the MLS Cup that year with a young Landon Donavan ripping goals for them.

    July 16, 2022 surprisingly enough.

FC Dallas & Austin FC for the Copa Tejas for those that follow MLS; a friend invited me to this match & even though I’ve loved soccer for a while, I never had the money or people to go with so this was a lot of fun despite the result which was a 1-1 draw for future reference. I can’t wait to experience another match day with a professional side

April 1967. The opening match of The National Professional Soccer League in Baltimore. The Baltimore Bays v Atlanta Chiefs, led by Phil Woosnam. The ticket was free and I didn’t know a damn thing about what I was watching, but I enjoyed it. I was 15 yrs old at the time.
