I am old enough to remember when this site did not care for Tommy Smyth commentating on NFL games for the UK audience, and yet they are now interested in Arlo White commentating on golf

Arlo will be calling tonight’s Chicago Fire game. He is under contract but the Fire may be sticking with him, despite their usual progressive stands. Arlo may end up regret taking Saudi money and come back to football sometime.

    Hi guys,
I briefly wanted to talk about a recent story that I read on the Sports Illustrated website in the college football section that basically said that the Big Ten in their next rights deal is looking to split the rights among Fox, NBC & CBS, although ESPN is also interested in keeping their current portion. It should be pointed out that Fox has a major say on if this happens because they own 60% of the Big Ten Network. With this in mind, do either of you see NBC cutting back their Premier League coverage (ex: more 12 PM ET Saturday games being moved to USA or Peacock) should they get the Big Ten?

So Arlo, usually quote active on Twitter, had been silent since the move was announced. Finally posted something, and TURNED OFF COMMENTS!. Doesn’t stop him from getting absolutely roasted in the quote tweets.

    https://twitter.com/arlowhite/status/1535770035196772352

Wouldn’t be shocked if he deletes the tweet soon.

Would love to read that thread, but the thin-skinned Arlo blocked me a couple of years ago when I suggested he shut up for 10 seconds after a goal was scored.
Didn’t curse, didn’t call him the human brain leak he is. It was a polite request.

      What a wuss.

Don’t come back, Arlo. After 9 years, we deserve to be paroled.

ABC/ESPN coverage of Charlotte-NYRB was embarrassing. Looked like it was in SD, and as usual, they keep the info bar at the bottom of the screen which is just to promote other ESPN programming. How can people bash fox when ESPN does this constantly? Yet people here laud espn. Terrible how espn and fox treat MLS and I hope that is considered for the new tv deal.

Probably a little late getting this comment sent in. There was another erroneous or at least not up to date statement. Disco George who’s comments are usually very good. Talked about all the teams that have moved. That happened so many times in the original NASL. In the podcast Columbus was mentioned, well there supporters stopped the move, IT NEVER HAPPENED.
If I remember correctly the only MLS team that moved was was the first San Jose team that moved to Houston. If I am wrong, please correct me.

Now the following post may read as if I am on something, I promise I am not.

What if UEFA decides that they are not impressed with FOX and agrees to a buyout so UEFA could package both the club and national team competitions from 2023 onwards? If I am not mistaken, the UEFA club competitions should be up for renewal soon.

UEFA could buyout FOX’s contract after the current Nations League group stage concludes so they would have time to obtain a more suitable partner in CBS and/or ESPN in time for the Euro Qualifiers in 2023 and maybe have the rights through the 2030 World Cup Qualifiers.

    I know I am dreaming, but I can’t be the only one….

      June 13, 2022 at 1:11 am

You do know the 2026 World Cup is in North America.

And you do know FIFA “gave” FOX the rights at the same price as Qatar 2022 to offset the problems of changing to a November Tournament. The problem being the behemoth of the NFL.

If you think FOX is going to give up anything before the greatest footy windfall ever in 2026, I would have to agree and think you are definitely on something.

It is weird that Arlo’s departure has been handled so perfunctorily. Just a cryptic “one day I’ll talk about how it went down” from him, bland statement from NBC.

My guess is, combined with why no broadcasters in the US are touching LIV is that the networks want to keep their PGA/LPGA events. PGA already playing hardball with players, why not broadcasters? NBC doesn’t want trouble so they cut ties with Arlo rather than risk relationships for the tour events they broadcast.

    Again, just conjecture, but…

ViX has been excellent with the football content. However, its Apple TV app needs optimisation; it tends be unresponsive for a few seconds whenever you go back to it.

Great pod some really interesting topics.

    1. The reason people are upset with the Fubo arrangement is not because we think its PPV. It’s because FUBO is not a cable replacement. It does not have the turner channels, so no TNT (goodbye basketball/hockey fans) and no CNN (the reason I don’t have FUBO). As a result, most of us already have another cable alternative, and that cable alternative is cheaper than FUBO’s “cable” offering missing 1/4th of basic cable channels. If Fubo offered the Nations League games for 5 bucks a month, without all the “cable” nonsense, no one would be upset we would just get FUBO. But I’m not paying for 2 cable subscriptions and I’m not giving up basic channels like TNT and CNN because FUBO screwed all of us and took these exclusive rights. ESPN3 also does not require a cable subscription, it comes free with my Xfinity internet only plan. I login with my Comcast login (internet only) and it works, although I would agree this doesn’t impact overall access very much because I don’t think ESPN itself knows how ESPN3 actually works. ESPN was way better for these rights though – last year several non soccer fans were talking about the “big international games” in Nations League on my group chat. It was the only thing on ESPN during the summer. Now? Not a single mention at all, even from the soccer fans! I agree with Jason, we know Fox isn’t great but this Fox/Fubo nonsense has upset me and I think has really set back the game in this country since they have the rights so long.

    2. Arlo got wrecked, perhaps a bit harsh I’ve never had a real issue with him and quite enjoy his style most of the time, but I agree Drury is much better so this is an improvement. I don’t think he cares if he ever works in the sport again. He, like everyone else involved with LIV, is making millions and several multiples of what they would make anywhere else. It’s probably life changing money for him, I don’t blame him one bit. If UEFA can screw us all and sell the rights to Fox for the money, I have no issue with Arlo taking his talents to a place that will pay him way more than he is worth. Money talks – Mickelson’s interview yesterday was brutal but he is making $100 million, I would lie and stutter my way through a rough presser for that kind of money too.

    3. Agree Wales is very dangerous, I was pulling for Ukraine for this reason. Rambo netting that FA cup win in 14 still one of my peak memories in the game, he showed up in big games. Bale always shows up for Wales too, the guy was not joking around with the “Wales, Golf, Madrid – in that order” nonsense. That first game will be huge and if it doesn’t go well then England could put us out which is my absolute nightmare (although Wales putting England out in the final game would be delicious). This WC has some very solid groups.

      June 10, 2022 at 11:29 am

Oh please. Just because you have a hard-on for the biases of CNN doesn’t mean that everyone gets their news from Cable TV anymore. Grow up and move along. And if you did 2 seconds of any kind of basic research you claim to have done, you’d see that the Fubo Sports Network is FREE on several services, including through a web browser at their website.

      • Mercator

        June 10, 2022 at 12:35 pm

If you did 2 seconds of research you would know the Nations League games are not on Fubo Sports Network, they are on specific FUBO channels requiring the full $70 “cable” package. All I watch on cable is news and sports. A “cable” replacement missing one of the biggest news channels (it really doesn’t matter which one), and one of the biggest sports channels (it really doesn’t matter which one), is not a cable replacement at all.

      • KW

        June 10, 2022 at 5:31 pm

Have you tried watching the free Fubo Sports Network during Nations League matches? I’ve tried a couple of times and it was showing poker, not soccer. The schedule still shows that there is soccer, but when you actually try to watch it’s not showing soccer. FuboTV has done a terrible job of calling the free and paid versions of Fubo Sports Network the same thing. At least copy BeIN sports and call the free one Xtra so it’s very clearly a different channel.

Enjoyed the discussion. A few reactions:
    .
    1. Arlo leaving NBC has been handled in a bizarre manner. A high-profile breakup often has at least a pro forma announcement. The entity publicly thanks the individual and wishes them good luck while the individual publicly thanks the entity and fans and expresses optimism for new endeavors. The lack of anything like that, however formulaic, is notable
    .
    2. Agree with your perspective on FOX, change is unlikely. I find FOX much better with college sports and NFL than with soccer. That said, there are blemishes to FOX’ college sports coverage, and the same sense it has all been said many times and that FOX do not make changes based on customer feedback. To FOX’ credit, they run a high-revenue sports division seemingly at decent margins. Sometimes ignoring cranky customers is good for the bottom line. It is what it is
    .
    3. I read that Arlo will still call some games for the Chicago Fire and that the team was aware in advance of his plans with LIV Golf. I am sure nothing is set in stone, but Arlo may have multiple irons in the fire. Some LIV contracts I have read about are generational money even by multi-millionaire standards. Not sure if that extends to their broadcaster contracts, but it will be interesting to see what happens with LIV

Rebecca Lowe’s reputation took a bad hit when she shilled for the Glazers during the Man Utd fan protests. Its probably good to see what the general opinion of her was before and after that. Well deserved by the way. Hope her face is not on USA airwaves anymore.

    • Lou

      June 10, 2022 at 6:02 pm

It’s not accurate that Rebecca Lowe voiced any support for the Glazers. What she did do and rightly so, is condemn the idiot protesters who turned violent and broke into their own stadium, vandalized property and injured security personnel. The Glazers have been poor owners but that’s not an excuse for condoning mob violence and criminal acts. Rebecca and the crew were taking a principled position in not cheering on such bad behavior.

About 10 minutes into the current pod and must correct something. ESPN3 DOES NOT require a cable subscription, automatically authenticates you with internet which is obviously already necessary to access the ESPN app!

    • Christopher Harris

      June 9, 2022 at 3:30 pm

Cord cutters don’t have access to ESPN3 unless you subscribe (1) to a TV provider that offers ESPN3, or (2) to Sling Orange (which integrates ESPN3 into its channel lineup).

      ESPN+ doesn’t give you access to ESPN3.

Not every Internet service gives you access to ESPN3. You may have access to the ESPN app, but not ESPN3 unless you authenticate with a TV provider.

      • JP

        June 9, 2022 at 4:13 pm

Thanks for the reply! Will still respectfully disagree. Cord cutter (no OTT provider either) for almost a year and have had continual access to ESPN3. Per the ESPN website…”The network is currently available nationwide at no additional cost to those who receive their high-speed Internet connection or video subscription from an affiliated TV provider.”
So while not all internet providers might qualify, a lot surely do where it makes ESPN3 more widely available than people think.

        • Ra

          June 9, 2022 at 5:12 pm

Same here. I have ATT fiber internet-only, and I have access to ESPN3.
It will auto-login when connecting from home, but did not have luck accessing it on the go.

        • dave

          June 9, 2022 at 5:24 pm

ESPN3 access without a bundle login has become complex. Dependent on ISP, whether the game is pure ESPN3 or ABC/ESPN3 or regionally flexed ABC/ESPN2/ESPN3 or etc. ESPN do not explain it well or consistently. Rules were clearer in the WatchESPN era. It may be like Hulu/ESPN+ blackout experiences reported by commenters – varies by individual, enjoy your good fortune if it works for you, may change without announcement, etc.
          .
My gut sense guess is that @JP is probably right that many people have at least partial ESPN3 access through their ISP. Awareness of that is low, I would guess

          • KW

            June 9, 2022 at 9:51 pm

I also have access to ESPN3 with my FIOS internet service. I do not subscribe to TV service. One thing I have noticed is it works on my laptop and Google TV, but it doesn’t work when connecting with my phone even when on my home FIOS internet. But yes, I agree it is confusing and not many people know that it’s possible. Below is from ESPN’s website:
The network is currently available nationwide at no additional cost to those who receive their high-speed Internet connection or video subscription from an affiliated TV provider.

              June 10, 2022 at 2:45 am

FWIW I had comcast internet but not cable, had FUBO. Before FUBO took on ESPN I did not get ESPN3.

It may have changed since, but that was the arrangement back then.

              • KW

                June 10, 2022 at 8:49 am

You can test to see if your ISP gives you free ESPN3 by going to the ESPN watch website in an incognito window on a computer, make sure any VPN is turned off and if you see the name of your ISP in the top right corner you will have access to ESPN3. No login required. Any live sports on ABC are usually also available on ESPN3.

              • dave

                June 10, 2022 at 10:32 am

The published Comcast policy for ESPN3 and SEC+ is “If you have Xfinity Internet, you’re entitled to ESPN3 content. SEC+ is only offered to customers who have a subscription to the SEC Network as part of their Xfinity TV service, meaning that you would need a subscription to ESPN as well”
                .
Comcast do not always align their implementation and communication. I am not surprised some experiences are different. Policy has likely evolved (and likely will change at some future time)

                • Mercator

                  June 10, 2022 at 11:34 am

For Comcast you actually have to login as if you have a TV provider, but it will authenticate ESPN3 with your Comcast login if you have the internet only plan. It doesn’t just work automatically by detecting your ISP. This is on Apple TV, I think it works automatically on Xfinity Flex.

What’s crazy is I don’t think ESPN3 comes with Youtube TV. When I login to ESPN using my YTTV cable credentials, I cannot access ESPN3 only content. So you don’t need cable to get it and even if you have cable you may not get it.

          • JP

            June 10, 2022 at 10:51 am

It should really be publicized more, because there is a ton of stuff on ESPN3. Was able to follow the entirety of the US Open (tennis) tournament last year with it. Also has “alternate” feeds sometimes for big events. Was able to follow the college football title game with it. If you don’t care about commentary language, often has the Spanish commentary feed for NBA games on ESPN, or the above the rim camera angle etc. Not ideal, but if you just want to check in and watch a bit, perfectly fine.

Yes, the info on ESPN3 aired on the pod was erroneous.
Many internet providers include access to ESPN3. From internet-only services I had in the past:
              1. FIOS: could authenticate to ESPN3 using my credentials
              2. Comcast/Xfinity: same
              3. Spectrum: no access
              4. ATT fiber: automatic access when accessing from the network. Credentials do not work for access on the go.

Hello Chris – Fox Sports is running a commercial on TV about its new APP. I’m sure you saw it. Why didn’t Fox put the rest of the Nations League games on its APP and let people sign in with their provider instead of making a deal with Fubo?

I have nothing against the LIV. The PGA Tour in the summer months especially is boring as (insert bad word here). The majors is not part of the Tour proper by the way. I think we should give LIV a chance!

    • Yespage

      June 9, 2022 at 12:54 pm

Golf is boring. Why the Sauds think pumping money into a dying game that only resurrected general popular interest because of a single player, Tiger Woods, is beyond my comprehension. With Woods generalized disappearance from the game, the sports interest among the public has nearly evaporated back to the niche sport it was pre-Tiger Woods.

  17. Mccort912

    June 9, 2022 at 10:39 am

Never been an Arlo fan really, agree that he talks to much and Peter Drury is much better but that Arlo segment is kind of over the top. His career may be over? Will you be asking the same questions for every player that decides to take the money and go to Newcastle, PSG, any of the city clubs around the world? I know they aren’t all Saudi but look up those regimes as well if you think it’s any different. Hopefully the next Newcastle signings are asked the same questions the golfers are but I would be shocked if that’s the case, don’t think anyone has asked Haaland why he is participating in sports washing.

    • Mercator

      June 9, 2022 at 9:18 pm

It’s different. Newcastle is a historic club, it’s older than Saudi Arabia itself. It’s completely different to LIV, which is a start up tournament with absolutely no purpose other than whatever the Saudis are up too. The PGA Tour is also a mob, so they have done well in making sure US broadcasters and public opinion generally are firmly against any competitor to the tour. If the Saudis started an Airline in the US I would never fly it, but if they bought United you better believe I’m not letting my miles go to waste.
