Some lovely football played around Europe this weekend and why should the EPL be any different? Well, there weren’t any headline games as we know them but even the pod’s featured game of United – United had history and rivalry woven into it. Unfortunately, we have to pick over the bones of Newcastle whilst United skulk away into the international darkness, leaving us to wonder how they are evolving: is it pretty?

I’m a little perplexed at the criticism of stoke city’s transfer purchases. Take a look at the team that was promoted to the premier league consisting of perhaps 2-3 premier league players. Robert Huth who scored nearly 10 goals as a centre half last year was bought for 6 million pounds, Asmir begovic was a steal at 3 million, compare that to de gea at 20. Dean whitehead has been in the defensive central midfield for 2.5 years earning his 3 million net transfer. Also keep in mind that stoke has no debt because they buy players that fit into their wage structure. Transfer fees don’t bankrupt clubs, wages do. Criticizing a 1.7 million signing of pennant is borderline insane, johnathan Walters has been a steal at 2.9 million as has Marc Wilson, the starting left back at less than 3. Crouch is going to end up scoring 35 goals in all competitions over his 2 years, and cameron Jerome got 7 as a 3rd striker reserve last year.
Look at it this way, stoke city needed to add 8 premier league caliber starters and at least 8 reserves capable of playing at this level. An average pl starter costs 5 million pounds, an average reserve costs 2-3.. Add it up and that’s 56-64 million pounds or 100 million plus dollars to upgrade a squad over 4 years. Basically stoke have an average quality squad with slightly above average depth.
