Robbie Earle interview: Memories of World Cup 98

Robbie Earle interview

Recorded in 2009, World Soccer Talk presents our Robbie Earle interview.

During the Robbie Earle interview, the former Wimbledon footballer discusses his memories of scoring the first-ever goal for Jamaica in a World Cup, how Jamaica overcame the odds to make a big impression at France 98, what it meant to be awarded a MBE (Member of the British Empire), how he was able to get into broadcasting, his experience at ITV, how he’s able to provide a different perspective on the game of soccer, as well as his thoughts about the Premier League.

Now a household name in the United States as one of the analysts on NBC Sports’ coverage of the Premier League, our Robbie Earle interview from 2009 offers insight into Earle’s career as a footballer in England as well as his excitement for the 2010 World Cup where he would be working for ITV. That was before a ticket controversy resulted in Earle being fired from ITV during the World Cup.

These days, Earle works alongside Rebecca Lowe and Robbie Mustoe as an analyst in NBC Sports Group’s Premier League studio in Stamford, Conn. A midfielder, Earle played 33 times for Jamaica, scoring eight times, including Jamaica’s first ever goal in a World Cup. English-born, Earle qualified to play for Jamaica thanks to his heritage. Earle started his career with Port Vale in 1981, before moving to Wimbledon in 1991. He played 10 seasons with Wimbledon before he retired. Before joining the Premier League team at NBC Sports, Earle has worked as a color commentator for NBC Sports Group’s MLS coverage and as an analyst for BBC, ITV, Sky, the Portland Timbers and ESPN.
