So HBO Max got the rights to US soccer? We are indeed seeing a new player emerge. It will be interesting to see if they will get further rights with either MLS or Libertadores.

Interesting that you are following EPL more due to concentration of quality players and teams. Not that long ago, La Liga teams had an undefeated season in UCL/UEL knockouts (except against each other and one loss in UEL). Do you expect it to remain cyclical, or is there too much money in EPL for other leagues to have a turn at dominance?

I liked the away goals rule, but it seems broadly on the way out. One hypothesis I heard is that there is greatly reduced home field advantage compared with decades ago, such that it was becoming preferable to have the second leg away. I will be interested in any data on ratings, reactions, etc., as the new format proceeds.

I think the more you drive the more podcasts are a thing. I never drove in London and don’t remember podcasts being a thing. Now I live in a place where I regularly drive, podcasts are the only sort of media for that driving time. On public transport and flights I would generally read, but now that I drive I listen to podcast and that carries over into other times like flights when I would otherwise be reading. I think AirPods and the podcast app made it much easier as well. I never remember downing podcasts back in the early 2000s, it’s always been an app on my iPhone and became a normal regular thing with AirPods

On the ESPN+ App, maybe it helps to have a ESPN account as well (I think Ra says this). It’s not quite clear but I’m pretty sure an ESPN+ account and ESPN account are different (I use the ESPN account for fantasy sports, for example and that account was shows I’ve been a member for 10 years whereas the disney bundle account shows membership period under 2 years). In my ESPN account I have favourite teams set. I think this may be linked to my ESPN+ account which is why it recommends certain items. I’m not quite sure how to link the accounts or if they are even linked, but I do get my Disney bundle (including ESPN+) though a verizon phone plan, so that Disney bundle login seems to be different from my ESPN login. However, when I login to ESPN account on a browser, it does recognise I have ESPN+ as well.
Maybe also check the privacy settings – I cleaned up my google privacy settings and now get much fewer football recommendations on YTTV and Youtube (much worse recommendations as well). Maybe my Peacock is poor because I’m sure I click no or block on any comcast (NBC) privacy options.

I recommend Express VPN for Apple TV since you can’t just plugin a VPN natively so the smartmedia or whatever they call it allows you to watch BBC, CBC etc without needing to turn on the VPN or change servers. Surfshark only has smartmedia feature for US servers, so useless to US users. NordVPN I have not tried as they could not confirm smartmedia feature worked for non-us servers. This is a poor technical explanation but I think the general point is if you watch on an Apple TV I think Express VPN is the only real commercial option unless you want full router VPN.

@JP Have you ever tried WRC+? I saw some really great footage, and I am considering it. I will never have my pocket picked by Dorna with a MotoGP pass.
NBC released the official statement on their MotoGP coverage. They botched it of course. I would be upset, even if I had cable. They will broadcast on CNBC; apparently only the races. Bunch of amateurs. In the meantime, Star+ in LA will broadcast training, qualifying, and races for all 3 categories. Same for ServusTV (available in DE, CH, AT).
Sports coverage is pretty abysmal in most networks. Only ESPN seems to have enough experts to make proper decisions.

@Ra, I’ve never tried WRC+. Never been big into motor sports to be honest, but for some reason MotoGP grabs my interest (Super bike not so much). Think it’s partly related to the fact you can see the skill it takes to handle those things on the turns (almost parallel to the ground) vs sitting in a car and steering. Not doubting the skill needed and physical endurance, just visually it’s a different animal.

Thanks on the Paramount+ tip, can confirm I see the sports tab too. Going to make things much easier on matchdays or even checking out for things off my radar (like Argentinian/Brazilian leagues). With the “old” Live tab was able to do that easily before they killed it with all the fake channels that preceded the sports.

Great pod, even though I heard more of the EPL than I cared to. Congrats on the 1,400 episode milestone!
My ESPN app also seems reasonably good in terms of recommendations.
I have a hypothesis – you may want to install the mobile version of the ESPN app, log in using the same ESPN and ESPN+ account, and set your favorite teams and leagues under Settings -> Preferences and Alerts.

They do have games involving my alma mater listed prominently, and Napoli matches when they had Serie A. But otherwise, nope. Shouldn’t have to list all the teams I like for the recommendations to work better, almost 4 years of viewing data should be enough. Maybe I’ll go back and add the entire NHL and all the Belgian and Dutch teams to my favorites (if available lol)
