‘The worst run club in the Premier League’

In the NEW episode, number 258, Kyle Fansler chats with Matt Jones from The Blue Room Podcast and World Soccer Talk Senior Writer Kartik Krishnaiyer. They discuss the impact of fan culture on soccer clubs in light of what’s happening at Everton.

When fans feel powerless against the decisions made by their own club that they’ve supported all their life, what do they do? On today’s podcast episode, we delve into the current situation at Everton and what it says about the club’s owner is on a completely different wavelength than the club’s fanbase.

Whether you’re a supporter of Everton or not, it’s something that most fans can relate to. Club owners make business decisions that are often mistake prone. But what happens when those irresponsible decisions take your club close to relegation?

In the podcast, a central figure of conversation is Kia Joorabchian, the businessman who brokered irresponsible deals with clubs all around England including Arsenal, Manchester City, QPR and West Ham United, among others.

With the season already half over, we ask what the expectations are from Everton supporters, and what can be learned. And where Everton may go from here based on the current decline.

Also discussed is the role of supporters groups and how vital it is that fans have a voice within the clubs. The controversy at the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns is covered, and how the role of fans and clubs differs between the United States and England.

The guests also discuss the effectiveness of fan protests, and whether they work to get the point across.

For those who subscribe – what is your opinion of Fanatiz? Is it reliable? 30fps or 60fps? Have you been satisfied? I am considering going from Sling World to Fanatiz, now that they don’t carry one of the competitions that I follow? I am wondering if the $48/yr deal is worth it, considering the WC later this year.

Another good discussion. I found interesting the comment that Everton are just sort of there. If I were asked to name the 20 EPL teams off the top of my head, I could easily see forgetting them. Historically, not great and not terrible.
    .
I did not realize Everton were a potential relegation risk this year (oddsmakers still have them at +450 to be relegated, consistent with “just sort of there”; related to @Michael F comment, Watford are -300 to be relegated, consistent with “needs a great escape”).
    .
I enjoy relegation battles, so I will keep an eye on Everton. I had not previously heard of Kia and came away perplexed as to how anyone with that track record could have so much influence.

I have admittedly not listen to this podcast as yet, but I wondered if Watford was mentioned in it as ‘the worst run club in the Premier League.’? They change managers as often as one changes their clothes.

No Watford mention but it could be argued that Everton is worse run especially when you look at the net transfer spend. In the past five years, Everton’s net spend is $315 million. Watford is a negative $19 million.

Watford are in trouble near the bottom of the table but in the last 10 games, Everton has picked up 5 points, while Watford has picked up 4.
