Gary Neville has some tough words for Manchester City supporters to swallow tonight, saying that the current Premier League title-holders have a long way to go to catch up with the Manchester United juggernaut — not just in the league this season, but in the long-term.
“I think the feeling among the [City] players last May may have been: ‘Thank goodness! We’ve climbed the mountain! We did it!’ But you have to learn to be serial winners and [Manchester] United have done that over the years. Win or lose, the train doesn’t stop. You have to keep going. Instilling that relentlessness into his players over the years has been Sir Alex Ferguson’s greatest feat.”
Neville added that people were writing United off at the end of last season as a tired team that had a weak midfield. But United have been through so many other false dawns in the Premier League where other clubs have seemingly figured out a way to build a new legacy by winning the title, but then only for the gates to come crashing down.
“Think of 1995 and losing the league to Blackburn and the FA Cup to Everton; think of 1998 and the Arsenal Double; think of Arsenal’s 2004 Invincibles; think of Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2005 and 2006. Sir Alex Ferguson has shown time and time again that it is responding to disappointment that energizes him.”
Expect City to prove Neville wrong and get a victory on Monday then.

Neville is right in a way. City need to have some continuity and first off they should keep Mancini. He hasn’t been the problem for City this season, the players haven’t performed.
They do need to sell some of their underperformaing players and buy replacements, not necessarily for huge money.

What is the truth about United? They spend money, sure but if you ask the Gafferfor the spend figures I sent him you will find that United are 4th or 5th on the list period. They have only outspent the rest of the league on 2 occasions and they have a pretty good youth academy. So what exactly is your point re the “truth” about United?

Neville’s observation is correct, but it didn’t happen overnight for utd, they have a great youth system. patience for that kind of development isn’t there in today’s culture.
If city had lost the title while using younger talent then that would be understandable and probably hold them in good stead. But they lost because they didn’t perform as a team and were clearly not as motivated.
They will spend, but their Barca director of football better start doing something with their youth and overall structure or it never gonna change.

I don’t understand this comment. Do you mean it didn’t happen overnight for Fergie? As he spent a hell of a lot getting there. But the team that actually won the championship was probably as a group of 1st team players put together as quick if not less time than City’s winners. And who were these youth players? They had Ryan Giggs as the only one who managed to get in the team and he was originally from City youth.

so city put together their current team in five season??? yah don’t think so…..most of the players who won the league last year with city had been there for three years tops. And thats just players like kompany and de jong…..and tevez..
United put together their first title winning side over the course of about five seasons buying players like pallister, bruce cantona and ince spread out over this time. And United did take their time with youth, lets see city cell three of their strongest players (just like united did with Kanchelskis, Hughes and Ince) and still win the title without buying anyone….it wouldnt happen
