FOX Sports revealed today that it will air more than half of the 2018 World Cup games on the over-the-air FOX network.
During an invitation-only presentation to media in New York City Tuesday night, FOX Sports announced that more than 32 of the 64 World Cup matches will be on the FOX over-the-air network, which will make the 2018 FIFA World Cup the most accessible ever to viewers in the United States.
On a daily basis, FOX will keep viewers updated on all of the latest news, discussion and highlights with two shows. The first is World Cup Live (which sounds like NBCSN’s Premier League Live). World Cup Live will be hosted by Kate Abdo from 6am ET as it previews that day’s action. The matches will be hosted by Rob Stone. Then every evening, FOX will broadcast World Cup Tonight every afternoon from Russia with Fernando Fiore as the host of the daily highlights and discussion show.
Most matches in the World Cup will have kickoff times of 8am ET, 11am ET and 2pm ET.
As of press time, FOX Sports had not announced the lineup of talent they’ll be using to broadcast the World Cup to homes across the United States. But Landon Donovan will be featured in his first World Cup as a full-time broadcaster.

In total, FOX will air approximately 350 hours of coverage from the World Cup in Russia. The broadcaster will have its main set situated in the middle of Red Square in Moscow.
As a continuation of their strategy that they created last year, FOX Sports will continue to market Mexico as “their second team” to try to lure bilinguals to watch Mexico matches on the FOX Sports networks. Meanwhile, FOX is banking on the United States qualifying for the tournament. Earlier this year, FOX Sports President Eric Shanks joked that if the US Men’s National Team didn’t qualify for the 2018 World Cup “that would [be] like $200 million flushed down the toilet.”
FOX Sports will broadcast the draw for the 2018 World Cup matches on Friday, December 1. Qualification for the tournament will end in November.
While FOX Sports has the English-language rights to the tournament, the Spanish-language rights will be with Telemundo Deportes.

I see this as good news. I have one question I see very little info about regarding World Cup broadcasts. Will matches be broadcast/streamed in 4k? I want to use the full potential of my OLED 4k tv and having the matches in 4k would be a dream come true. Anyone know if an American network is planning this?

FOX over-the-air is 720p/60fps.
About the only provider that has the bandwidth for 4K (4096 x 2160) is DIRECTV. Transmission bandwidth for each provider is always tight.

That makes sense for standard OTA/cable broadcasts. However, I am mostly interested in the potential for 4k streaming.

Fox should hire quality announcers- some of the ones used for Champions League are terrible.
Hire John Champion, Ian Darke, Taylor Twellman and some of the others from ESPN for the World Cup.
One other suggestion- get rid of Warren Barton and Fernando Fiore.

Sounds great but that will never happen regarding the ESPN people you mentioned and Fiore for some reason Fox seems to believe he is some great talent and funny? It was dumb when he was on Univision and it doesn’t crossover to English well, it is just buffoonery but he will have a prominent slot. It’s a joke, everyone should learn Spanish and watch on Telemundo or just watch on Telemundo anyway, it won’t make a mockery of it.

Team 1 (100% American): John Strong, Stuart Holden, Landon Donovan
Team 2A (100% American): John Paul DellaCamera, Brad Friedel
Not yet confirmed: Team 2B (100% American, 3rd place match ONLY): John Paul DellaCamera, Aly Wagner
Team 3 (at least one Mexican, if not both): Jorge Perez-Navarro, TBD (possibly Mariano Trujillo)
Teams 4, 5, and 6 will call matches off monitor from LA and will likely be 100% American.

I project either 2 or 3 announcing teams to be in Russia, with the rest calling matches from 10201 West Pico Blvd in Los Angeles.
Team #1 is going to Russia for sure: John Strong, Stuart Holden, and Landon Donovan.
Team #2A will also be in Russia: John Paul “J.P.” DellaCamera and Brad Friedel. They should be ticketed for the 1st semifinal (on a Tuesday).
I continue to expect FOX to send Friedel home after the Tuesday semifinal in order to save about $500 in lodging cost (3 extra nights of hotel for Friedel) and to allow FOX to introduce Team #1 for the 2019 Women’s World Cup during the 3rd place match (on a Saturday) of the 2018 Men’s World Cup.
Team #2B: J.P DellaCamera and Aly Wagner (to call 3rd place match off monitor from the IBC in Moscow)
Don’t know yet whether Team #3, Jorge Perez-Navarro and TBD (possibly Mariano Trujillo), will be based at the IBC in Moscow or from Los Angeles.
Teams #4, #5, and #6 should be based in L.A. Good luck in figuring out the combinations, as the likes of Mark Followill, Glenn Davis, and Mark Rogondino are all interchangeable. So are the likes of Brian Dunseth, Tony Meola, and Cobi Jones.
Expect at least 2 reporters to be in Russia: Jenny Taft (to cover the U.S. if the U.S. were to qualify) and Francisco X Rivera (will cover Mexico.)
Sergey Gordeev from National Geographic TV will be doing features. Those better be good if FOX wants to keep casual viewers engaged.
We already know that Alexi Lalas and Aly Wagner will be the 2 featured studio pundits who are expected to provide fireworks. Fernando Fiore will of course be the clown in the studio.
How will FOX use Eric Wynalda? FOX has shown that it prefers to keep Lalas and Wynalda separate. Keeping Wynalda exiled in the morning show with Kate Abdo would be a crime.

For those that are too young or don’t remember, back in the day when Andres Cantor and Noberto Longo were on Univision, they didn’t travel to the World Cup games. They may have gone to final for 94 World Cup. They were also at the 98 Final, but other than those games, they announced games from the Univision studio.
