TUDN still interested in Chivas TV rights for home games on US TV

With Liga MX TV rights bought and sold on a club-by-club basis, the propensity for change is quite common. And during the last 12 months, we’ve seen plenty of developments.

First, FOX Sports acquired the rights to the home games of Monterrey, Santos Laguna and Club Tijuana matches. Some of those games are shown in English-language on FS1, FS2 and FOX Sports regional channels.

And second, despite being historically one of the most popular Liga MX teams, Chivas has been unable to find a home on television for their home matches.

In 2018, World Soccer Talk reported that Univision was unlikely to renew its deal with Chivas for the rights to home games starting with the 2019 Apertura season. And that’s precisely what happened.

None of the home Chivas league matches have been shown on US television since the Apertura began in mid July.

In an exclusive interview with TUDN President of Sports Juan Carlos Rodriguez, he explained the current rights situation.

“So in the specific case of Chivas, we publicly said it more than a year ago that we did not have plans to continue under the same terms, but we are still in negotiations with Chivas to see if we can find a long-term partnership,” said Rodriguez. “We are, as you know, very well aware, we’ve been building relationships with teams for the long-term. And we want to continue with this long-term use.

“We love the Chivas family; we love the Vergara family; but at this point, they are looking for a shorter-term and we are looking for longer-term relationships. That might not help us to have a smooth path to an agreement.

“We are definitely interested in having a long-term relationship with them and keep building the very important Chivas name in this market.”

In the meantime while Chivas fans wait for a resolution, Chivas home games are available via the OTT platform Chivas TV. Plus select games are available live in English-language via YouTube.

While those options are a stop-gap solution, fans of Chivas will be hoping that the club’s home games return to US television in the near future.
