ESPN+ has acquired the US rights to the Copa del Rey tournament, the annual knockout competition run by the Spanish football federation.
With plans to stream up to 65 games a year including the final, the multi-year agreement will kick off this Saturday with ESPN+ streaming the Second Round of the prestigious tournament.
According to a World Soccer Talk source, beIN SPORTS โ the previous rightsholder to the competition in the US โ decided not to renew the rights, thus giving ESPN the opportunity to amass more rights for its streaming service.
Currently, ESPN+ streams the Serie A, UEFA Nations League, Championship, League One, League Two, FA Cup, League Cup, US Open Cup, International Champions Cup, Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana, Eredivisie, Danish Superliga, Chinese Super League, Indian Super League, Australian A-League, Sweden’s Allsvenskan, MLS out-of-market games and USL. And that’s just their soccer rights. It also includes the daily ESPN FC show as well as hundreds of hours of original programming and matches from UFC, MLB, MLS, NHL, select PGA TOUR golf, Top Rank Boxing, cricket and Grand Slam tennis from Wimbledon to the US Open, Australian Open and other sports.

The majority of La Liga teams will participate in the Second Round, starting on January 11, which will be joined by the four teams that compete for the Spanish Super Cup (Valencia CF, FC Barcelona, โโReal Madrid CF, Atlรฉtico de Madrid) in the Round of 32, which starts on January 22.
The final of the Copa del Rey will take place on April 18, and the winner will qualify for the UEFA Europa League and for the Spanish Super Cup. Last season, Valencia won its eighth title with a dramatic victory against former champions FC Barcelona.
ESPN+ is $5.99 per month, and is available in the United States.

Bein sports has la Liga until 2024.
Univision/TUDN has the UEFA champions league until 2024.
This only way to FC Barcelona and another Spanish league

I’d be interested to know whether and how a public viewing location can get a license to show ESPN+. Can’t find any information on the ESPN+ site. Streaming services don’t appear to allow public viewing, which is becoming increasingly problematic at sports bars as desirable content continues to migrate to services unavailable to us.

Annoying. We’ve been receiving requests for the Copa Del Rey at the sports bar where I work. Of course I want to show it. DirecTV receiver lists the Copa on 466 ESPND. No Copa. Talk show instead. Disappointed guests. Disappointed management.

You guys have to understand, If there is a game on ESPN Deportes, English speaking viewers get to watch it on ESPN3. This was always the case for many years/decades until Disney created ESPN+ You have to feel sorry for ESPN deportes losing the soccer it had to ESPN+ & TUDN. What did they get in return? some Liga MX games & MLS. Don’t focus on what ESPN says, watch what they do.

I just checked the guide and it show ESPN deportes will show Barcelona vs leganes and Mirandes vs Sevilla tomorrow afternoon live… Guessing they realize putting Barcelona on Plus would lose them money

Jon – FC Barcelona played in the Super Cup this past week, not the Cup itself, there is a difference. The Copa del Rey Final was played on May 25th, 2019 in Seville and Valencia won vs FC Barcelona by 2-1. I was talking about a future Final. If the 2 biggest clubs in Spain make it to the Final next time, ESPN will ignore it in favor of some other 3rd rate sport. It will only be streaming just like the Final tomorrow.

I know about the difference in competition. I said if Barcelona had won in the Super Cup on Thursday ESPN would be streaming an El Clasico Super Cup final tomorrow so how are they ignoring it? I saw you saw something about the Hispanic population in the US in another reply, well these Copa Del Rey games stream in Spanish and who’s to say ESPN won’t air a potential El Clasico final on ESPN Deportes (like the Super Cup final tomorrow) or any other cable ESPN channel.

If FC Barcelona meet Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey Final millions of people will not be able to watch the El Classico and see the worlds greatest player(s) Lionel Messi. I thought ESPN is the ”world wide leader in sports”. If ESPN is ignoring the El Classico how will they earn anyone’s respect? Do they only care about more people subscribing and nothing else? They will not put it on their main channels because it won’t get the rating of the stuff they would have to take off in it’s place. Right now ESPN is about to go wall to wall College Basketball until April, and then after April 1 it will be Major League Baseball. The few slots that are set aside for soccer during that time are reserved already for Serie A and starting next year Bundesliga as well. While WE love football and consider is numbero uno….America does not. Besides there about about 4 million people like myself that get ESPN+ free, because I have the $12.99 Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle. As for all the rest of the El Classico’s I have Fubo Latino for $48.37 a quarter or about $16.00 per month which has beIN Sports HD and access to beIN Connect. So for $29.00 a month I can see every single La Liga game all year without cable. That works for me, because I don’t really follow any EPL other than Arsenal and I can keep up with them with OTA NBC Tunein’s broadcast talkSports: Barclays Premier League (English) every week. In addition I have TUDN with Fubo, and OTA Univision and Unimas so I get every single UEFA Champion’s League and every single UEFA’s Europa League free. ESPN. Also realizes that hard core soccer fans will pay if they want to watch it. They are gearing up to make a bid for one of the NFC or AFC packages for the NFL and are moving as much as possible to ESPN+. I read somewhere they they are predicting that ESPN+ will be up to about 10 million soon.

I will subscribe to ESPN+ this year to be able to watch the Bundesliga, my favorite league which I’ve followed for a long time. I will do that right after Fox Sports ends it’s coverage in May. I’m looking forward to signing up and watching the great soccer content they have. I only criticized ESPN for 1 game. NOTHING ELSE.

Oh, I don’t know. Maybe by televising regular season NFL games as well as playoff games, which generate multiple times the viewership of the highest rated La Liga games ever broadcast in the United States. Or maybe televising over one hundred college football games including almost every bowl game and the national championship game. Or maybe with the hundreds of college basketball and NBA games they televise each season. Or maybe by offering a streaming platform for soccer leagues and tournaments that rivals anything available in the USA.
Jeez, you’re on a website dedicated to soccer and you’re still the only poster complaining about this. That should tell you something.
