CBS Sports have thrown out the “rule book” when it comes to broadcasting the UEFA Champions League on U.S. television. Instead of airing one featured match during the 3-5PM ET time window, CBS Sports are launching ‘The Golazo Show,’ a live whiparound show on CBS Sports Network and CBS All Access that’ll replace the traditional featured TV game but will include all of the goals and incidents from the live matches as they happen.
All of the games are available individually with the full 90 minutes live and on-demand via CBS All Access. But for soccer fans who want to stay abreast of all of the games, ‘The Golazo Show’ will bring everything to you in a broadcast that’ll be produced by CBS Sports from London, featuring some of the same talent that debuted in August and some additional new talent.
When the 3PM ET kickoff begins on ‘The Golazo Show,’ the match coverage will begin with either Clive Tyldesley or Peter Drury calling one of the major games in that timeslot. As goals or major incidents in other matches happen, the broadcast will switch to show that coverage so you don’t miss a single goal.
Soccer fans will get the option to choose what they want. All of the games are available with a 7-day free trial to CBS All Access. Or you can watch ‘The Golazo Show’ on CBS Sports Network and CBS All Access.
Being a disruptor in the world of soccer broadcasting is nothing new for CBS Sports in the short time that they’ve aired the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and NWSL. With wall-to-wall coverage across CBS Sports HQ, CBS All Access and games on CBS Sports Network, CBS Sports are continuing to evolve their offerings. ‘The Golazo Show’ is just one part of CBS Sports’ eight hours of live coverage across multiple platforms for each UEFA Champions League Group Stage matchday. CBS Sports Network and CBS All Access will also air ‘The Golazo Pre-Match Show,’ beginning each matchday at 2:30 PM, ET to recap the two early games and set the stage for the remaining six matches.
CBS Sports HQ, the 24/7 streaming sports news network, will bookend CBS Sports’ UEFA Champions League live coverage, starting at 11 AM, ET and capping the day with a post-match show at 6 PM, ET.
With six games being played simultaneously during the 3-5PM ET timeslot on each matchday, it’s always difficult to pick which one game to feature on television. Having a whiparound show offers an ideal way to indulge in all of the games particularly when there are several concurrent matches that feature U.S. dominant storylines.
“A topic that comes up in every pre-production meeting are the Americans [playing in the Champions League],” said Pete Radovich, CBS Sports’ Coordinating Producer of UEFA, who spoke exclusively to World Soccer Talk. “We got this property at absolutely the perfect time in terms of the American presence in the Champions League. The first day of Champions League on matchday one is going to shatter the record for Americans playing in the Champions League if what we think happens between Juventus and Weston McKennie, and Chelsea [Christian Pulisic] and Dortmund [Gio Reyna] and Barcelona [Sergiño Dest and Konrad de la Fuente] and RB Leipzig [Tyler Adams].
“That’s something that will continue to be a theme through our coverage and something that we’re really, really excited about.”

In previous years, several broadcasters have tried whiparound shows for soccer including NBC Sports (when they had the rights to MLS), TUDN (who broadcast the popular Zona Futbol show around Champions League and Europa League games in Spanish), as well as FOX Sports who had a whiparound show that aired on the now defunct FOX Soccer Match Pass. Until now, no English-language broadcaster has done this type of whiparound show on U.S. television with the UEFA Champions League.
Asked about the strategy behind this decision, CBS Sports Digital EVP & GM Jeff Gerttula went into more detail.
“The goal of the [UEFA Champions League and Europa League] rights is to drive CBS All Access subscriptions. Everything is in CBS All Access, and that’s critical to the positioning that we have for this property which is that if you want to see every game, bonus coverage and additional features, you can subscribe. That’s the strategy in a nutshell.
“We want to be good to our consumers. We feel that [‘The Golazo Show’] will be very special. People can see everything, but our hope is that people will sign up for CBS All Access. That’s our business model around the event.”
While ‘The Golazo Show’ won’t be available for the Europa League games, the first week of 2020/21 UEFA Champions League coverage features several tantalizing games including Chelsea-Sevilla, Lazio-Dortmund, PSG-Man United, Bayern Munich-Atletico Madrid, Inter-Gladbach, Man City-Porto, Ajax-Liverpool. If just a few of those games live up to their promises, then ‘The Golazo Show’ promises to be a real treat.

Anyone else feel that the Galazo show commentating was not great? Way too much mindless chatter rather than just setting up situation and turning over to match commentators. It seemed closer to the TBS content (which was awful) rather than the CBS content from the summer (which was awesome). I know it’s a work in progress, but need to step up…

Travis, you didn’t mention what computer or OS you were using, but one thing you might try is a different browser. I was watching one stream on the big HDTV via an Apple TV and wanted the Golazo stream on a side screen, a Thunderbolt Display connected to a retina MacBook Pro on 10.14.6 in Safari 13.0.4 and I noticed the same thing you described…clicked on Golazo and it wouldn’t start, so I tested it on my aTV and it started fine, disconnected my display and tried Golazo again on just the rMBP and again it wouldn’t start. Tried a single game live feed and started right up. Reconnected the display, moved a browser window over there, retried Golazo and still nothing. Refreshed and this time got their equivalent of the spinning gears which went on for a minute or two and then it finally snapped into Golazo and was fine the rest of the afternoon. Not entirely analogous to your situation especially if you are not using Safari but I wanted you to know that it wasn’t entirely smooth for someone else using a computer. In my case I have so many extensions and content blockers running on my laptop to defeat trackers and ads that it can take some time to configure things just so so they work with a VPN, the BBC or streaming sites through browsers, etc. Best to stay calm and try to eliminate or alter one variable at a time.

So I can watch the matches that were live earlier today now that they are on demand as Match Replays but obviously I want to watch them when they are live.
It’s my Birthday next week (yes the same as Bill Gates lol) so it kinda sucks that I couldn’t watch the live matches today.
Quoting my comment earlier today in the hope that people can help me with this. Thank you all so much in advance. (and yes I cleared my History Cookies and Cache earlier when trying to view those live matches but that didn’t work. Also waiting to hear back from CBS troubleshooting.)

One thing is for sure: there is no TV or streaming coverage that will satisfy majority of US soccer fans. “The Golazo show” will need improvement and more easy interaction between presenters but, as concept by itself, is not far away from “NFL RedZone”.

Live matches on CBS All Access were working perfectly fine as recently as the Champions League playoff matches played at the end of September.

Working well so far on iOS for the actual matches — I like the menu across the top, and that you can just scroll down to choose your match.
The Golazo Show is okay so far. I feel a little sensory overload, but it is nice to be able to see some of the action from the less high-profile matches.

This Golazo show is crap. Fox Multimatch just zipped round from match to match; this monstrosity seems to have a lot of talking unless they awkwardly transition to a goal highlight.

Would be great if you were able to find out who are assigned to commentate each match.
CBS All Access app seems to struggle where to put the pre-match show, not all the match feeds gets it. One has to go to the first one on the list before switching to the match you want to watch

This is so strange. I can watch the on demand “Match Replays” just fine but can’t watch the live matches. This only started today. Played perfectly in the past and made no changes to laptop. Must be a CBS glitch and I’m sure other CBS All Access customers using laptops to access the CBS All Access website to play live matches are experiencing the same thing.

The pre-match coverage that’s exclusive to CBS All Access started at Noon ET with Jamie Carragher, Roberto Martinez, Micah Richards and Kate Abdo.

I love this idea and I credit CBS for understanding that they can add feeds like this on the streaming service (unlike ESPN+ and Peacock). I’m interested in the note about the growing contingent of Americans in the UCL and what that will mean for coverage. Maybe someday there will be a USMNT-centric feed where people who complain about pro-US coverage don’t need to watch but it’s an option for those who want it. Basically all of the Americans are going to be playing at the same time in the group stage this year.

Jeff, I asked Univision/TUDN your question. The executive said that the business model of TUDNxtra is meant to be an offering that’s available to TV and streaming providers and isn’t intended to be a service that’s available on platforms such as Roku, Amazon Prime, etc.

The games end around 4PM CT, so they’re added as soon as they can – usually within a couple of hours after the matches end.

If all one has is an extended middle finger, everyone’s business decisions are going to look like… an extended middle finger. I hope extending their middle finger in front of all of us makes these people happy… it certainly doesn’t serve as communication… we can predict how they feel about everything without their participation… or facilitate camaraderie. They should find a cozy nook where they can share pirated streams and cheat codes and commiserate that the world isn’t arranged for the aid and comfort of deadbeats.

For an example of games on tv on October 20( this just for example coverage)
that they should air 3 games on tv at 3 pm and 2 games on tv at 12:55 pm instead of both networks simulcast just UEFA Europa League on Thursday.

Chris. Where I live we Unimas, Univision, & Telemundo free and over the air. The TUDN matches are simulcast on Unimas & Univision. I have AT&T U-Basic ($19.00) + Paquete Espanol ($15) that give mes Galavisions and Tudn (the other stations for UCL). In addition I get EPL (Universo & Telemundo), ESPN Deportes (NFL, NBA, MLB, UFC, Bundesliga, Serie A, MLS), Fox Deportes (MLS, MLB), CNN Espanol (All of the TBS MLB Playoffs). I switched from FuboTV which was over $70 every month. Now I have Basic $34 + ESPN+ (Free with the Hulu/Disney+ bundle) $12.99, and Sling Latino Annual $5 / month (beIN, beIN Espanol, La Liga TV, beIN Connect) for all La Liga. I really loved FuboTV, but I am saving $25 a month from sling, and over $75 over what it would be if I got all the “English” versions with AT&T. $52 of everything is to much to pass up and I don’t even have to get CBS All Access. If I weren’t such a La Liga fan, I could drop that to $45.

TUDN is on standard cable in many markets, like CNN or CNBC for example. I don’t have to pay for a Spanish package to get it. If you have TUDN you can access TUDNxtra free of charge with your log in, that is my point. CBSSN won’t allow you to do that unless you pay for CBS all access.

instead, put both channels at the same game Unimas and TUDN. which I don’t know why both channels put simulcast together instead of 2 games on tv at 3 pm there should put 3 games on tv. (3 pm for example)

Azer: TUDN having the UCL games has been covered extensively here over the years. Nothing has changed on that front so there is nothing new to report.
CBSSN is on basic cable fir some of us, so it is just as accessible as TUDN. This is a big deal if you want to avoid another OTT subscription.

How do you access TUDN, Unitas, Galveston, and TUDNxtra free of charge? I agree with you about watching the games in Spanish. I do mind. However, when I look at options for access I can only find them through paying for a traditional cable service or something like Fubo.

Only Univision is available free of charge as it’s an over-the-air channel in most markets in the United States. All of the other channels are paid channels available through cable, satellite or paid streaming services.

Today CBS Sports gave the middle finger to Champions League & Europa League fans in the USA. Listen people, the Univision family of networks TUDN, Galavision, UniMas & it’s streaming service TUDNxtra will offer every game free of charge. This is something WST will rarely tell you.
Who cares if it’s in a different language? I don’t. CBS is worse than Turner Sports. CBS can take the Golazo Show and shove it.

It’s certainly better than what we had before, but I feel it’s a show the provides for way more ads, and the short attention span sport crowd will be happier. Nobody does soccer presentations better than any outlet overseas.

Have drifted from Champions League in recent years, too may one-sided matches and an over-abundance of league matches to choose from. This Golazo show is likely to bring me back in the fold and seeing that I now have Zona Futbol I’ll give that a try for Europa League.

@Rick: The Premier League does produce a whiparound show (Goal Rush) which is available to international broadcasters like NBC. It’s not airing a lot at the moment because there haven’t been many simultaneous games played but it does exist.
In regards to ‘Golazo’, the goals show BT Sport in the UK have aired since they’ve gained the rights demonstrates that a whiparound show can be a great product if it’s done right. However, I don’t like that it’s coming at the expense of CBS deciding not to air games live on TV. I just can’t get past how if say NBC or ESPN did something similar, this website (and many commenters) would be up-in-arms about it but because it’s CBS, there’s nothing but praise

I hope ESPN takes notice and adds something like this for all their soccer coverage on appropriate days on ESPN+. Like maybe the show, for Saturdays, focus on the Bundesliga and Serie A in the morning and in the afternoon/evening focus on MLS.

Now no need to bother with CBS All Access either, which would only really be necessary for group stage when all the matches can’t be on CBSSN. For the knockout rounds that issue is largely gone, not as many overlapping matches.
