CBS Sports today announced additional details of its multi-platform coverage of the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League Group Stages, with CBS All Access streaming all matches.
For all UEFA Champions League Group Stage match days, beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 20 and Wednesday, Oct. 21, CBS Sports’ eight hours of live coverage, including new programming across platforms, will feature an expanded roster of talent.
Nico Cantor will host “The Golazo Show,” a live whip-around program airing on CBS Sports Network and CBS All Access when six matches are being played simultaneously during the UEFA Champions League Group Stage match days. “The Golazo Show” will also feature a rotation of analysts throughout the season, including Jamie Carragher, Micah Richards, Alex Scott and Peter Schmeichel.
Cantor previously hosted TUDN’s Zona Futbol, the Spanish-language whiparound show that aired on TUDNxtra. With the addition of Cantor to CBS Sports, the popular Spanish-language analyst and commentator has now officially left TUDN.
Jules Breach will host a new UEFA Champions League highlights show with additional analysts including Julien Laurens, featuring highlights from all of the day’s matches. The show will be available on demand on CBS All Access following the matches and post-match coverage.
Also joining the studio and digital coverage teams will be Jenny Chiu, who will report on-site for all platforms.
For all UEFA Europa League Group Stage match days, beginning on Thursday, Oct. 22, CBS Sports HQ will deliver extensive surrounding coverage, including a pre-match show beginning at 12 PM, ET as well as halftime and post-match coverage, available for free on CBS Sports Digital platforms and on CBS All Access. As previously announced, CBS Sports HQ will begin CBS Sports’ eight hours of live match day coverage for the UEFA Champions League Group Stage with a pre-match show at 11 AM, ET and end with a post-match show at 6 PM, ET. CBS Sports HQ will also deliver a weekly UEFA preview show on Monday at 1 PM, ET.
Analysts DaMarcus Beasley, Jimmy Conrad, Luis Garcia, Ian Joy and Aly Wagner will lead CBS Sports HQ’s coverage, along with contributors including James Benge, Jonathan Johnson, and Christina Unkel, and anchor Poppy Miller.
CBS Sports Digital also expands its on-demand offerings with the daily soccer podcast, “¡Qué Golazo!,” hosted by Luis Miguel Echegaray. Every day, the podcast will deliver commentary, analysis, gambling insights and more, covering the latest in Europe and beyond.

Additionally, CBS Sports Network will re-air an encore match on each UEFA Champions League match day, followed by a re-air of the post-match show.

The dates for the UEFA Champions League Group Stage are: Match day 1 (Oct. 20-21), Match day 2 (Oct. 27-28), Match day 3 (Nov. 3-4), Match day 4 (Nov. 24-25), Match day 5 (Dec. 1-2) and Match day 6 (Dec. 8-9). Each match day will feature two matches at 12:55 PM, ET and six matches at 3 PM, ET. Additional details on the schedule for each UEFA Champions League Group Stage match day can be found here.

Did the Golazo Show replace the MatchDay Highlights show? If so, that would be terrible. If not, where can we find the well-produced UEFA MatchDay Highlights show? 45 minutes of high quality game summaries from the matchday.
The golazo show, coming in at almost 2 hours after a CL Night 1 is an unacceptable replacement. No one has time to play through that. Please anyone, what’s going on here? I’ve searched everywhere and can’t find any news on what’s happened here.

Totally agree that Rececca Lowe and the Robbies are the goal standard. They are the best across the patch (all sport). I’m old enough to remember when the NFL pre game was a thoughtful analysis of the upcoming game as opposed to Terry and the yuk yuk boys.
God forbid NBC lose the EPL. Even though they are trying to ding us for Peacock subscriptions, at least they throw a bone of several games on NBCSN ebery week.

Cantor is a walking/shouting disaster with his pretentious pronunciations and ill-informed opinions. When he was the actual lead commentator on a game he was a total distraction; he simply doesn’t understand the basics of the job. Give me Rebecca and the two Robbies (minus Tim Howard) every time.

Charlie… I can’t help but want to comment off your mention of the whip around host Galozo and of the CBS studio announcers and the host. Definitely a major downgrade in comparison to the NBC team of Rebecca Lowe, the two Robbies etc. it’s like I am listening to amateurs. The host interrupts one she is interviewing as he is answering one of her questions etc. Not at all impressed with the CBS team in what I’ve seen. And here we have fans here post on how they want to see NBC lose the Premier League to CBS or ESPN after the contract expires. I want quality objective broadcasting and analysis. NBC delivers it.

I gave this another shot hoping for improvement. No such luck.
It’s a terrible format and even worse show. The beauty of the game is its flow. Watching matchups and momentum. Seeing where one team exploits a weakness and how the other reacts. There is often a buildup to a goal and you can see it coming. Bouncing around destroys all this. If you can break away to see a goal somewhere else, you’re just a step away from a break for an important word from our sponsor.
And then there’s the studio announcers, Saying they’re bad is an understatement.

Watched Golazo for first, and last, time today. What an awful format, with two Studio commentators, with heavy accents, constantly interrupting and overriding the much more educated stadion announcers. They only offered very obvious, superfluous commentary in an annoyingly repetitive way (e.g “MU cannot lose today” or “Barca can lose by two, but not three” must have been said at least two dozen times!). The “whip-around” format allows for no insights into how tactics are set up or are evolving, creating a discombobulated whiplash and a complete waste of time. Better watch game summaries later; they are way more informative than this chasing the “latest goal or penalty’- hype!

Cantor is truly horrible with his stylized pronunciation and stupid comments and talking over the announcers who actually know what they are talking about. Unfortunately Payot while knowledgeable is almost impossible to understand. Why not have announcers who are understandable ?

Agree Tom. We don’t need Nico’s intros every time they switch games. Annoying as hell. Yes, do like RedZone. And he’s doing it again today. Even worse than first two weeks!
Nico also gives away that a goal is coming, ruins any suspense. He’s a disaster.

Really don’t get why they don’t go to the actual PbP announcers either. Would think CBS having the NFL would know why the Redzone is successful – they just do a very quick intro and go right to the game. They honestly could do without Nico’s intros since they have the overlay of the team logos when they switch games – we don’t need the same comments rehashed every time the game is switched. And Gus Poyet is impossible to understand – talks way too fast. Keep Jamie Carragher and Alex Scott as the analysts.

I thought it was a lot better on Wednesday. I think it would be even better if they reduce it to just Nico, additional people just adds talk that is not needed. NFL Redzone has only one person hosting.

Think the Golazo Show did a good job for being brand new. Noticed on Wednesday they weren’t as quick to inform you of another goal before showing the highlight, which is an desirable improvement. I think they go back just far enough to show how the goal was scored, which is a good balance. I would prefer a full screen of game action, but the static scoreboard is much better than a ticker. Let’s give it a chance to get better.

I’m going to go against the grain here, I like Golazo so far, I agree with JP a little less banter would improve things, but it has a lot of promise. Nico (son of Andres?) has an almost irrepressible energy and he adds much to the rest of the CBS lineup from the UK. I appreciate the accents and Latin Americanleague awareness just as I appreciated Kate Abdo’s real time multilingual translations, tonight of a Croatian (Modric) speaking in Spanish. The reason why I’m enjoying it so much, I suspect, is I’m watching and listening to Golazo on my second screen while whatever game I’m most interested in is on the main screen w/ audio muted. Back when the Premier League had games at the same time I would often watch Goal Rush on a single screen; I couldn’t watch Golazo, and just Golazo, by itself.

They need to work out a few kinks, namely too much banter, Would be better if it’s more like Serie A coverage on a Sunday morning on RAI where they show one match and cut in to show goals from other matches as they happen, then back to the original match.
Do like the ability to switch to other matches that may be more exciting or the result in doubt though, instead of being forced to show one “primary’ match.
This is great for neutrals but if I had a club I follow closely (sadly Napoli not in UCL!), wouldn’t want to watch their match day like this.

Just watch the games on dedicated channels by using CBSAA. I like the choices CBS is giving us, It’s just that that Fox executed this better with Multimatch 90.
I hope they keep this format on CBSSN but tighten up the delivery and save the commentary for halftime only.

This is terrible. I only tried to watch it because I could record it and start watching later as watching live is not compatible with being at work (why can’t the streaming services work this out?) Now I just won’t bother to watch until the knock-out rounds when hopefully this format is dropped. Not sure who the main presenter is but the linking is awful and pointless, just show a game and cut in other goals if they must.

So Golazo is really like EPL Goal Rush (one main game and highlights from others) rather than NFL RedZone or Fox Multimatch style, where there is no primary game? Is that correct?

It’s going to start off that way. But it’s going to be done on the fly. So if the first game that they start with ends up becoming a bore, and there’s another game that’s completely on fire, it’s conceivable that they could switch most of the action to that other game – and then fill viewers in with the goals from the other matches as they fly in.
