In its first full season of UEFA Champions League coverage, CBS Sports are making big strides, winning over new fans and are fortunate to be in the right place at the right time — especially considering the Round of 16 knockout phase that begins this week.
“In the first two days — Tuesday and Wednesday — we have four games, and in each one of those, we could see an American,” CBS Sports’ Coordinating Producer of UEFA Pete Radovich told World Soccer Talk. “We have Sergiño Dest (Barcelona), Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig), Gio Reyna (Dortmund) and Weston McKennie (Juventus).
“It’s always a theme for us. We’re very excited about getting into European football right when the American impact is at its highest.
“Beyond that, since we’re talking about Americans, Nico Cantor and Aaron West will be sprinkled throughout [our coverage] too. Not just with Nico on The Golazo Show, but also with opportunities for interviews with [star players]. We’re working on getting our young American voices to connect with these global iconic European football stars.”

Radovich was asked about the possibility of broadcasting games on-site in Europe this season.
“The home run would be on-site for the final,” said Radovich. “For us, to be thinking about things like that right now or in the immediate future, is not realistic. So, we’re realistically looking more at the semifinals and final as far as a timeline for finally being on-site.
“That would be fantastic especially with the final being on CBS, and giving the final that big feel that it deserves. If we’re allowed to be there, one million percent we will be there. It’s not going to be whether or not we want to make that investment or whether or not we want to go through the trouble. If they let us in the stadium, we will be there. That’s guaranteed.”
Looking ahead to Thursday’s action in the Europa League, CBS Sports will broadcast a whiparound show as well as making every game available via streaming service CBS All Access.
“Europa League is perfect for [The Golazo Show],” said Executive Vice President and General Manager at CBS Sports Digital Jeffrey Gertula. “Europa League rounds 32 and 16 are going to have The Golazo Show, and they’re going to go practically all day. We’ll have the early matches, pre-game, late matches and post-game. That’ll be available on CBS Sports Network as well as CBS All Access/Paramount+.”

Quite the disastrous start to Europa League knockout round coverage for CBS All Access today. Took 25 minutes for the streams for the two biggest games of the time slot (United and Tottenham) to appear, both online and on Roku.

I’m on the https://www.cbs.com/shows/uefa-europa-league/ site. The 12:55 pm EST games have all kicked off, but there’s no “LIVE” red dot next to either ManU nor Spurs, so we can’t watch those games! WAKE UP CBS! Both games have been shown on the Golazo show but I can’t pull up the live streams I’ve paid for.

CBS All Access is having technical issues with the Sociedad-Man United & Wolfsberger-Spurs matches.
Other viewing options include The Golazo Show (whiparound show) as well as UniMas for United game, and TUDN for Tottenham match.

Good to know since I’m saving them for later, if time allows, and instead watching Everton-City.
The thing that gets me is that Drury giving the score away feels like it’s benefitting no one. It’s not like the last day of group play where it would be relevant. Was it an attempt to get people to turn off CBSSN and instead go and subscribe to watch a different game? Strange tactics–likely dictated from a higher-up, as you said, but for no good reason.

@Nosferatu At least EPL matches are all on different times (rarely the same time). So what I do is capture the schedule ahead of time and choose to watch what I want on-demand and/or the match’s extended highlights in the order they are aired. That way.. never any spoilers.

Yesterday, Martin Tyler was doing the World Feed, so no spoilers.
But Drury was employed by CBS specifically yesterday. As Azer mentioned, Tony Jones was on the World Feed.
So, it’s doubly disappointing that a network “chose” to spoil their other content.
Utterly nonsensical.

The Porto match hasn’t been updated, so I’ll be watching Borussia first.

@cm asia, I watched the Leipzig-Liverpool game first (since I could record the other one on the DVR and not have to wait until later at night to start the replay), and Martin Tyler did not give away the score of the Barca-PSG game. Glad I watched in that order, because I totally caught all those score giveaways by Drury, something he normally doesn’t do.
I don’t like NBC’s ticker (my wife has made fun of me many times for covering the corner of the screen with a small towel to avoid being spoiled) or the way Arlo White will often talk about other scores (it’s another very “American” thing about his broadcast style, maybe at the urging of the network).. My thinking is, in this day and age, if you’re curious about other scores, they’re readily available.
Anyway, I guess I know now to always first watch the game using world feed announcers on CBS/Paramount if I want to watch the other game later.

@Azer. You’re right, but that’s not what I said. NBC chose to use the dreaded scorebug, but the World Feed commentators, before this year never discussed results of other games.
In the age of DVR and on-demand, I have no idea why any network would deliberately “spoil” their own content!

I may be in the minority here, but what is the American infatuation with Roberto Martinez as an analyst?
I find myself learning very little from him. Says nothing that hasnt been said before.
ESPN fawned over him (especially Bob Ley) and now CBS has him on the set.
So many other American TV analysts are far better than this guy

@cm asia. NBC always revealed scores on the screen of other Premier League games which started at the same time, those 10AM ET games on Saturday. People would always complain about it on WST. Tony Jones & Matthew Upson were on the world feed for FC Barcelona vs PSG.

Personally unless you are not using the internet the day of the matches then you will more than likely run into the results somewhere.
I myself started with the Barcelona PSG match every 5 or so minutes switching to Leipzig Liverpool. However at half I started watching more of the Liverpool match and after Barcelona went down 1-3 I didn’t even turn it back to that match.
When you have millions of different apps and websites like this one, you would have to do a blackout of any platform until you had watched the other matches you wanted.

Hans, a few things.
Historically, when the EPL had a normal schedule of only 4 or 5 “windows” each weekend, the IMG “world” feeds never gave scores of other games, except for the final weekend when all games kicked off at the same time time.
The reason? Many country’s cable operators showed all 380 matches, but only had the capacity to show one live at a time. So, most were on delay. IMG honored that with no spoilers.
This year is different because almost all games have staggered starts and you do hear commentators give scores of earlier games.
Obviously, in the CL, if you want to watch both games on delay, if one guy spills you’re out of luck.
I disagree about your point of guys wanting to talk about the “next round”.
Today, Drury only gave the Liverpool score to remind viewers the match was available on the other All Access channel.
Shameful… Not on Drury, but on the mooks who gave the OK.
From the broadcaster’s standpoint, there is absolutely no commercial reason to tell me the score of the other match.
If I want it, I have 8,000,000 other ways to find it.

The revealing of results is the case also in other sports competition. The only way to get halfway around it is if the games are not at the same time. Even if you wait until all games are available for replay you still get commentators to reveal scores. Don’t think there is an answer to this as the guys want to talk about potential teams for the next round.

Can anyone give a logical reason why Peter Drury was given permission to spill / spoil the score of the Liverpool match Tuesday?
Should have watched Liverpool first as CBS used the World Feed.

Normally the World Feed guys do not spill.
Wednesday, for Sevilla, CBS is using Kevin Keatings and the World Feed.
For Porto, there is no commentator listing as of 11:30 Pacific time.
Drury is calling the Everton Premier League match.
C’mon CBS. Figure this out.
We know how to find the game we’re not watching.

Picture quality was fine for me. I watched Liverpool on CBS AA and psg on cns an via YTTV. the latter so I could pause and rewind.
I have to say I am sickened they CBSAA, like Peacock and unlike ESPN+, has neither pause nor rewind capability.
Neither NBC nor CBS can be considered a major streaming source with such inadequate capabilities in 2021.

My experience has been that the stream quality is best using the app on your preferred device. For me that is Chromecast with Google TV and the streams of the 3 different services are always better on the app than in the browser on my TV.

Odd I’m watching through a Roku on a 65″ LG Oled with internet of 150 mbps and I’m having no issues at all.
Except for them giving Liverpool scores.

CBS Sports Network coverage of the Barcelona vs PSG game is awful. It is so bad CBS has been apologising on air as it keeps cutting off. They were able to show just 10 minutes or so of the first half. The halftime studio analysis was off too.

For all the complaints we’ve heard over Peacock’s interface etc, i have to now chime in regarding the stream quality of CBS All Access. It is NOT impressive at all. It is not a clean 720p much less 1080p and is blurred with camera movements. I found the CBS Sports network channel feed off YouTube TV live stream to be totally superior in quality.
Surely CBS All Access can do better than this.
