FOX Sports has been out of the business of acquiring soccer rights for a considerable amount of time after losing the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and Bundesliga in recent years, but the American broadcasting network is back now after the headline news today proclaiming FOX Sports acquires Copa America rights through 2026.
FOX Sports’ six-year agreement with CONMEBOL kicks off this June with the English-language rights to the CONMEBOL Copa América 2021 event. Additional rights picked up by FOX Sports as part of the deal include the 2022 Women’s Copa America, CONMEBOL qualifiers for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, 2024 CONMEBOL men’s and women’s Olympic qualifiers, 2024 Copa America and Women’s Copa America, and 2026 Women’s Copa America.
“CONMEBOL is the perfect addition to FOX Sports’ elite slate of international soccer properties,” Mark Silverman, President, National Networks, FOX Sports said. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to grow the game in the U.S. by showcasing some of the best men’s and women’s teams and players from around the world as they suit up for top international competition.”

While it’s good news that FOX Sports is back when it comes to international soccer, the valuation of the rights to Copa America aren’t considerable for the English-language audience because the majority of viewers interested in watching the nations from South America will view the games on Spanish-language television. Where FOX Sports can benefit though is by using Copa America to promote their coverage of the Gold Cup in July. But even then, Univision has the stronger pull with the exclusive Spanish-language rights to not only Copa America and the Gold Cup this summer, but also Euro 2020.
This summer’s Copa America tournament will be hosted by Brazil. The teams competing are Brazil (title holders), Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.

I was kind of disappointed that CBS/Paramount+ did not put in a bid, given the fact that they have the rights to two of South America’s biggest leagues the Brazilian Serie A and the Argentinean Primera Division. Having the Copa America would have greatly enhanced CBS’s ability to broadcast international tournaments (which would help in them becoming a player in the next World Cup rights cycle) as well as potentially grown the fan base for the two leagues I mentioned above.
When it comes to Fox, I see them getting the English language rights as a bad thing because I fear that they will broadcast the tournament in the cheapest way possible by not hiring commentators and relying entirely on the English language global feed provided by CONMEBOL. Remember that Fox is still recovering from massive budget cuts that have greatly reduced staff in recent years. I also see them not putting much effort into the Copa America because they will be so focused on the Gold Cup because the US and Mexico. The conflicts that @Karl pointed out with other sports Fox covers along with MLS certainly doesn’t help the situation. ESPN/ESPN+, FuboTV or even Turner would have been better homes for the Copa America on the English language side especially Fubo and Turner because there would be fewer conflicts with other events.

Is FoxSoccerPlus still a thing if so then that is where everything will be. Only thing on FS1/2 is something dealing with the USA teams.

Looking through Fox’s already announced commitments with MLB, MLS, Nascar, and PBA bowling, these are definite conflicts with Copa America games, with potentially other properties I’m not thinking of:

Sunday, June 13 (5pm & 8pm)- Nascar on FS1 at 6pm & 8pm
Friday, June 18 (7pm & 10pm)- Nascar on FS1 at 8pm
Sunday, June 20 (4pm)- PBA on FS1 at 2pm (I’m unsure how long PBA broadcasts typically go)
2 Quarterfinals Sat, July 3 (6pm & 9pm)- likely 6pm on FS2, could see 9PM game on FS1
MLB on FS1 at 4pm
MLB on Fox at 7:15pm

@James Williams. It would almost certainly be FS1 and FS2. The weekly Primetime programming is huge for Fox. They are already going to be loosing two weeks for the Name finals that ends right before it starts. I can’t see them giving up more time. I can see OTT Fox on the weekend nights. During the day they have MLB….but sometimes when there is Nascaar they will shift that to FS1. The advantage of this that they games will be played the Central, Eastern, and Atlantic times zones so that is much closer to our time and they will problem be able to to Afternoon games. The question is what will happen with the MLS Primetime Saturday Night Game on Fox. That is the only conflict that I can see.

Can’t imagine CONMEBOL is getting much of a fee here but if they were looking for better exposure than beIN on the English side, Fox is probably the way to go (assuming you’ll see the bulk of games on FS1) as ESPN and CBS aren’t making room in the evenings for Copa America outside of ESPN+/Paramount+.
