Women’s Super League moves to CBS Sports

Women's Super League moves to CBS

CBS Sports continue to gobble up as many soccer rights as possible. In its latest acquisition, the U.S. rights to Women’s Super League moves to CBS Sports and Paramount+ beginning in the summer of 2022.

The terms of the deal include CBS Sports now becoming the exclusive U.S. English-language rights holder of the Women’s Super League, one of Europe’s top women’s soccer leagues. Matches will appear across Paramount+ and CBS Sports Network, with coverage during the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 WSL seasons.

Across the two seasons, CBS Sports will deliver 57 Women’s Super League matches. CBS Sports Network will air a select number of those matches exclusively, with the majority streaming on Paramount+.

CBS Sports’ Executive VP Programming Dan Weinberg had this to say about the announcement:

“The FA Women’s Super League features some of the most recognizable soccer brands in the world, and is an excellent addition to CBS Sports’ premium soccer portfolio. We look forward to bringing the exciting action of the BFAWSL to fans across Paramount+ and CBS Sports Network. With our wide array of soccer properties and robust year-round match coverage, we are a must-have for soccer fans.”

“We are delighted to be partnering with CBS Sports for the next two seasons and are looking forward to the coverage they beam to households across the United States,” said James Ralley, the Football Association’s head of broadcast and media rights. “Their delivery of soccer, whether men’s or women’s, is of the highest quality, and their reputation within the industry is one that is growing rapidly. We look forward to working with them over the next few years.”

Women’s Super League: Viewing options

With the news that the Women’s Super League moves to CBS Sports, what does that mean for the current rights-holders? Up until now, games from the Women’s Super League were available for free from the league’s official website. It is understood that will continue as well as games being available from current rights-holders ATA Football and NBC Sports. Under its current deal, more than 100 games were shown this season.

The Women’s Super League features 12 clubs, including popular teams such as Manchester United and players including Arsenal and U.S. Women’s National midfielder Tobin Heath and Chelsea star forward Sam Kerr, the all-time leading goalscorer in NWSL history.

Nosferatu, I couldn’t agree with you more regarding the replays! I completely missed one of the Concacaf qualifiers, US v Panama, which was originally broadcast around 5pm. When I tried to catch the replay on P+ I had no luck as they were still taling about the game Live, over an hour later, on the P+ stream which delayed the replay even further. I ended up missing it cause I needed to go to bed to get up earl for work the next day.

I really hope Paramount+ can start to get replays of games up more expediently. It’s nearly a deal-breaker for their Champions and Europa League competitions, what with those being on weekdays. And if they get the Premier League and still leave fans waiting 3-6 hours for replays to become available for games that weren’t on TV and able to record, I have a feeling they’ll be losing a lot of business.

I watch a lot of Arsenal’s WSL games that NBC Sports streams, and they’ve done a consistently good job there, just like with the men’s games, of getting replays up right away. With the times of these games, that’s very important.

Thank you for the update. CBS/Paramount+ are doing very nice work with NWSL coverage. Hopefully, they maintain that success with FA WSL. There seem to be a lot of entities and moving pieces as far as watching European women’s soccer. Perhaps that will shake out over the next year or two.

Suppose there is a split between the two media entities:

How does one determine the first choice match? Is it defined by the time slot or the matchup? How would the Saturday 10am matches be handled? Will one be required to have more than one streaming service to obtain all matches?
If the rights are split, it would take far more time to make sense of the deal as there are too many variables within the split concept.

I think it’s looking more and more like the rights package will be shared by 2 or someone other than Comcast will keep it all to themselves. See ESPN letting go of UEFA and wanting to win the streaming wars and CBS being aggressive with their acquisitions of soccer properties.

Count me as one hoping they stay with NBC, or rather, stay off ESPN and CBS. Don’t need them using EPL as justification to increase the price, and then make their current leagues second fiddle to EPL in their coverage.

Hope NBC keeps all the rights.
ESPN / CBS / FOX Will all screw up the coverage with their own commentators on the big games that will be based stateside .
FOX : Remember Gus Johnson ??????
ESPN : Alejandro Moreno etc And the awesome (Cough , Cough) Tayler Twellman.
CBS : Who the hell knows who they will have .

This week is THE week, right? Given the deadline is today, should we expect some news or update to come out this week regarding PL rights?

Rooting for a full NBC renewal or CBS/ESPN split over on this end!

I hope NBC keeps the rights to the Premier League.. it’s nice to see every game on tv or Peacock. I don’t want to have to take out a bank loan to watch it next season.

@locofooty I totally agree, I think that because there are 4 packages, It will go to CBS, ESPN, and Fox. I don’t know who the 4th broadcaster would be.

What does this mean for the EPL TV Rights? Did CBS acquire that too? I hope it’s ESPN or Fox who gets the EPL, and I hope NBC loses the EPL.

Hi UnitedFan, the FA (Football Association) rights are handled by a completely different organization, so this doesn’t have anything to do with the Premier League rights.
