Sometimes a fixture ends and we think to ourselves, ‘man, that might be the best soccer game I have ever watched.‘
Of course, there are a lot of factors that come into play. For example, Barcelona fans, such as myself, could say La Remontada against PSG takes the top prize. PSG Fans certainly try to wipe that day from their memory. Similarly, Barcelona fans try to forget May 7, 2019. That day lives in Liverpool lore for the rest of time as the unimaginable happened.
Some fans love goals. The recent seven-goal thriller between Manchester City and Real Madrid might not be in that discussion for greatest game, but it captivated millions.
Then, of course, there is drama. Whether it be a World Cup, European Championship, Champions League, final day of a league season or a playoff final, games are simply better when there is more on the line.
The ‘Game of the Century‘ in 1970 between Italy and West Germany sent the Italians to the World Cup Final with a 4-3 final. Manchester United’s two late, late goals against Bayern Munich clinched England’s first treble-winning season.
What is the best soccer game you have watched?

Italy v Nigeria in the ’94 World Cup. Famous for Baggio’s tying goal at just about stoppage time. Mentioned in the ‘How you became a soccer fan’ article, the sudden shift in emotions from dejection to elation.

Most enjoyable?
Italy v Germany in the 2006 World Cup. Was on the 4th of July, so was the focal point of BBQ experience with extended family. Buffon kept them in it before Italy sealed the deal late into extra time.

Best match
Lazio v Inter on the final Serie A match day of 2018. Last Champions League spot was on the line, Lazio just needed a draw to hold on to their advantage. Entire match had the feel of a Cup final, so much intensity. Lazio looking good until de Vrij’s late penalty allowed Inter to level it before taking the lead (and that UCL spot) just a few minutes later. de Vrij’s transfer to Inter already common knowledge so giving him a start in this match was already being questioned long before that moment.

Best El Clasico
April 2017. This match was going on at the same time my NHL team was facing an elimination playoff game, but could not take my eyes of this match for the most part and the NHL game was put on “check in quick during deadball situations” status . Even without the goal from Messi at the death to win it this match would’ve been ranked highly. So much drama throughout, just a fantastic match start to finish (and I was pulling for Madrid as well).

Best MLS?
Don’t remember the exact year, likely mid 2000’s. It was a 2nd leg playoff match between DC United and New England. An absolute goal fest and very entertaining

Liverpool’s improbable 4–0 comeback win against Barcelona in a return leg fixture at Anfield in the 18/19 Champions League semifinal. I didn’t follow European football at all until the 14/15 season and chose LFC to follow somewhat randomly. It continues to be a rather heady trip.

2nd leg of Liverpool vs Chelsea in the 2009 UCL Quarterfinals. That was an epic game.
The 2nd leg of Barcelona vs Chelsea in 2005 in the UCL round of 16 also comes to mind.
At the international level…not sure…maybe Netherlands vs Portugal at the 2006 World Cup? Or Italy vs France in the final. The 2014 demolition of Brazil by the hands of Germany is a contender just for the pure shock of the result. A couple of 2002 World Cup matches come to mind, like South Korea’s upset over Italy.

Leeds down 2-0 first half. Second half our goalkeeper goes off injured and Jimenez (wolves ) gets a red.
63rd minute Harrison scores for Leeds, 66th Rodrigo and 90+1
Ayling scores !!! We thought we were doomed after the first half.

Live? Bulgaria v. Germany European qualifier, 1995 in Sofia, 0:2 to 3:2 for Bulgaria, goals from Stoichkov(2 penalties) and Kostadinov. Lots of A Listers on that field, Balakov, Trifon Ivanov, Klinsman, Hessler, Sammer, Andy Moeller to name a few.
Germans ended up winning the Euros the following summer.
Packed Vassil Levski stadium, 70,000 in attendance, a cousin somehow found front and center tickets. I was 16 years old, can’t forget this one.
On TV? Too many to count, I remember getting up in the middle of the night 1986 to watch the WC final Germany v Argentina, Italian misery in 1990, that Cameroon England game. Bulgarian and Baggio heroics in 1994…
Some Champions League doosies through the years as well, mostly involving Liverpool.

Liverpool v Barcelona 4-0. 2019 Champions League. From a competitive standpoint it wasn’t much, as the great “mes que un club” were totally outclassed. But just watching the crowd going from vaguely hopeful to rabid was something. Watching the arrogance and disbelief pour out of Barcelona as the goals rained down was priceless.

I could probably think of some blockbuster games between big teams over the years that others have witnessed, but for the sake of originality, I’m going to go with one I saw and reported on live last year in the USL Championship, a Copa Tejas match between El Paso Locomotive FC and San Antonio FC.
El Paso was one of the best teams in the league and on the verge of clinching Copa Tejas, a trophy contested by all the Texan teams in the league in their head-to-head matches (there’s now also an MLS version, but the original took place in USLC). They just needed a draw at home against SAFC to wrap it up, and they were unbeaten at home in over a year so it seemed very likely.
El Paso had a slow start though and SAFC was clinical in front of goal, holding a 2-0 lead at halftime which would prevent El Paso from a clinching result in front of its fans that night.
In the second half, El Paso switched on and turned the 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead, on track to win the trophy as it was expected to, but there was one small twist left in the match as a long, lofted pass from SAFC center back Mitchell Taintor found the head of Kortne Ford in the box for a diving header to equalize 3-3 in the dying moments. El Paso still got to claim Copa Tejas while SAFC probably had mixed feelings about starting so well then letting the lead slip before snatching a point.
It was such a wild match, especially with the added Copa Tejas storyline. As a reporter and knowing El Paso had a solid defensive record, I was also trying to look up how often and how recently the Locos had conceded two and then three goals at home (it had been over two years and one of the two previous occasions was SAFC’s doing as well).

About 6 or 7 years ago. US Open Cup. The newish NYCFC came out to a 50 year old tiny Hofstra stadium to play the Cosmos. Cosmos won in penalty kicks after battling then to a 4-4 tie. Great crowd. NY derby. And showed up the mls. Raul wouldn’t play because it was on turf. But that was the closest I think I ever came in America to watching that kind of derby in a cup match

I’ve watched 100’s of memorable football games over the years but it’s probably the Man City-QPR Title clincher on the final day. In 2012. I’ve been a Man City supporter since 1996 and watching them win in such dramatic fashion especially at the expense of the ever volatile Joey Barton was amazing
