Fans of higher resolution TV will have the opportunity to watch the World Cup in 4K. This only applies to viewers that have the hardware and TV compatible with 4K broadcasts. However, if that applies, fans can watch the entire tournament in the upgraded quality.
4K delivers a display resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels or 8.3 megapixels in total. Essentially, this makes for a clearer and sharper TV image for viewers.
Here in the United States, FOX Sports currently holds the English-language broadcast rights for the 2022 World Cup. This means that all 64 games of the competition will air either on local FOX stations or FS1, the company’s main sports channel. Every match of the tournament will be available in 4K.
Watch the World Cup in 4K
Viewers can gain access to FS1 via traditional cable and satellite companies, or through streaming platforms. Services such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, and Sling (Blue) all currently offer FS1 in their streaming lineup; however fuboTV could be the best option for many soccer fans. FuboTV also has channels that carry the Premier League, Ligue 1, Super Lig, Euros, Gold Cup, and more. Plans for the streaming service start at $69.99 per month.
Along with live matches on FOX and FS1, the company’s over-the-top content platform Tubi will also stream all 64 World Cup games on-demand. Games on Tubi will be available in 4K as well.
For those viewers that have 8K televisions here in the United States, unfortunately this format will not be an option for these World Cup games. Instead, the stream quality will be broadcasted in 4K quality.

The World Cup is set to start on November 20th, as hosts Qatar face Ecuador. The USMNT begin their tournament with a tough matchup against Wales the following day. Along with Wales, the USMNT will also play powerhouse England and Iran in the group stage of the tournament.

The post does not include any information about Peacock’s Spanish language transmissions of the World Cup. Will Peacock stream World Cup matches in 4K?

Chris – Is this dependent on the cable company/provider? Will Comcast make available the 4k feed for Fox and FS1? I ask because NBC produces 4k EPL matches but Comcast doesn’t make them available.

With the Premier League 4K broadcasts, those are on a special 4K channel that not all cable/satellite/streaming providers make available.
So in the case of FOX broadcasting the World Cup in 4K, you should be able to watch it in 4K. If you can watch 4K broadcasts from other sports on FOX such as baseball or football, then you’ll be able to watch the World Cup in 4K later this year.

One consideration (maybe WST knows for World Cup) is that FOX may make 4k available on streaming app even if they do not transmit 4k on all linear platforms. Pay TV subscribers typically can access FOX Sports app at no added charge, but only some internet TV devices can handle the 4k stream from FOX Sports app. Very much YMMV

For example, this past weekend’s Alabama-Texas game was transmitted in 4k on the FOX Sports app. A select number of linear providers offered the 4k feed, though many others (including, I believe, all OTA) transmitted an HD simulcast

If anyone wants to test their setup, on September 17 FOX will broadcast Oklahoma-Nebraska (noon ET) and BYU-Oregon (3:30 ET) in 4k HDR. Note that these are upscaled 1080p transmitted as 4k rather than native 4k (I assume World Cup will be native 4k). But it should let you test if your apps or channels or etc. are FOX 4k ready

If you own a 4k TV, several things all need to be true for you to watch an OTA 4k broadcast (native 2160p OTA as opposed to 720p or 1080i upscaled by your TV algorithm):

1. The affiliate in your area needs to have upgraded to ATSC 3.0 (marketed as NextGen TV) – google “nextgen ota by city usa” and click links to research your local FOX
2. If upgraded, the affiliate needs to transmit the program in 4k (only your affiliate would know, though WST often shares broad industry plans on topics like this)
3. Either your TV must be ATSC 3.0 enabled (somewhat rare even on 4k TVs) or you need to purchase a 4k digital tuner to go between your antenna and TV

Many FOX affiliates have not upgraded to ATSC 3.0, so it is 0% to be able to watch native 2160p (4k) FOX OTA in much of the US. But some have upgraded; perhaps you are fortunate to live in one of those areas

Even with a FOX affiliate supporting ATSC 3.0 in a particular market, the chances of 4K resolution being broadcasted in the States OTA for WC ’22 is slim-to-none. Unfortunately, the infrastructure to do this via local OTA just isn’t there yet. This isn’t because ATSC 3.0 nor the local affiliate is incapable of hypothetically supporting this. It is because there are currently no ‘FOX-only’ ATSC 3.0 broadcast affiliates.
If a market has access to ATSC 3.0 services, the towers serving these services are either ‘lighthouse’ deployments, or situations where one large broadcaster owns multiple major OTA affiliates. A good example of this is the Raleigh-Durham market. There is one lighthouse ATSC 3.0 tower transmitting ABC/CBS/CW/myTV/Univision. The other tower transmits affiliates owned by Capitol Broadcasting (FOX+NBC) plus PBS. In order to properly transmit in 4K over ATSC 3.0, Capitol would have to significantly alter the encoding priority and bandwidth allocation for the local FOX channel, which would not be something that CBS or PBS would be very happy with.
In essence, doing this isn’t worth the fight – at least for the first few rounds. However, if the US somehow begins performing miracles and can make it to the latter stages of the Cup (wouldn’t count on it given our recent form), then there’s a slight chance the public interest and media exposure could make this effort worthwhile. Though I wouldn’t bet on it, as the impetuous still won’t really be there, since the FOX Sports and Tubi apps should offer an avenue to watch in 4K regardless.
