ESPN+ has a hefty number of soccer games coming in June.
For most of the world, the summer months are time for friendlies and international competitions. Of course, with the World Cup scheduled for November of this year rather than the summer, there might seem like even more of a void than usual. However, this is the first time in two years that the summer is open to frequent international travel. Therefore, there are club friendlies and international competitions going on again.
That being said, the international soccer schedule is jumbled up when it comes to providers and channels carrying certain teams or leagues. You can access ESPN+ for $6.99 per month. Or, you could opt for the Disney Bundle, which is $13.99 per month. This provides access to ESPN+, Disney+ and Hulu.

Here are some of the soccer games coming to ESPN+ in June:
International soccer
USMNT vs. Grenada – CONCACAF Nations League – Friday, June 10, 10 p.m. ET
Looking at the notable games featuring on the streaming service this month, the highlight comes from the USMNT. As the United States looks to defend its CONCACAF Nations League title, it opens the competition against Grenada on June 10. Again, that game is exclusive to ESPN+ in the United States.
Girona vs. Tenerife – LaLiga Playoff Final First Leg – Saturday, June 11, 3 p.m. ET
ESPN’s acquisition of LaLiga prior to the 2021/22 season, the focus rested on Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla. In the United States, the promotion and relegation battle from the second tier does not take center stage. However, the drama and intrigue of promotion for Spanish sides is always something to follow. Over two legs, Tenerife and Girona will play for promotion into Spain’s top flight.
Tenerife vs. Girona – LaLiga Playoff Final Second Leg – Sunday, June 19, 3 p.m. ET
The second leg of this tie comes a full nine days after the first. This is based on aggregate score. Away goals rule is in effect for this playoff, with extra time and penalties also in effect when tied.
Domestic Leagues
There are three leagues that feature from the United States on the ESPN+ soccer schedule in June. Major League Soccer, USL Championship and USL League One all have soccer games on ESPN+ in June. Here are some of the highlights from that schedule.
Miami FC vs. Tampa Bay Rowdies – USL Championship – Saturday, June 11, 7 p.m. ET
This is becoming something of a rivalry in the development of soccer in Florida. Both clubs may take a backseat to their MLS counterparts in terms of popularity. However, battles in the US Open Cup and now a continued rivalry in the USL Championship reignited this Florida derby.
Detroit City FC vs. Sacramento Republic FC – USL League One – Saturday, June 11, 7:30 p.m. ET
If there is one team to keep an eye on from USL League One, it is Detroit City FC. The club has one of the strongest followings from an American club outside of Major League Soccer. Plus, the club can clearly put some success together. While out of the US Open Cup, Detroit City eliminated MLS side Columbus Crew in the third round.
NYCFC vs. Colorado Rapids – MLS – Sunday, June 19, 5 p.m. ET
Looking at the 2021 season, these two clearly had success. NYCFC lifted its first MLS Cup, while Colorado finished top of the Western Conference. Playoff success did not come, but that may not be the case this year. Colorado is off to a slower start approaching the halfway point in the season. Meanwhile, NYCFC tops the Eastern Conference.
Charlotte FC vs. Austin FC – MLS – Thursday, June 30, 7 p.m. ET
The two newest sides in Major League Soccer have passionate fan bases. Plus, they both exhibit some success at the turn of the season. Playoffs are well in the discussion for both teams, giving this game an extra edge from Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
US Open Cup
Finally, one major competition airing on ESPN+ in June is the US Open Cup. This tournament includes all clubs in the United States from Major League Soccer to amateur teams affiliated with US Soccer.
Currently, the competition is in the quarterfinals.
LA Galaxy vs. Sacramento Republic FC – Tuesday, June 21, 10:30 p.m. ET
Sacramento is the only USL Championship side remaining in the competition. It travels to the two-time winners of the competition in the quarterfinals.
New York Red Bulls vs. NYCFC – Wednesday, June 22, 8 p.m. ET
A New York derby with a chance to reach the semifinals of the US Open Cup. Both clubs seek their first Lamar Hunt US Open Cup trophy win.
Sporting KC vs. Union Omaha – Wednesday, June 22, 8:30 p.m. ET
Another underdog story, Union Omaha is the lowest team remaining in the American soccer pyramid. The USL League One side takes on the most successful side in the tournament’s history that is still active and operational.
Orlando City vs. Nashville SC – Wednesday, June 29, 7 p.m. ET
Another all-MLS battle from relatively new clubs. The winner is the last club to qualify for the semifinals of the tournament.

Detroit City vs Sacramento is in USL League One?
And the recap of Rapids/NYCFC is quite confusing….saying the Rapids had a great 2021 regular season and then saying they didn’t have success in the playoffs “but” that may not happen again. Because they’re off to a slow start, what might not happen again…a great regular season or not finding any success in the playoffs?

Very slim pickings from ESPN on the soccer side. Vix is the king of the summer, with Paramount able to keep some Concacaf Nations League plus their Argentinian and Brazilian leagues.
Peacock and ESPN need to work on their summer offerings, Feels like I’m not the only one subscribing less months to ESPN+ this year compared to last year.

Notice they had MLS matches on ABC both days this weekend. Was that set when the schedule came out, or on the fly?
If on the fly, maybe a sign ESPN isn’t retaining MLS and they’re being passive aggressive showing what “could have been” to them on the way out. Similar to how Serie A got more coverage on ESPN/ABC when they were on the way out.

Whose bright idea was it at ESPN to make the USA/Grenada match streaming-only?
I “checked my local listings” and saw that, from 9-11pm ET on game night, BOTH ESPN & ESPNEWS have blocked out time to show the same Game 3 in a best-of-3 Final of the Women’s College World Series (softball) tournament.
First, there might not even BE a Game 3, and, even if there is, why must two (2) networks air it such that neither are airing USA/Grenada which kicks off at 10pm ET?
This is an unforced error by ESPN, and totally unnecessary at that (or is this a “who cares?” on their part since Turner gains the USMNT rights in 2023?)
Whatever it is, I hope they change their minds soon and offer the game on an actual TV channel.

ESPN have put a big effort behind NCAA women’s softball for the past few years. The best-of-3 WCWS includes a main feed (ESPN or ESPN2), a Texas feed (LHN), and an alternate feed (ESPNU or ESPNEWS)
.
The final is a significant mismatch and the favorite won game one 16-1. If the favorite win again tonight, ESPN will need to modify the Friday schedule. If the underdog pull the upset tonight, ESPN should draw very good numbers for a Friday evening, winner-take-all, Red River Rivalry

Thanks, dave, though prioritizing such a multicast (if a 3rd game were to happen…and it wasn’t as the series ended before tonight’s match took place, but ESPN STILL didn’t air the match) over airing the Nations League match on even one (1) of their channels, says a lot to me about ESPN’s thought about US Soccer in 2022.
Perhaps it’s apocrypha to some degree, but ESPN has a knack for behaving as if the sports they air are more “important” than those that they don’t — case in point, the NHL whose rights they JUST got starting last Fall.

I don’t complain about services not getting rights. Each one takes care of their ROI. But once they get it, it should be accessible and have a decent presentation.
They have an obligation to fans.
I canceled ESPN+ in summer, but will definitely be back in Aug. They still have by far the best features (multicast, full DVR, etc)

@Bram, it is funny how ESPN “discovered” NHL. Supposedly, one reason B1G and ESPN agreed the previous B-package deal was B1G concern that no ESPN might mean light B1G promotion. Though arguably shrinking, ESPN can still drive narratives for English-language sports in the US. Big thumb on the scale based on their priorities

I watched USMNT-Grenada in Spanish and TUDN did their best with the mismatch. Out of morbid curiosity, what did ESPN show in place of WCWS game 3? Alternate NBA Finals feed or hype program? 30 for 30? Tough few weeks to get visibility on ESPN linear

I don’t remember the specific programming that aired on ESPNU at the time, given that the WCWS had ended, but I THINK that, yes, it was a 30-for-30 or something similar.

My ESPN+ expires Friday and I see no need to resubscribe till the English soccer clubs crank up again.

I am so grateful for the VIX service for giving me the Nations League. Saving big bucks as I would of had to do Fubo TV.

Vix is great. If I were Duolingo or Babbel, I’d pay for commercial insertions during the FuboTV streams. Something like this – “Are you tired of paying almost $100 to watch some games with debatable relevance, when everyone else is watching them for free in Spanish?…YadaYadaYada… Learn another language today, and learn how to enjoy soccer without the sobriety of a funeral, and commenters that think that they are providing analysis that will be used to land people on the moon”.
Besides Sportswashing, the main reason I dislike EPL are the narrators + commentators. It is just so dull and boring. They take it, and themselves, way too serious, and the tone is horrible. It is hard to even tell when someone scored if you are also getting things done in the house at the moment.

@Ra, which Brazilian Serie A match do you recommend tonight? No NHL playoff game and want something other than the NBA. On Sunday tried watching Palmeiras/Atletico MG, seeing was top of the table match, was underwhelmed and gave up half hour in. Leaning towards Santos/Inter

@JP. Yes, Palmeiras can be very boring to watch sometimes. The coach, Abel Ferreira, is a Mourinho.
For tonight – If Flamengo is losing, I’d watch them. They are under intense pressure from fans and the media. The coach is to be sacked any day now. Bragantino is the opposite, no pressure at all – a team without history or fans.
If they are not losing, I’d go with Santos-Inter or Fluminense-Atletico MG.
Tomorrow I’ll watch Sao Paulo-Coritiba, but Fortaleza-Goias should be a better game.

It is funny that 2 years ago, the options to watch the Brasil Serie A were very limited.
Today, I can find it in all games in any service I stumble on – Paramount+ (EN/PT), VIX (ES/PT), Fanatiz (PT), SlingWorld (PT).
It is great to have options – I hope Libertadores will split the EN/ES/PT rights between 3 different providers.

Yes it’s crazy how accessible South American football is now. Before it was buried on GolTV if anyone had it carried them at all, or maybe Fox Soccer Plus. Difficult to follow for a newbie like myself, not knowing the history, etc. But Copa Libertadores for a couple years on beIN helped. A lot of the team names are now more familiar. Good to have in the summer months when no big International tournaments and before Europe starts again in August.

@Ra, in addition to those matches Wednesday, also watches some or all of Atletico MG/Santos on Saturday…Sao Paulo/America MG, Cortiba/Palmeiras, and Fortaleza/Athetico Paranaense on Sunday. Most of them entertaining. By the looks of it, no clue how Fortaleza is bottom of the table, they seemed to play very well. In the last 16 of the Libertadores so maybe a fluke of form/scheduling early in the year??

Only downside on the English language commentary is how low they have the crowd noise. They need to work on getting that mix right, sometimes for the commentary itself color is higher than the play by play or vice versa.
And for those who hate spoilers, you’d hate this league because they have score alerts for other matches going on.

I agree – the English commentary has a lot of room for improvement, on all fronts. I usually watch it in Portuguese on Paramount+.
Did you watch Fluminense-Atletico MG? That was a great game. What I like about this league is that they have games almost every day. The only exception this week will be Fri. They played Sat-Thu. It is very helpful at this time of the year because of limited EU options.
It is one of the most unpredictable leagues. I agree, it is amazing that Fortaleza is in the bottom of the table. On the other hand, Corinthians is playing a mediocre soccer and is #2, while Sao Paulo is #3 playing great 1st halves and abysmal 2nd. They play so many matches, and the calendar is so tight this year because of the WC, that all bets are off for this year.

Didn’t watch the Fluminense/Atletico MG match last week, was on Santos I think. But saw the goals flying in the updates and caught the highlights. Agreed it’s nice to have matches during the Euro break. Taking a quick liking to the league, didn’t give it much chance last year as I got the service in August. Definitely better than the Argentinian league, more free flowing where Argentina seems almost MLS like in quality whenever I’ve sampled.

Yet another astute comment from you, MarkB, you must remain for many a fount of knowledge. However, some of us less knowledgeable here appreciate the thoughts of others, we don’t mind if our perceptions are challenged, we wonder if other soccer fans feel the same way we do about the value of a particular subscription. It was mentioned on another thread by dave, smartly I think, that there’s an ebb and flow to the value of particular subscriptions that we all have to decide for ourselves. I think the value of ESPN+ has ebbed big time and I’m glad to find I’m not alone. Even Ra has dumped it and we agree on basically nothing.

Well it was much better in early 2021 when they had UEFA int’s and Serie A. They are gone now and replaced with La Liga which I have no interest in.
So yes E+ took a step down from 2020/21 to 2021/22. Do I think it will dip more in 2022/23 I’m afraid yes. Already has with Uefa Int’ls gone

I hope ESPN gets back into international Football ASAP. Fox needs to terminate the FIFA and UEFA contracts and have ESPN pick up the rights. FuboTV and UEFA do NOT go together. I can’t believe FS Plus still exists.

I’m still OK with ESPN+. I enjoy Bundesliga and the top Liga teams, as well as EFL Championship and FA Cup. The odd Dutch and Belgian match makes a nice change. Since I’m also a baseball fan and like off-the-radar stuff like AfriBasket, Plus and retains decent value for me.

ESPN plus soccer content is so thin now they don’t have UEFA internationals anymore. It makes me wonder if when the domestic leagues start up again that they are more likely to lose content than gain any. Kartek said at the end of the last podcast that ESPN has a history of having heavy involvement in soccer vs less involvment and in 2022 terms he thinks they are reducing right now.
Personally I think ESPN can find cheap content still to fill their schedule list with. I’d recommend Italy Serie B.
