Liverpool sign Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus

Arthur Melo Liverpool

As part of deadline day, Liverpool completed the signing of Arthur Melo on a one-year loan. Liverpool acquires the Brazilian midfielder from Juventus. Arthur’s tenure also includes a stint at Barcelona, bringing plenty of experience from top European leagues and the UEFA Champions League to Anfield.

Arthur played 135 combined matches with Barca and Juve, including 26 Champions League appearances. Although not much of a scoring threat, Arthur excels with the ball at his feet. He previously ranked highly in pass attempts, completed passes and progressive passes.

Arthur first came over to Europe after Barcelona purchased the midfielder at the age of 21. Back then, the Catalan club shelled out just over $34 million for his midfield ability. Juventus then snagged his services in a swap deal with Miralem Pjanić going the other way.

Liverpool brings over Arthur Melo to help midfield

There is no secret the Reds have been in the market for a new midfielder over the last few weeks.  Manager Jurgen Klopp has dealt with thin numbers in central midfield due to the absences of Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Curtis Jones.

Klopp’s midfield headache worsened Wednesday night. Club captain Jordan Henderson suffered an injury during Liverpool’s 2-1 comeback victory against Newcastle United.

The short-term loan makes sense for Liverpool, as although they have injuries, these players are still under contract. Klopp reiterated these feelings on Wednesday.

“Now we can make a decision if we bring someone in, is it the right one?” claimed Klopp. “I’m not 100% sure. Short-term? Probably yes. Long-term, I am not 100% sure.”

While Arthur comes in to this thin Liverpool midfield, he experienced his own injury problems during his career. The Brazilian missed 47 total matches due to illness/injury since joining Barca in 2018. This past year, he missed three months after intricate surgery on his right leg.

Nevertheless, the German manager has made it clear that he wanted to bring in a new midfielder and he gets his wish with Arthur. Liverpool’s next match is against Merseyside rivals Everton on Saturday, September 3.
