In the continued wake of The Queen’s passing, the Premier League postponed more games for the upcoming weekend. Others look set to roll on as scheduled.
This past weekend, all games in the English Football League did not happen. A period of national mourning has begun in the United Kingdom, and the Premier League, Football Association and English Football League all decided that no games would be played this past weekend.
However, the EFL announced that it would pick up its schedule on Tuesday. With many Premier League teams occupied with European competition, that meant continuing the schedule on Friday, Sep. 17. Yet, this latest news coming out of the Premier League demonstrates that there are more postponements in the wake of The Queen’s passing.
This upcoming weekend, three games are postponed. Those games are Saturday’s Brighton clash with Crystal Palace. Then, on Sunday, Manchester United’s game against Leeds, as well as the highly anticipated Chelsea–Liverpool fixture, are postponed.

Three Premier League games postponed
On the bright side, seven games are going on as scheduled. However, the three games postponed do not show much correlation.
The general understanding for why these games are postponed is the lack of police force available. Many officials and authorities have responsibilities in regards to The Queen’s funeral procession, slated for Monday, Sep. 19. With that taking place at Westminster Abbey in London, Chelsea is just minutes from there. However, games in Manchester and Brighton are not exactly close. Moreover, Spurs and Brentford, two more London clubs, are both also at home on the weekend. However, there is no change to their schedule.
The three postponed Premier League games follow suit of Arsenal, which postponed its Europa League tie with PSV Eindhoven on Thursday into a date to be determined.
The same applies to these three games. There is no date set out for when the makeup fixtures are. However, it is already a loaded schedule with the 2022 World Cup slotted in the middle of the season. Expect these three games, as well as any others yet to be postponed, to take place sometime after the turn of the new year.
There are also schedule changes to the games involving Arsenal and West Ham. Arsenal’s game at Brentford now kicks off at 7 a.m. ET on Sunday. After that, Everton hosts West Ham with kickoff scheduled for 9:15 a.m. on Sunday. The Premier League TV schedule stays up to date on any further changes in store for the league’s kickoffs.

If anyone still thinks the PL and EFL made the right decision to cancel matches last weekend, just go to Peacock if you have it.
4 Gallegher Premiership Rugby matches were played.
Watch the first few minutes of the replay of each.
The pre-match tribute to the Queen was subtle and appreciated.
The minute’s silence was immaculate. So immaculate the director felt it was OK to increase the level of the ground’s ambient sound.
And the singing of God Save the King symbolized the changing of the guard.
The PL and the EFL could not have screwed up last weekend more if they tried.

To be fair, the Premier League and EFL were in a no-win situation. If they allowed their games to be played, there would have been criticism combined with some fans boo-ing the tributes. If they postponed the games, there would be fans criticizing them for it.
The number of people watching rugby on Peacock is tiny, in comparison, so very few people in the United States noticed the tributes.

Hopefully any EPL fans looking for their soccer fix turned to Serie A this weekend. Almost every match filled with drama even though it was mostly title contenders vs bottom of the table fodder with the exception of Inter/Torino…Torino is better than that.
Napoli left it very late vs Spezia, Sampdoria gave Milan everything they could handle, Atalanta held to a draw by newly promoted Cremonese, Bolonga over Fiorentina (big upset in my mind with my expectations for Fiorentina heading into the season), and finally, the madness that was Juve v Salernitana.
I actually missed all the drama after the apparent winning goal because I turned it off! Only learned (to my delight) about the VAR decision and ensuing chaos later at night when looking at my app and seeing the 2-2 scoreline.
And right now, Roma tied with Empoli at 1 heading into the 2nd half.

Brighton v Crystal Palace was already off due to a train strike (which has now been cancelled).
Man. Utd v Leeds is a high-risk fixture and Greater Manchester Police resources will be called upon in London and elsewhere.
The Tottenham and Brentford matches will not be significant burdens on police resources

That is 100% wrong.
The PL and EFL took a calculated gamble…. and failed.
They were only interested in how they would look, and after rugby, racing, and cricket went on as (mostly) scheduled, their gamble failed. Big time.
Also, any journalism major should have learned you don’t bury the lede of a news story into the 4th paragraph.
Gaffer, we don’t expect Pulitzer prize winning writing here, but I’ll admit I spend less time on this site than I did a year ago. And, I’m certain that’s not your goal.

The period of national mourning wasn’t the reason the games were postponed. It was a decision by the leagues and English Football Association. Our aim is to make sure every article is accurate, so thank you for pointing that out. I missed it when I copyedited the story, and I’ll correct the mistake in a minute. No site is perfect, by any means, but we’re always striving to improve.
Meanwhile, traffic for the past 30 days compared to the same time period last year has increased 59.8%
