After the first matchday, Paramount+ reported record viewers in its UEFA Champions League coverage. The company did not release exact figures as to the number of people watching. However, CBS claims Paramount+ had the two most-streamed UCL group stage matchdays in the streaming service’s history this week.
Tuesday’s matchups apparently set the record for the company. Even then, Wednesday’s games received massive numbers as well. Overall, Paramount+ reported double-digit year-over-year growth in three categories. Growth occurred in average audience, streaming minutes and total households over both days of games.
The streaming service’s The Golazo Show also recorded their most-streamed show ever on Wednesday. The Golazo Show offers whip-around coverage showing viewers the most important moments from all of the matchups throughout the day. As Champions League group stage days can have up to six games occurring at once, The Golazo Show is the perfect way to catch all of the action.

Paramount+ record Champions League viewers
With Paramount+ scoring record numbers in just their first week of the current campaign, there will be plenty of chances to continue the hot streak moving forward. Champions League games are scattered throughout the season from September up until the final in May. There are still 10 more group stage matchdays before the knockout rounds begin.
Paramount+ recently renewed their U.S. media rights to stream Champions League matches until 2030. The platform will pay around $250 million per season, which would come to a grand total of $1.5 billion. According to reports, the previous contract to broadcast Champions League games in the U.S. was around $100 million per season.
Champions League matches return on Paramount+ next week. Ratings could get even better for the platform as there some tasty games set for both matchdays. Bayern host Barcelona on Tuesday, while superstar striker Erling Haaland will face his old club when Borussia Dortmund travel to Manchester City on Wednesday.

Pause function would be nice. Surely it can’t be that difficult.

Paramount+’s mistake is in not hiring Phil Schoen to team up with Ray Hudson. Those two work well together, but not so much with other guys. Poor Phil is stuck on beIN with this Thomas Rongen dude who thinks he has to go into a coaching session for every play. And as much as I like Ray, there’s no way I’m putting up with Andres Cordero’s staccato delivery. I didn’t listen to him on beIN; I certainly won’t on Paramount+.

I’m cancelling my Paramount+ subscription and switching to Vix+ because of Ray Hudson.

Out of curiosity, is Micah Richards still gonna be doing champions league coverage for CBS? The press release said he was but the way they’ve been talking it sounds like he’s no longer working for them.

I don’t like that the atmosphere of the stadium is completely drowned out on paramount. I watched Ajax v Rangers and I know it must’ve been electric in Amsterdam but you wouldn’t know it watching Paramount. I watch an Ajax eredivisie match today on ESPN+ and it’s so much better.

Great. Now please increase your bandwidth for Champions League matches! Your picture is inferior to view these matches and not to the standard viewers expect for such a popular sports venue.

Maybe they finally heard us, Liverpool/Ajax looks pretty good right now.

They really need to improve streaming quality. I’m spoiled now by Peacock and ESPN+. Now it’s Paramount+ time to step things up.

I can’t recall another UCL season where the majority of group matches were covered by single commentators. Am I misremembering, or is this true of Paramount+ new this season? Surely the Champions League games deserve a co-comm alongside the commentator?

Well that explains why a normally slightly laggy stream was constantly buffering and dropping, even though I went direct to ethernet. They really need to improve their streaming infrastructure if this will be the level of demand.

That is great to read. Paramount’s UCL coverage is strong and improving, and it is nice to know that is being rewarded with viewership increases
.
TUDN had just under 200k viewers for PSG-Juventus and Barcelona. Often, simulcast OTA is around triple TUDN, so maybe ~500k watching linear in Spanish. Curious what Paramount+ and ViX+ ballpark numbers are for UCL, but I suppose neither company shares proprietary data
.
Do you have a link to the original source quote regarding Paramount+ UCL viewership?

Hi Dave, the original source for the viewership was a press release that was emailed to us, so I’m not sure if it’s available to the general public.
