The Major League Baseball playoff between the Astros and Yankees has bumped the UEFA Champions League programming this week off FS1, which has ended up causing a domino-effect for soccer games that will cause confusion and havoc for many soccer fans in the United States.
Tuesday’s match between Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur was originally scheduled to be televised live on FS1, but due to the baseball game, the Champions League match has been bumped to FS2.
That means that the match previously scheduled for FS2 on Tuesday — Manchester City against Napoli — has now been bumped to the regional FOX Sports Net channels.
Worse yet, the Maribor-Liverpool game that was supposed to be on the regional FOX Sports Net channels across the United States will now be shown on FOX Soccer Plus.
Sadly, FOX Sports could have prevented all of this by broadcasting the Real Madrid-Spurs game as scheduled at 2:45pm ET on Tuesday (the Astros-Yankees game wasn’t scheduled to start until after 5pm ET, well after the Madrid-Spurs game would have ended) but instead, FOX Sports decided to air the MLB pre-game show instead.
For Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League games, there are no matches scheduled at 2:45pm ET on FS1 because of another MLB pre-game show, so that means we find Benfica-Manchester United only being available on TV via FOX Deportes, while Barcelona-Olympiakos is on FS2 and Bayern Munich-Celtic is on FOX Soccer Plus.

I remember when LCS games were on FOX, before FS1 was around.
Why didn’t they just put the LCS on FOX? Then all this mumbo jumbo could be avoided because FS1 would be available.

What’s really odd about this article is that TBS is airing the NLCS game at 9:00 tomorrow against the NBA Opening games at 8:00 and 10:30 on its sister network TNT. That means it actually would have benefitted Turner Sports, Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, and FOX Sports for FOX to air the UCL games as scheduled on FS1 and then air the primetime baseball game. (Turner, which owns TBS and TNT, wouldn’t have to cannibalize it’s own ratings; the MLB and NBA would each minimize competition against one of their most valuable properties, and FOX would be able to air the UEFA Champions League as scheduled).

All good arguments, except…
MLB wants 5:00 and 9:00 windows for the 2 games Tuesday and Wednesday.
The only way they can do that is ALCS @ 5:00EDT from NY and NLCS @ 9:00 EDT (8:00CDT in Chicago). They can’t start a game at 9:00 in New York.
Also, that gets them some prime time on the east coast for the Yankees and some prime time on the west coast for the Dodgers. And all prime time in Chicago.
If you look at the start times of the ALDS and ALCS, Houston has only been an afterthought

BTW, I’m not defending FS1’s decision to have a one hour MLB pre-game show.
A 2:45 EDT start of CL would end before 4:45, allowing for a 20 minute MLB pregame, with CL post-game on FS2 0r RSN’s.
As others have said, the FOX suits have determined there is more money with a 60 minute MLB pre-game.

The UEFA CL is a LAME DUCK at FOX.
By bumping it to FS2, FOX can save money by having only 2 pundits instead of 3 in the studio, as FS2-only pre-match shows are done from the “newsroom” set with a 3-person desk instead of the “spaceship” set with 4-person (and sometimes 5-person) desk.

Isn’t Turner using TruTV for the Champions League next year? Turner shows MLB on TBS because that used to be the Braves broadcast channel before it got a national broadcast deal with the MLB.

Turner will only use truTV for UEFA CL from Group Stage through Quarterfinal. Major League Baseball (on TBS, with overflow on TNT) will have no effect on CL.
Most viewers will watch UEFA CL on Univision Deportes Network, UniMas, and UnivisionDeportes.com/Univision Deportes App. Univision will hire its own announcers and studio talent while Turner will use World Feed announcers (I continue to project Turner’s studio talent to be Kate Riley and Carlos Bocanegra.)

Baseball is more popular in the USA than Soccer. Especially post-season baseball.
If you support a team who plays in the Champions League you probably see 99% of your teams games on TV anyway. In the USA. I’d say that is a pretty damn good deal.

All it shows is that more people will watch an MLB Pregame than the Champions League match. It’s simple numbers and the executives who make these decisions know it.
It’s the same reason that you see NASCAR Pregames preempting Goal Zones on most Sunday’s after PL matches on NBCSN. More eyes = more money.
These networks are in the business of making money – not making soccer fans happy.

The real issue is that hardly any Cable providers carry FS2. I’ve tried to get Comcast to carry FS2 in my region since Fox Soccer was shut down (2013) Comcast refuses. I’ve sent e-mails, letter and made phone calls. I pay to have the Sports & Entertainment package they Comcast won’t even add FS2 to that.
I just hope Fox doesn’t port over any of the World Cup games onto FS2. I don’t understand why Fox doesn’t use FXX, they only show non first run movies.
