ESPN networks and ABC will present all 51 matches and 140 combined hours of live coverage of the UEFA European Football Championship 2020, June 11 through July 11. Throughout the month-long tournament, ESPN+ will also offer a dynamic second-screen experience, daily studio programming and simulcasts of the semifinals and Final matches, among its first-ever European Championship offerings.
Coverage begins Wednesday, June 9, with a 30-minute tournament preview show (6:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2). On Friday, June 11, the opening match of EURO 2020 features Turkey vs. Italy from Stadio Olimpico in Rome (2:30 p.m., ESPN and ESPN App).
ESPN is presenting its fourth straight UEFA European Football Championship in the United States since 2008. Spain (2008 and 2012) and Portugal (2016) were previously crowned champions of football in Europe on ABC or ESPN networks.

@Tim – Keller played multiple top tier seasons in EPL, La Liga & Bundesliga, plus 100+ caps with the national side. Same with Tim Howard. They have plenty of international pundits with top flight experience. I mean, agreed that Twellman is awful on co-comms, but maybe try and complain about things that are actually a problem? Also the tactical cam is on ESPN+ only, but that horse has been beaten to death.

They’re so out of touch with the football community in the United States. They know that, unlike the World Cup which attracts regular and casual football fans like, the Euro Cup is followed mainly by regulars. They need to hire ex-footballers who have played in Europe’s top leagues and have a good grasp of English like they did for Euro 2012 and World Cup 2014. Since then, it’s gone downhill. Euro 2016 was a bummer as far as coverage. Too many Americans involved in the analysis and commentary for my liking. They can get some Dutch, German, Swedish, Danes who have played in the Premier League or La Liga, Bundesliga, and they will provide far superior analysis than Twellman, Foudie, Kasey Keller, etc. If they can’t do that, they should try to purchase the rights from BBC or ITV for their coverages but that might be difficult because of geographic restrictions.

This should be the last time ESPN get the broadcasting rights to the Euro Cup. Either that, or they themselves purchase the rights from either BBC or ITV to get one of their coverages to an American audience instead of doing any inhouse production themselves.. They would save more in paying the salaries of the jokers they employ than what they would pay either ITV or BBC. They totally dropped the ball on this one with the multi-view and tactical overhead camera. I thought their standards were starting to dip during the tournament five years ago as well. Euro 2012 they had good coverage minus Alexi Lalas. But 2016 they started getting more American voices to call the games and provide their analysis. That’s where it went downhill. Why don’t ESPN realize that Americans who watch the Premier League, Serie A, Champions League, week-in and week-out DON’T want Americans (who played at an inferior level or at women’s level) to comment and provide analysis on European football? It’s a TURNOFF and forces people to elsewhere for live streaming of games.

The fact that ESPN allow Taylor Twellman to ruin a match with his ridiculous commentary shows that they don’t have a clue about decent soccer coverage. If he is talking then the mute button goes on. Add to that we have to put up with 2 former goalkeepers in Tim Howard and Kasey Keller ramble on making no sense is so sad for the American audience. Julie Foudy??? Really?? A clueless. dinosaur. It’s a European Championship. Let’s embrace the tournament and its culture. Its not necessary to have any Americans on the desk.

@Michael F They did not – for Seria A only one game a week was not on ESPN+, and it actually was usually NOT the big matches. I can recall ONE inter match I wanted to watch that wasn’t on ESPN+, and it wasn’t a big match either. Other big games, like Bayern-Dortmund, were available on ESPN+ (although these games were on ABC, not ESPN/ESPN2). ESPN has other stuff to show in the fall and spring, its just summer when they have nothing else on that they pull the rug out from under ESPN+ customers. Nothing but opportunism and greed, and they have managed to convert this former enthusiastic paid-subscriber into someone who is not paying and trashing ESPN to other fans. Great bit of business. I suspect it will work out as well as Peacock has for NBC, ruining what goodwill they have built.
I expect ESPN to put every single La Liga game on ESPN+, as they have announced they will do. I will be surprised and upset if that is not the case and I will cancel and not pay.

I decided to use the break prior to the Spain-Sweden match to mention that I’m glad that I let my ESPN+ subscription lapse at the start of June because for one I did read The Gaffer’s mention about the -supplemental- Euro coverage on top of what is already on the main ESPN. I already have Fubo so I am not missing much in terms of what ESPN is producing. Now I will restart my ESPN+ subscription in August in time for La Liga, but based on the numerous rants Ive read not just on here but on other boards, ESPN+ isn’t adding much to the Euro. Is it as intended? Who knows. However for those who sworn off any TV subscription I can see why they could be disappointed, albeit unwarrantly thinking they could get all 51 matches for just $5.99. When ESPN+ started, it was intended to be an outlet for the multitude of sporting events that would not normally find time on the regular ESPN, such as the Dutch and Belgian Leagues, the European Qualifiers, or the voluminous American College Sporting events. Since the Euro is a Major Tournament and ESPN does have TV availability, the network will get the upper hand and resources.
What I just did for the Poland-Slovakia match was I put Prende TV on my Apple TV and turned on TalkSport on my PC. At the very least the original production is mostly maintained, especially the Score Bug (which ESPN’s look like something that reminded me of the ’02 World Cup), And I obtain good commentators from TalkSport. I strongly recommend it for those on a tight budget.

@Me Exactly right. Not to rain on Hans for misunderstanding what ‘second-screen experience’ means… but if you didn’t know that term, it certainly should make you question that it’s not the same as a full broadcast match experience.
Chris has so clearly reiterated in definition what ‘second screen experience’ is here, and to further question it and him and further complain about it endlessly – after these explanations is just quite frankly over the top. Perhaps we should move on. Enjoy the Euros everyone!

@Mercator Fully expect that ESPN will exclude El Classico and/or other big LaLiga matches from ESPN+ and only telecast on ESPN etc. They did this with Serie A big matches. And you should not be surprised.

Just to add to the pricing issue. Let’s assume the cost of owning the broadcast rights is the same between cable and streaming which now leaves just the cost of delivery to the end consumer. Disney DOES NOT own a cable provider, so they would have to negotiate a fee for ESPN with the likes of AT&T, Charter, Comcast, Cox, Dish and Verizon. These will be the middle men when comparing it to their Direct to Customer offering via the ESPN+ service. Which one is the cheaper solution for Disney? No negotiations with other providers and complaints by the cable networks for pricing just Disney and the paying end consumer a no brainer.

Thanks for expressing my feelings on this topic. Just to repeat a February 2018 quote from the Executive Chairman of the Disney company at the launch of the ESPN+ service to show what direction ESPN is heading:
“Over time, our intention would be for that app (ESPN+) to be the app that people experience ESPN on.”
Was this truthful or again marketing spin? I believe he can see the handwriting on the wall after 1st Qtr 2020 loss of 1.9 mil cable subscribers and again the same in 1st Qtr 2021. He understands that the business model of cable with its packages is not the future but will end up a niche product.
So to think that ESPN+ will become the go to solution for watching their sports events is not unreasonable if what he said is truthful. The only question is how long is “Over Time” is it 3 or 5 years or more. Judging from the Euro 2020 offering it looks like that it is longer then 3 years

@Michael F Everything has changed. The games are all FREE to stream in Spanish. They are free on the radio in English. There are numerous public broadcasters showing the game in half a dozen languages, free with a VPN. The reality is in 2021 there are several legitimate providers streaming the game for free or close to it, there are countless other providers you can pay 5 bucks to watch. So of course I’m not going to pay $40 to see the matches on ESPN+. For what, Moreno’s commentary? That is certainly not worth $40 more than watching in Spanish, or watching on BBC/ITV. I would probably pay $40 bucks for the BBC/ITV presentation given the video quality on BBC and some of the commentators on ITV, but that’s a while different issue.
Why would it be wishful thinking to expect that ESPN would put the football matches on the platform that exclusively hosts 99% of its football matches? How much did ESPN pay for these rights if they can be streamed free in Spanish but ESPN needs $40 a person to break even. That’s absolute nonsense. They put out misleading ads to get people to sign up for ESPN+, and then keep the games on cable. You shouldn’t need to read a site like this to figure out of the game is on ESPN+ or not (and in fact, multiple other sites were reporting all games would be live-streamed on ESPN+). The multiscreen on ESPN changes by the event – they did they same thing for CFB but actually the skycam is perfectly watchable in US Football and you could select your view instead of this useless three screen mashup (I.e. you could watch the CFB game basically normally with ESPN+). ESPN+ did not preview the three screen nonsense for a reason – no one would sign up if thats what they knew what they were getting. I even waited to cancel until the first game because I had no idea what the multiscreen would be like, and I follow this site and regularly watch ESPN! It’s deceptive advertising.
People are not going to sign up for a full cable package to get one channel or to watch a few games. Casual fans won’t care and will find something else to do, the rest of us will find another way to watch. It’s poor, short-term business – they aren’t growing the game or the product among younger fans without cable, and a lot of fans who would happily pay $5-10 bucks a month to watch the games will simply become adept and accustomed to watching for free and will not come back. NBC has already done this to the PL (my original motivation for finding alternate means to watch), Sinclair has done it for the last year with MLB/NBA/NHL teams. I guarantee it is not sounds long term business model. I will sign back up for ESPN+ when La Liga starts, but would be done with them for good if they try this same sort of nonsense with El Classico or certain big games.

@Hans – it’s generally accepted that a “second screen” will always mean a complimentary service to be viewed in conjunction with the main broadcast. Formula 1 broadcasters regularly offer a “second screen” option for race control, driver cam, leaderboards etc.
Yes, you and others have taken the press release in the wrong way but factually speaking, ESPN used the correct terminology to describe the service being offered.

The highlights show is posted late each night on ESPN+. It has been nice to see the matches presented with the world feed in an extended highlights package. Looks like it is produced centrally rather than by ESPN.

When a statement says “all 51 matches livestreamed via a second-screen experience” does the average user know the difference between “livestreamed via a second-screen experience” and “full match experience” streamed? I seriously doubt it, you may know it because this is your life and business.
The marketing guys at ESPN+ drew up a press release that was ambiguous and not clear what this ESPN+ experience would be like but it had the word “livestreamed” in it and it mislead users and that is why so many complaints have been registered at the ESPN and ESPNPlus twitter accounts and other ESPN support pages.
This was done with the intend of increasing subscriptions as every network does when they own the rights to major sporting events like the World Cup or Olympics.
It is equal to the misleading statement by wireless carries with their unlimited data plans. After a certain amount of downloads the High Speed stops and crawls to an unusable snail pace. They want to use the word UNLIMITED in their advertising so they throttle the speed to a snail pace level, but hey it is UNLIMITED.
ESPN wanted to use the word livestreamed to mislead users in their conclusions about the service. so they put this abomination of a production on. Their misleading statement fits the world we live in where truth doesn’t matter anymore. I echo the sentiment of others here this production was beneath ESPN’s normally excellent productions and they deserve all the outrage that is coming to them.

@Mercator I didn’t mean to upset anyone but these complaints are the same and repeated over and over whenever a provider or network denies some premier matches on their stream service and keep it only on their traditional cable network.
The reality is not much has changed. You stream only ‘cord cutters’ continue to complain about the same thing. Reality suggests we are not anywhere near providers only providing all of everything on a very inexpensive stream service.
And I do have a question for you: Would you pay about $40 or $50 extra as a premium to watch all Euro 2020 matches on their stream service ESPN+ If they so offered it?? If not, then your comment about it being about principle and not money… is false.
For providers like ESPN to make the money want from this, that’s what they would have to do. I don’t know about this deceptive advertisement you claim. I think it’s more wishful thinking on your part that you thought all these premier Euro 202o matches would all show up as full broadcasts as they do on ESPN. People pay for that service through whatever cable or satellite or live tv stream service. To think you would get all these premium euro soccer tournament matches for your $5 a month subscription on ESPN+…. Is definitely wishful thinking.
And anyways… Chris made it pretty clear on this site what it was going to be. If you don’t wish to read what this site offers for information, why are you here.? I say this Respectfully.
This site does a great job keeping us informed of what to expect. None of us should have been surprised what the telecast would like on ESPN+ or that it would not at all be like a full broadcast on its parent network ESPN. For $5 a month, the viewers should be happy you get anything at all.

Just want to echo the point by @Donald Dickerson that Prende has been very good so far for the Euro. According to WST schedule, Prende will stream every game that is not on Univision OTA.
* Download is free, no login required
* Video and audio are fine on an old iPad
* Broadcast is of the typical strong caliber I associate with Univision
* Games are easy to find “en vivo” by clicking the “Euro 2020” button in the app
* I did not see (nor search hard for) any pause/rewind/on-demand capability for matches

I didn’t know what to expect but I decided to try PrendeTV and wow great coverage for the EURO’s. I have almost no clue what they are saying but I was able to get the jest of everything. I dont know if I’ll keep it after the Euro’s but I guess I’ll wait and see what other soccer content they have.
Off topic but PrendeTV has shows and other content on it. I actually watched about 30 minutes of the movie WarGames last night wow I love seeing how they voice over the movie. Funny watching and seeing the mouth of the actor moving for 5 or 6 seconds and having the voice over go for like 2 or 3 seconds vice versa too where 1 word is said but the Spanish translation is like 5 words long.
All said download PrendeTV and you will be 100% better off than what ESPN+ has to offer for the EURO’s

In South America, the Uefa Euro airs on DirecTV and TNT Sports (both owned by AT&T.
However, TNT Sports doesn’t exist here in Uruguay, and I have cable TV so I can’t watch DirecTV Sports…

@Michael F I’m not sure what’s funny, the complaint is quite clear and consistent. Make the games available to stream, if you need a cable subscription people will watch elsewhere. Don’t run misleading advertising for ESPN+ tricking people into thinking the Euros are on.
I have never paid for peacock, I never will, and I will still watch my football. ESPN+ generally delivers good value, but I have cancelled the whole Disney bundle for the summer as I’m not going to pay for some ridiculous mutimanager drone shot of the matches. Yet, i will still watch all of the Euros. It’s quite simple, put the matches on to stream, without a cable bundle, and I will pay. If not, of course I’m not going to pay. It’s 2021, every game is free in HD on the internet without much effort. Tricking people into buying the service when the games aren’t on, requiring a 35 cable subscription for one channel showing one match, it’s a scam and fans have alternatives. I’m not going to be ripped off because these companies overpaid for their monopoly rights and now want 50 bucks a month to watch big football matches while running deceptive ads. Of course people complain, it’s the principle not the money.

It is hilarious to view all the same complaints now for ESPN as we had read for quite some time here when Peacock launched and Comcast split the broadcasts of EPL matches on NBC sports network and Peacock streaming. Same people here who were praising ESPN and hoping EPL will move to ESPN+ because they are so great… are now hating ESPN.
They are all going to follow the money stream. And if you want to watch primary coverage of premier euro soccer matches, you might have to pay some. Complaining won’t help. Although maybe some like to do that, as we sure get a lot of it here. 🙂

First of all not everyone reads WST plus no entitled whiners here just paying subscribers who are pointing out ESPN’s deceitful advertisement. No one had any idea what these hybrid views would look like. When their press release states “ESPN+ will livestream all 51 matches” how is one to know that this will be an unwatchable presentation. Hans, you’re taking ESPN’s press release completely out of context.
It reads:
“ESPN+ – all 51 matches livestreamed via a second-screen experience of three simultaneous video feeds with audio from ESPN match commentators, as well as simulcasts of the semifinals and Final match telecasts”
ESPN’s press releases never said the games would be available via ESPN+ in a full match experience.

@Michael – What are you talking about? All of the EURO 2020 games are streaming on the ESPN APP. How do you think people who are away from home are watching the games? They are using a computer. The only problem is you need a cable subscription, a log in to access the stream. My point is, this was not the case in past years, in past tournaments. I remember being at work and watching ESPN’s TV coverage of the World Cup & the Euros streaming on ESPN3 without any authentication. Google ESPN’s press release about it’s 2014 FIFA World Cup coverage. It’s all there in print. The German Cup is exclusive to ESPN3 but you can’t access it either without a authentication. This was not the case in past years. I have cable so I have access to all the games. I’m not complaining. My comments were directed to cord cutters. ESPN can put all the EURO 2020 games on ESPN3 like they for past tournaments. They refuse to do so because they’re greedy.

I have Sling blue, added sling orange for $15 that covers the Euros. no whining, no yelling just a mature plan to watch the matches, spend $15. duh

Here’s is ESPN’s official release regarding the Euro 2020 competition:
ESPN+ will livestream all 51 matches via a second-screen experience with three different feeds – an aerial cam (tactical cam) and two additional feeds that provide fans with a combination of player and manager Iso-Cams, as well as audio from ESPN’s match commentators.
Bob Iger’s remarks in February 2018 around the ESPN+ launch that the service would eventually be the key interaction point between ESPN and consumers: “Over time, our intention would be for that app to be the app that people experience ESPN on.”
Customers not reading WST or are not tech savvy enough to understand and know what second-creen experience and multiview means, were right to assume that ESPN+ would be streaming the Euro 2020 competition. Therefore the complains and requests for refunds.

The increased bandwidth and transmission costs don’t earn them any more money than showing the HD version. The BBC is different in that it’s a public service broadcaster and has no commercial interests as it’s funded by the licence fee.
The other UK broadcaster – ITV – which splits matches with the BBC is only showing theirs in HD.
Thanks @me. If I’m on the fence on watching a match, I’m more likely to watch if it’s in 4K which I think helps ESPN because it would draw in more viewers. Sadly I think I’m in the minority when it comes to picture quality. In this day and age I think many watch on computer, laptop, small devices where UHD doesn’t make as much difference. I’d rather watch the beautiful game in beautiful UHD picture on big screen tv.

ESPN+ never advertised streaming EUROs with the same feed as linear channel. Just like ESPN don’t show Grand Slams, German Pokal in their streaming app. The problem was to show that crap alternative view. They just should have not shown anything at all and nobody would have blinked an eye.

I wonder if others caught Taylor Twellman’s somewhat unhinged commentary during the pause in the Denmark game while Eriksen was being taken to hospital (criticizing the medics for not starting CPR quickly enough; rambling about how he (Twellman) had revolutionized the treatment of serious injuries, saying he had phoned a doctor for a prognosis, etc).. Kelly Cates very professionally tried to reign him in, while Macca and Clattenburg looked genuinely uncomfortable. Am I the only one who found it cringeworthy?

Those who did not read WST complained about false advertising as they took this second experience as streaming where you can select different cameras, thus the outcry and more comedy.
● multi view looks like I’m watching the livestream of some random dude that got a ticket in the nose bleeds section!
● ESPN revolutionizes broadcasting by bringing you the most entertaining part of soccer — the coaches.
● we waited a year to get the worst broadcast of the Euros in history.
● What non-soccer watching intern suggested this multi view garbage?
Since the Euro final is on July 11 many suggest as a solution use Sling tv for 10 dollar trial month will get you the ESPN channel.

The twitter accounts for ESPN and ESPNPlus are overflowing with massive complaints and angry customers. It makes for some light comedy. Here are just a few examples:
● Worst watching experience. Requesting refund.
● It is a total loss. Might as well watch through your neighbor’s window.
● Not sure what is most embarrassing about ESPNPlus’s multiview – the concept, the execution, or the simple fact that they thought anyone could possibly want to watch football this way.
● Multiview is terrible. Is your point for people to get rid of this service?
● ESPN your multiview is crap. The audio is out of synch, there are no replays and you have fixed cameras on the coaches, who NOBODY wants to see. You are forcing this on PAYING customers. Bad production, bad product and a total disservice.

As i have said before, all the cable networks that also have their own streaming apps are pretty much all the same. They all follow where the money is going to be the most.
On another note, what i am about to say next won’t be popular — but my oh my there is an awful lot of complaining here about how ESPN is covering the Euros. If it is so bad, don’t watch. If you are so upset about the alternate video feed provided from ESPN+, then for heavens sake stop your whining and spend a measly $10 we all know you have and subscribe to sling orange for one month and stop taking up space here repeating what has already been repeated enough.

@Azer. ESPN3 was there…but much of what was on ESPN3 then is currently on ESPN+ now. You can still watch all the OTA ABC games on ESPN3. You have never been able to watch everything there. Also last thing. ESPN3 is not “free.” If you look it up ESPN3 has contracts with many of the biggest ISPs so that even if you don’t have cable you are still paying for it with your internet bill. There are some isps where you can’t get ESPN3 because they don’t have a deal. It (ESPN3) has been changed greatly over the years…but despite the lower content every internet customer is still paying for it. All that being said, none of that matters. UEFA specifically gave rights to Disney to broadcast cable & and OTA. They didn’t sell Disney the streaming rights. It is simple as that. Now that we have ESPN+, Paramount +, Discover +, etc I am sure that the streaming rights will be a separate sale for 2024. Just like with the NFL They sold the OTA package to Fox, CBS, NBC, and ESPN…then they went back after the fact to sell a separate streaming package to Amazon Prime. I can see UEFA doing the same thing to maximize the next big bid. As for me, I am watching on free PrendeTV with SiriusXM radio feed in the background. I am enjoying every game with no issue.

It was announced long ago ESPN would not be showing the regular broadcast of the Euros on ESPN+, several times on this site. It’s an absolute joke and a slap in the face to all the football fans that have supported ESPN+ for making so many games available. They are no better than peacock and NBC at this point, and NBC at least doesn’t have golf commentators for matches.
The BBC presentation has been great, ITV decent as well. You can access both with a cheap VPN – mail a check for the license fee to the BBC if you feel bad. Don’t tolerate ESPN’s nonsense.

Depends on how long you have subscribed to the service and how long you have used it. Then read the fine print of the Terms of Condition and you should be able to contact through your account the ESPN support. If that doesn’t do it contact your credit card company and let them contact ESPN and see if they get a credit for you. This worked for me with a different vendor that was not willing to issue a refund.

Guys. I don’t know what everyone is surprised about. Chris has been telling us for months that the Rights for Euro 2020 were for ESPN/ESPN2/ABC…not ESPN+. When the rights for this was purchased was no such thing as ESPN+ or streaming for that matter. It lucky that ESPN+ has what it does. Chris has said several times, that when the next rights deal is negotiated then there is a strong chance that some of them will be streamed. For those that don’t have cable the EUROs are 100% free on PrendeTV. Normally they would all be free OTA on Univision/UniMas…but because of COVID pushing it back a year it conflicts with COPA America. For those of you that need commentary or don’t speak Spanish, sign up for three month free of SiriusXM Premier streaming and listen to the game on SiriusXM channel 157 Sirius FC. Another free auto option if you have Tunein is TalkSport and TalkSport2. I know they do EPL and Championship…not 100% sure they do EUROs. Now the audio won’t be exactly lined up the video…but it is better than nothing. I actually prefer the Spanish broadcast. After 5 years of listening to Ray Hudson broadcast every Weekend, I can’t take listening to the other British broadcasters that are calm, calculated, and cultured with their commentary. I can’t take that. I need the excited and fire. To each it’s own.

As everyone is finding out you need ESPN not ESPN+ for the Euros. If you are in the US just sign up for Sling Orange for a month at the extremely reasonable charge of $10 and that includes DVR so you can record everything, too. And whenever any ESPN talking head is on that irritates you listen to the BBC or Talksport radio feeds for that game. The entire Euros and alternative radio feeds for the massive sum of $10.

Multi view is crap and their announcers are worse. I’m going to try to find someone else give my money to. I’d rather listen to Spanish announcers that I don’t understand than the dreck I’m hearing.

The multiview stream sucks, trying to watch in USA. I don’t have a “TV provider” so I thought espn+ was going to be legit streaming option for the games like a normal watching format. I feel cheated. Why are we watching coaches and a useless end of pitch point of view. Terrible. Waste of the few dollars it cost to get espn+. Even the replay, if you want to watch it later and not live, is this useless format. They could at least provide the replay as a normal viewing format.

If like Hans you don’t have ESPN legally for the Euros the best way to get it is the Sling Orange 1 month intro special for $10. Sign up now, watch the whole thing, then quit. If you are frustrated with any of the ESPN match commentary, like today with Wales and the hopelessly misguided choice of Ale Moreno, one easy and free option is to listen with the Talksport UK radio feed, very easy to sync up with the ESPN video feed. If you are in the US it is been a joy so far to watch BBC1 on the iPlayer with a real VPN, very smart very savvy pregame commentary by Gabby Logan, Ashley Williams, Hal Robson-Kanu and Mark Hughes. NordVPN has dozens of special servers set aside just for the BBC, just make sure to change the clock on your computer to reflect BST.

Videos like this make me so glad we have the ‘World Feed’ for commentary and pretty non descript but not crass pre/post game commentary. I think I’ve seen Stephen A Smith on basketball coverage but he reminds of the kind of guy you would run into at a sports bar who doesn’t follow ‘football’ so he compares it to things he knows that don’t really compare.
If DAZN did the euros we would have that guy who does the Saturday round up with that really ‘canadian’ guy. The two guys who pretend to have an argument.

The BBC iPlayer coverage was exceptional last night. Available in stunning UHD HDR (HLG HDR to be precise) and it looked incredible. They have the full match available to rewatch for the next 30 days too, so it sounds like a much better experience overall than ESPN+ or TSN for Canadian viewers.

Azer, thanks for pointing out the obvious, which I also share, it is a push for supporting a dying business, the TV cable packages. The glory days are gone and they will not come back no matter what. So far in the 1st quarter of 2021 pay TV dropped by 1.9 Million subscriptions and sees record losses. You think by now they would get the hint.

Fair enough that they didn’t feature it and WST didn’t list it, but to put on such a horrible coverage for their subscribers is an insult to the intelligence of the cord cutting footballing fans. Networks are trying to use events of global interest, for which they own the rights, to force people to buy into a dying way of media consumption, the cable package.
If you want to watch the Euro 2020 competition you have to either get a cable package or one of those overpriced streaming packages that have the ESPN channel included.
At this time the same is true for the WC 2022 coverage to be broadcast on FOX and FS1 and again viewers are being forced into the same solutions as for the Euro 2020 just on a different network. Again it is not a headache for me and many others who know how to get live and on demand coverage on the net.

@Christopher Harris – I’m sure you remember ESPN many years ago allowed viewers access on ESPN3 without using credentials. I’m talking about the 2014 FIFA World Cup & EURO 2016. You could go to ESPN3 click on the game and watch it without log in.
Now if you’re a cord/cutter and subscribe to ESPN+ you still cannot access the game streaming ESPN3. You have subscribe to a cable package.

Callum, you and I have just suffered through the most useless presentation of a football match and we will not repeat it. For me the ESPN-FC is fine after the match but any Euro 2020 match itself will not be watched on ESPN+ again unless that format is changed. I wish there would be a forum to complain about this absolutely dismal presentation that the suits who make the programming decisions will see what football fans think of this PIA presentation on ESPN+ of the Euros.

Our TV/streaming listings have purposely never included ESPN+ as one of the choices. ESPN+ was always going to be a second-screen streaming option, not a first screen. All of our reporting has focused on the television coverage of this tournament on ESPN.

WTF was this second-screen (multiview) experience on ESPN+ a total waste of resources and bandwidth. Loads of empty framing space with less then 1/4 of the screen for each camera on Italy and Turkey dugout throughout the entire match, BORING. Less then 1/2 a screen for the full pitch with no messages of subs and more reflecting a still image of the pitch then anything else in other words totally unwatchable. Whoever thought this was a good idea should be reassigned to the video surveillance department because that is what it reminded me of, 3 surveillance cameras covering the match.
Again this looked more like a push for a sign up to the ESPN cable package then anything else. I expected better from ESPN+ who pride themselves as the standard setters for streaming sports events. I can only say until the powers to be understand what the streaming public wants the IPTV services and pirate streams are alive and doing well.

There were a lot of people thinking that the ESPN+ stream would be a sufficient viewing experience, but it’s only meant to supplement coverage. It’s no comparison to the TV broadcast.
If you want the regular match experience, you’ll need to watch on ESPN (look at schedule below for streaming viewing options).

I’m in Canada and we get the ‘world feed’ here as well on TSN. Martin Tyler and Alan Smith for the Italy/Turkey game.
TSN half time commentary and pre and post game analysis is quite weak (Kevin Kilbane, plus Luke Wileman alongside TSN soccer analyst Steven Caldwell, former Canadian Men’s National Team captain Julian de Guzman, and Canadian Women’s National Team star Janine Beckie.). Kristian Jack who did this type of analysis in the past for TSN was the victim of a TSN purge.
As long as I don’t have to hear Ian Wright give little analysis and the other former england internationals wonder why england don’t win this I”m fine.

I’ve been downplaying the multi-cam features on ESPN+ for the last couple of weeks. If you’re a soccer coach who wants to analyze team shape and tactics, maybe it’s worth it. But otherwise, it’s a complement to the TV broadcast, not a replacement for it.

what happened to the preview show? I couldn’t catch it live and now I can’t find it aywhere, on the ESPN app or on my YouTube TV library.

I will be watching the overseas carriers on this. I don’t want my intelligence insulted and lower-thirds of bios of the talking heads at the desk shown every two minutes.

Will ESPN be using the same studio for the Euros as they do for ESPNFC? Feel like that would kind of be a downgrade
