TelevisaUnivision, the company formed by the merger between the two Spanish-language giants, this week announced the upcoming launch of a brand-new streaming service named ViX. The streaming service comes in two flavors. First is the free advertising-supported ViX. Second is the premium version entitled ViX+.
A new streaming service may not seem like a big deal, but this one is certainly a change for soccer fans in the United States, for several different reasons.
First, when ViX+ launches later this year, it will be the exclusive home to a select number of UEFA Champions League games for Spanish-language viewers. Most of the Champions League games will still be available on linear television such as Univision or sister channels such as UniMas and TUDN. But to watch some of the games in Spanish, you will need Vix+.
Second, the launch of ViX on March 31, 2022 (and late 2022 for ViX+) will mean that Prende TV (just launched in March 2021) will be phased out. With ViX, the plan is for TelevisaUnivision to have one global brand. TelevisaUnivision sees the ViX app as its be-all and end-all.
Third, ViX will include a brand-new 24/7 sports news channel called Zona TUDN. This will be in addition to the 100+ linear channels available for free on ViX.
Fourth and finally, ViX will include programming from beIN SPORTS in Spanish. More details to come on that.
It’s important to note that ViX is not just a sports app. In fact, it features hundreds of new series and movies, while also carrying Spanish-language live TV. That being said, there are a number of major soccer events TelevisaUnivision is placing exclusively on ViX or ViX+.

ViX is first global Spanish-language streaming service
Currently, there is not a Spanish-specific streaming service. Rather, Spanish-speaking audiences have just a handful of sections to choose from the slate of streaming services such as Peacock TV, ESPN+ and Paramount+, for example.
TelevisaUnivision provides an abundance of content on both the AVOD and SVOD version of ViX. The AVOD version, or just ViX, stands for advertisement-based video on demand. While this is free of charge, users do have to watch advertisements throughout their viewing experience. However, it is an easy way for Spanish-speaking audiences to access broadcast-quality television.
ViX+, the SVOD version of the service, just goes that bit further. SVOD stands for subscription video on demand. ViX+ includes original content in the form of movies, shows and sports. There is not yet a price point for ViX+.
Currently, a beta version of ViX is available for select users in the United States and Mexico.
Soccer on ViX and ViX+
Starting off with ViX, any user will have access to a number of top leagues and competitions through the service. The provider claims it carries more competitions for Spanish-language audiences in front of the pay wall. Games will likely include select matches from the Brazilian and Argentine leagues, as an example.
Plus, a new 24/7 sports channel till cater to sports fanatics. Zona TUDN will air talk shows, analysis, commentary and interviews throughout each day. Additionally, ViX has a “Game of the Week,” picking one of the games in the provider’s repertoire.
On the subscription side of things, expect more than 3,000 individual games across the ViX+ array of channels. ViX+ has exclusives that truly set it apart from its competition. For one, four Liga MX teams and a variety of leagues across the world are on the SVOD service. Among those is the UEFA Champions League, which sees its Spanish-language home on ViX+.
Moreover, the Mexican National Team will have a number of games on ViX and ViX+.
While ViX+ will be up and running in the second half of 2022, that aligns well with the World Cup in Qatar during November and December. Zona TUDN, in particular, will have lots of coverage around the world’s biggest tournament.

Not every member of the family is a soccer fanatic, but ViX ensures coverage for everybody. The provider announced over 20 original programs that will be on ViX+. This includes “ViX+ Originals,” movies, TV series, telenovelas, sports docuseries and content from Videocine.

It sounds like it will be the same for the other leagues as well. Show all matches for free this season and next season switch them to the premium VIX with probably one free match every round on free VIX. If they’re able to get the Libertadores/Sudamericana rights, then it’s a no brainer.

Agree. Besides the lack of match replay, I used VIX this weekend and it is way better than Fanatiz. It will be hard for them to convince me to pay $8-10 for Libertadores and Sudamericana alone. I would like to see the English, Spanish and Portuguese rights split so that we have more options. For Brasileirao, I have 4 different options – Paramount+, VIX, Sling World Sports, and Fanatiz. All of them show all the games.

Vix is going all out. They are showing all matches from Argentina, Brasil, Colombia and Peru leagues. RIP Fanatiz. Will be interesting to see what the premium plan will have later in the year.

The irony here is that many of the rights that ViX has were sold to them by Fanatiz, so Fanatiz isn’t hurting. They’re making out like bandits.

This only tells me they are going out of business eventually. In the long run, how is it a good business model to sublicense all of your properties and offer them simultaneously but under an inferior product? How long before Fanatiz users realize there is a better product with the same properties. I will subscribe to Vix before Fanatiz. That is the difference.

Paramount+ needs to get the Copa Libertadores rights when those expire (English and Spanish). That would be a bigger deal for their summer offerings than those two leagues.

I agree. The next big streaming deal for me is Libertadores + Sudamericana. Both are very fine competitions that I really enjoy watching, particularly on summer nights. I just wished that the group stage (the bulk of matches) was a little later.

Is there any speculation about the cost per month for Vix+?
I would be likely to subscribe if it is around $5/month if that means I can watch matches on-demand without commercials.
The Prende experience for the Euros last year was really disappointing if you wanted to watch a match on demand as matches were interrupted every 10 minutes by commercials!

Thank you for the information. Part of this seems like Prende being folded in (along with other pieces) to a larger, merged corporate offering. There have already been a handful of UCL/UEL games exclusively on Prende; seems that will continue with ViX.

I will be interested to learn about ViX exclusivity for Liga MX (same as you on the pod, which four teams?) and Mexico MNT (exclusivity or availability?). I am concerned about implications for TUDN, which has become one of my favorite channels. If TUDN lose marquis sports such as Liga MX to ViX, perhaps TUDN is starting on the path to sunset ala NBCSN/Peacock.

Difference being there’s a TUDN in Mexico, so Univision saves by getting the production and programming from them. There might be some exclusivity, but also some simulcast. Also, it seems like the transition to streaming is slower in latino households due to the diverse spanish channels available from different countries in satellite/cable packages. I would say TUDN is safe with so much programming to offer.

VIX is also the name of a stock market volatility index…otherwise known as “the fear index”. 1st thing that popped in my head when mentioned in today’s pod. Definite market confusion for people in the financial industry. Wonder why they decided to use this moniker, seems very random given their parent company name.

@JP – I thought I was listening to the wrong podcast when I heard this, is that Kartik or Jim Cramer? It’s the exact same when written, so I’m sure they are going to have the Chicago Fire problem on google. ¡GOOOOOAL! would have been a better name, I would download that on the app store without even checking what it is. Whatever it’s called, it’s free football so its a welcome addition as long as they don’t run commercials during the matches like Bein Xtra.
