Univision acquires rights to Euro 2024

The self-proclaimed “Home of Soccer” in the United States has acquired more rights. According to World Soccer Talk sources, Univision has acquired the Spanish-language rights to Euro 2024, Euro 2028 and more in a mega deal with UEFA.

World Soccer Talk reached out to Univision but the spokeswoman offered no comment. An official announcement by UEFA and Univision is expected in the coming days.

In all, TelevisaUnivision has picked up the Spanish-language rights to:

UEFA Euro 2024
Euro 2028
Qualifiers to UEFA Euro 2024 and 2028
European Qualifiers to FIFA World Cup 2026
Friendly Matches played by European nations controlled by UEFA, and
UEFA Nations League

Univision’s spending spree for soccer rights

Univision’s mission behind acquiring so many rights is in preparation for the launch of ViX+ later this year. ViX+ is TelevisaUnivision’s streaming service that offers movies, shows, news and sports. The paid version, price to be determined, features more than 3,000 live soccer games per year in Spanish. It is the home of four Liga MX teams, with games exclusively available via ViX+. Additionally, select UEFA Champions League games in Spanish air exclusively on the paid streaming service.

In all, Univision’s sports division TUDN also has the rights to several other major leagues and tournaments:

UEFA Champions League
Europa League
Conference League
MLS
CONCACAF Nations League
Gold Cup
CONCACAF Champions League
Select games from Brazilian and Argentine leagues

Under the new deal between UEFA and Univision, coverage begins June 1 with the UEFA Nations League on ViX.

Univision acquires rights to Euro 2024: Analysis

While Telemundo Deportes has the World Cup and the Premier League, TUDN is the leader in Spanish-language sports in the United States.

By adding Euro 2024 and Euro 2028, it positions TUDN as the leader in Spanish-language coverage. TUDN’s rights include many of the biggest games in both club soccer and international football.

Meanwhile, FOX Sports and fuboTV have the rights to the Euro competitions.

With the list of content that is there. Vix plus might be appealing to someone like me who does not know a lick of spanish!

If they add Libertadores/Sudamericana, it’s a no brainer!

Libertadores/Sudamericana is a gem. I wonder why we hardly hear about it here.

It is currently obscured in BeIn, but if Paramount+ or ESPN got the rights for 2023+, they could have a great product to offer, especially for Latinos. Rights should not be expensive, and the product is great. Great rivalries, atmosphere, soccer.

What a great move from Univision/Vix; with the poor coverage/lack of matches on Fox, all the people not finding the Nations League on TV / English will receive with open arms the availability on Univision and Fox.

Just read two articles (one on Variety) regarding their take on Vix and Univision balance (they were able to increase ratins on Univision while supporting/launching Vix) + how they view the relationship between Vix / Vix + versus others, very interesting points and look really solid.

We will see in their next quarterly reports how the Nations League move helped Vix and their plans for Vix+.

Great news, especially if Vix+ pricing is reasonable. Anything to avoid the Fox/Fubo racket.

Any idea when Univision will make the announcement regarding content split between Vix and Vix+ and pricing for Vix+?

I love how ViX is free. The stream is pretty good. I wish their is a SAP option for the matches. It’s better then paying for FUBO. This is an excellent announcement since I can watch the ITALY-England match and instead of buying Fubo I can just use ViX which is free. Excellent news and article guys.

Lot of motion blur for the Italy/Argentina match on ViX, but it’s free! When they launch ViX+ they need to improve the picture quality.

Side note, worst part of Italy failing to qualify for the World Cup is these simple yet beautiful kits won’t be seen during the tournament! I’m not one to purchase kits, but damn, these are nice. Shade of blue is on point after getting too dark in the kits since the 2002 World Cup. Forza Azzurri

Same here. Picture quality is somewhat poor. But the breadth of their portfolio is great. If they improve image quality, and provide DVR controls, they will be #2 in my streaming priorities, behind ESPN+. #1 if they add multicast.

Same as both of you, some video issues pre-game and during the game. Not sure how much is world feed vs. TUDN. There is also that guy with microphone issues who sounds like the PA system on an ancient public transit vehicle. Overall, happy with the coverage and hopeful ViX will keep ironing out bugs as they mature. Also looking forward to more of these UEFA-CONMEBOL collaborations

@Chris Do you know anything about the Libertadores rights for 2023 in the US? At least who is in the run? Deadlines? How much did BeIn pay in the last cycle?

This news really made my day. Another way for people to tell Fox to take their “coverage” and put it where the sun doesn’t shine.

I can predict next year that Univision and either ESPN or CBS Sports will win the rights for FIFA World Cup in 2030 and 2034, mark my words

      • Albert Pineros

        June 1, 2022 at 2:36 pm

This will happen next year or 2024 that FIFA will pick either ESPN or CBS to win the English rights for FIFA and also Univision former longtime rights holder for Spanish rights as well but not Telemundo which they already their stupid broadcasting rights with FIFA since 2015 but just like when last year that Telemundo was almost acquiring Copa America but then CONMEBOL awarded those rights back to Univision

Correction – all Brazilian Serie A games are on Vix+ in Portuguese. Select games are also available in Spanish.

There’s already Vix+? Or are you saying that will happen when they launch?

        • Ra

          June 1, 2022 at 10:11 am

My mistake – they are available on Vix now.
If they offer full DVR controls and multicast, Vix+ can count on another customer here.

Fox actually thought? That would be a first.

Good, an alternative to Fox taking over the English rights. Maybe now, Telemundo’s recent World Cup presentations will now force them to up their production quality in time for Germany.

“TUDN is the leader in Spanish-language sports in the United States” is incorrect.

They may have a lot of Spanish language SOCCER rights but Fox Deportes and ESPN Deportes have much more other SPORTS in Spanish than they do. (NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, F1, UFC, NCAA, etc.)

    June 1, 2022 at 3:12 am

Telemundo Deportes also has rights to the Olympics through 2032 in addition to the afore-mentioned Premier League through 2028 and the FIFA World Cup and related rights through 2026.

The best part about Univision’s coverage:

    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLL!!!!

Cheers for Televisa and for all of us who continue to despise Fox’s coverage of the beautiful game.

Second best part about Univision’s coverage: IT’S NOT FOX!

  13. dave

    May 31, 2022 at 12:11 pm

Great news! TUDN consistently provide excellent soccer coverage. I am pleased they will continue to own Spanish rights in the US for enjoyable European tournaments
    .
With ViX+, it looks rather similar to the ESPN Sports model. ABC (Univision, UniMas); ESPN/2/U (TUDN, TUDNxtra, Galavision); ESPN3 (ViX); ESPN+ (ViX+)
    .
Main questions remaining are price for ViX+ and whether there will be disaggregated options (like how a customer can choose ESPN+ or Disney+ standalone)

Univision will get the UCL, etc until 2028 that’s my prediction
