FOX Sports World Cup schedule revealed

FOX Sports World Cup schedule

FOX Sports World Cup schedule has been revealed. The headline is that every USA game will air on the FOX network. Other than that, there are some changes compared to how FOX Sports televised the previous World Cup.

Unfortunately, FOX Sports’ conflicts with NFL and college football programming means that there’ll be fewer games on FOX. For the 2018 World Cup in Russia, FOX Sports aired 38 games on its over-the-air FOX Network. In contrast, the number has been reduced by three to 35 for World Cup 2022. Those three games will be on FS1 instead for a total of 29 games on that channel. FIFA’s decision to reschedule the Qatar 2022 from summer to winter certainly didn’t help matters.

Looking at the schedule below, the two days that will hurt FOX Sports the most are Saturday to Sunday, November 26-27. On that opening weekend, none of the games will air on FOX. That’s due to scheduling conflicts with college football and NFL. The two major matches that the FOX network would have loved to air are Argentina vs. Mexico and Spain versus Germany.

Elsewhere, FIFA’s decision to showcase a lot of the major games in the 2PM-4PM ET time slot helps. Every single day, there is a mammoth game scheduled in the 2-4PM ET time slot of the FOX Sports World Cup schedule:

USA vs. Ukraine, Scotland or Wales, Nov. 21
France vs. Peru, Australia or UAE, Nov. 22
Belgium vs. Canada, Nov. 23
Brazil vs. Serbia, Nov. 24
England vs. USA, Nov. 25
Argentina vs. Mexico, Nov. 26
Spain vs. Germany, Nov. 27
Portugal vs. Uruguay, Nov. 28
Iran vs. USA, Nov. 29
Saudi Arabia vs. Mexico, Nov. 30
Germany vs. Costa Rica or New Zealand, Dec. 1
Serbia vs. Switzerland, Dec. 2

NFL hasn’t announced anything official yet, but they’ve done FOX a solid. FOX’s Thanksgiving Day NFL game will air later that day to allow FOX Network to air two World Cup games in the afternoon.

Overall, the FOX World Cup schedule is the best it can be. If the competition had been held in the summer as originally scheduled, it would have avoided some major conflicts. But due to Qatar’s scorching temperatures, that was not meant to be.

@ChristopherHarris Excellent article on the 2022 FIFA World Cup updated schedule. Excellent work. I wonder how the NFL is going to be impacted by this and also having a NFL match in Allianz Arena which is Bayern Munich’s stadium is a huge draw for soccer fans as well. I can’t wait for the 2022 FIFA World Cup to begin. Please follow me on Instagram @mschiano7forlife for my Instagram lives and also follow me on Twitter called @90minuteclub #90minuteclub. I would expect the NFL to schedule the match in München for sometime in October when Bayern is on the road.

Hopefully Fox will have a good prime time evening highlights show on their main Fox network.

Thank you to the WST team for so many interesting articles and interviews about 2022 World Cup broadcast plans. Nontraditional timing and conflicts with mainstream US sports make that an especially interesting topic. A few reactions:
    .
    * I am not surprised November 26 will be college football on FOX. Argentina-Mexico should draw a huge audience on Telemundo, but Big Noon on FOX will likely draw even more.
    .
    * The decisions of FOX/FS1 and Telemundo/Universo for final group stages are interesting. Of the 8 blocks, 5 have FOX and Telemundo carrying a different game. Of note, FOX chose Argentina-Poland over Mexico while Telemundo and FOX both chose USA.
    .
    * I am guessing they have not yet finalized knockout coverage plans. I think (hope) college football should not impact December 3. December 4 NFL is trickier.
    .
    * I am intrigued by what FOX plan for Thanksgiving NFL. The Telemundo interview suggests they are confident the evening NFL game is NBC/Telemundo. Direct cut from the end of Brazil-Serbia to FOX NFL kickoff (pregame on FS1) with CBS taking the early game? FOX owe a nice quid to NFL and CBS if so. Great to see big Thanksgiving events OTA.

Last year Fox had early Thanksgiving game, so it’s their turn for late Thanksgiving game this time. Also, that game starts at 4:30 which gives them plenty of time for pregame show.

@Lovac1, thanks, I should have remembered that since Lions-Bears was the lead-in to FOX’ blowout MLS ratings. I was erroneously thinking FOX had the Cowboys last year.

@Dave. 12/03 could be a little tricky. The Big 10 Championship Game will be Primetime at 8:00 pm. But they also broadcast the Big 12 Championship game, and the Pac 12 Championship game. The last two year the Pac 12 game was moved to Friday Night. If they do that again, you are looking at 2:30 for the Big 12 if they move it back. This year the Pregame at 10:00 lead right into Big Noon which was the B12 title game. If I had to guess for that Saturday 5, 8, and 11 games will be on Fox. The 2 will be on FS1. For December 10, and December 17 I think they will all bein on Fox because CFB regular season will be done and CBK are usually on FS1 until New Years.

@Michael, December 3 has only two knockout World Cup games – if I am reading time zones correctly, 10 am ET and 2 pm ET.
        .
Did they change the Big 12 contract recently? ABC showed the 2021 Big 12 football championship. Per ESPN in 2019, “The Big 12 Conference has signed a deal to expand its rights agreements with ESPN, which will now broadcast every Big 12 football championship game through the 2024 season…”
        .
Pac-12 rotates (this year is FOX), B1G and MWC are FOX, everything else I believe is ESPN or CBS. I think (hope) Pac-12 will be Friday evening again. If Riley restores USC to past glory, maybe the Pac-12 championship becomes Big Noon Saturday. I doubt MWC would bump World Cup off FOX.

@Dave you are right. B12 was on ABC and the MWC of on Fox. I think that could be moved to 4:30 and B1G at it’s normal 8:00. That would give time for both knockout matches to be at 10 and 2.

Fox is putting more games on over the air than ESPN/ABC ever did.

No Universo is on Cable. Is is roughly the Spanish equivalent of USA Network.

I contacted Fox and told them that they shouldn’t put games on FS2. It worked.

      April 11, 2022 at 1:25 pm

They were never going to put a game on FS2. You contacting them did nothing to change that

        April 11, 2022 at 4:52 pm

@David, you were more sanguine than I about the risk of FS2, especially on November 26. I am happy FOX will shuffle college football to make room for World Cup on FS1. I did not see that as an ironclad guarantee.

I contacted also them and asked them to broadcast the WC. It also worked. 🙂
