FOX Sports face challenges in its World Cup schedule, according to Telemundo Deportes President Ray Warren.
Speaking exclusively to World Soccer Talk, Warren shared Telemundo’s initial coverage plans, as well as contrasting them with rival FOX Sports. Overall, as the exclusive home of the World Cup in Spanish-language, Warren is pleased with how the FIFA World Cup Draw turned out, particularly for Spanish-language audiences.
“We love the draw. We love the timing of the games,” said Warren.
A weekend of huge World Cup matches
Throughout the Group Stage, Telemundo has several games that are of particular interest to Spanish-language viewers. For example, these include three major ones across the four-day Thanksgiving Day holiday weekend:
Brazil-Serbia (Thanksgiving Day, 2PM ET)
USA-England (November 25, 2PM ET)
Argentina-Mexico (November 26, 2PM ET)
On Thanksgiving Day, Telemundo Deportes are expecting a huge day of sports. They’ll have four World Cup matches featuring Portugal-Ghana, Brazil-Serbia and Uruguay-South Korea, as well as Switzerland-Cameroon. After the Brazil-Serbia game ends around 4PM ET, there’ll be an hour of post-match coverage followed by the news. And the broadcast will then lead into NFL Thursday night football.
Warren explained how that gives Telemundo advantages on the long Thanksgiving Day holiday weekend:
“There’s a couple of places where FOX may be stuck. The Argentina-Mexico game will conflict with their football product. I don’t know what they’ll do. They might move the football game. Looking at it straight up, Argentina-Mexico may have to go on FS1.”
Pluses of Telemundo’s coverage
Warren is confident about his network’s coverage ahead of World Cup 2022. In its plans, he sees several benefits of watching the World Cup on Telemundo. These include:
First, Telemundo will have more games on over-the-air television than FOX Sports. Second, Telemundo will have commentators calling every game live from within the stadium. Third, Telemundo sees an increase in the number of pundits including more former players and referees, and more women. Fourth, 56 games live on Telemundo with no conflicts with other sports (unlike FOX Sports). Fifth, 8 games on Universo (in the Group Stage when there are simultaneous kickoffs). Sixth and finally, 1 hour post-game show every day after the 2-4PM ET match ends.
Telemundo’s motto is “es mejor en Español,” which translates to “it’s better in Spanish.” Warren and his fellow executives will be hoping that viewers will see that for themselves when the World Cup begins on November 21.

World Cup belongs on network tv not only FS1- a channel that is not accessible to all.
This will lead to many viewers tuning into Telemundo to watch- kinda like what it was like to watch the World Cup in the 1980’s when every game was on Telemundo and the majority of games were not even on the main networks.

Interested in this as well. This is the one pro FOX has – they generally do quite a bit in 4K for free with the cable login. Man that would be sweet.

I don’t think Fox’s football scheduling conflicts putting games on FS1 is a very big deal when you consider those conflicts resulted in Fox getting the 2026 WC in the US without going through a bidding process. Going game by game, the move from the traditional summer schedule (and into football season) only bumped six games from Fox to FS1:
Nov 26: France/Denmark, Argentina/Mexico
Nov 27: Croatia/Canada, Spain/Germany
Dec 4: 2 Round of 16 games
Viewers that will watch a World Cup match over NFL games are going to be able to find these games just fine and well worth the deal Fox is getting here.

Hardcore and casual fans in Spanish speaking households will watch Telemundo
English speaking casual fans will watch by chance if they come across it when shown on big Fox.
Hardcore fans (English or Spanish) with no FS1 will watch on Telemundo or Peacock.
Hardcore English speaking fans with access to FS1…don’ know because there seems to be a lot of Fox hate among this group so they may gravitate to Telemundo out of spite.

What I did in the last World Cup, I’ll do this time around as well and that is put on Telemundo/Universo and have on TalkSport so I’ll get the best of both worlds in terms of production quality and English high-level analysis.

I can never get an alternate play by play/commentary to sync up well enough to enjoy doing something like this. They’re always off by like 10-15 seconds and I can never manage to get them to sync.

It is not straightforward. I am able to sync by waiting some obvious event that will serve as a timestamp, pause the audio and wait the video to catch up. It is usually delayed something between 5-60s, so it will depend a lot on the competition.

It will not work for that. In 99% of the cases, the tv feed will be delayed to the radio. The only solution is to pause the radio stream. You have to do it in the radio app (TuneIn, Sportshau).

Are these really ‘big’ advantages? FOX is still showing the matches, albeit some on FS1. Viewers will still find it. Telemundo still has to use the same feed and graphics.
FOX likely had some wink-wink-nudge-nudge influence on scheduling…did Telemundo have that advantage?
