At its investor presentation Wednesday, ViacomCBS announced several new rights acquisitions for the streaming service Paramount+ as well as pricing changes ahead of its March 4 2021 launch date.
For soccer fans, the headline news is that Paramount+ has added to its current soccer rights of the Champions League, Europa League and NWSL by acquiring the exclusive English-language rights in the United States to international games in the CONCACAF (including World Cup qualifiers) as well as English-language broadcasts of the Brasileirāo and Argentine Primera División.
More specifically, the newly-acquired rights include:
Argentine Primera Division – Paramount+ will stream more than 300 matches a year in English-language from Argentina’s top soccer division, the Liga Profesional de Fútbol.
Campeonato Brasileiro Série A – Paramount+ will stream more than 360 matches a year in English-language from Brazil’s premier soccer league.
CONCACAF – Paramount+ will offer more than 200 matches from the CONCACAF region, starting with the CONCACAF Nations League finals in June 2021, which will feature the U.S. Men’s National Team. Coverage will feature all 41 national teams from North and Central America and the Caribbean across different competitions, including the qualifiers for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, which will feature the defending champion U.S. Women’s National Team, as well as the CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup (including the U.S. Men’s National Team) for road games played outside the United States and Mexico.
CBS All Access will be rebranded as Paramount+ on March 4 and will feature over 1,000 live sporting events per year, including regular season games, playoffs, championships and more across the following marquee properties:
• NFL
• The Masters
• NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship
• PGA TOUR
• SEC
• The PGA Championship
• National Women’s Soccer League
• UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League.
In May 2021, Paramount+ will stream Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In, which tells the story of the legendary manager of Manchester United, and one of the most memorable figures in European football.

Paramount+ will have two pricing tiers available to U.S. subscribers that marry the best of live and on-demand programming.
The premium tier, at $9.99, will be available with the full depth and breadth of live sports, around-the-clock news programming and world-class entertainment spanning Paramount+ originals to an expansive suite of current and library shows and movies. The offering will include CBS’ live linear feed and commercial-free on demand viewing, with 4k, HDR and Dolby Vision, mobile downloads and cross-platform dynamic play functionality.
An ad-supported tier will launch in June for $4.99 and offer the best in sports, news and entertainment. At that time, the current $5.99 plan will no longer be available for new users, but existing users will maintain grandfathered access. The ad-supported tier will feature a compelling offering of exciting Paramount+ originals, marquee sports content including live championship-level soccer (including UEFA games) and live NFL games, breaking news through CBSN and an extraordinary collection of content, including the full suite of current and library CBS shows available on demand.
World Soccer Talk has confirmed with CBS that the ad-supported tier will feature all live soccer matches.
Both Paramount+ tiers will feature a seamless user interface, enhanced curation and discovery, personalized homepages, content categories and central hubs for ViacomCBS’ brands. Additionally, each subscription option will include parental control capabilities and up to six individual profiles.
Paramount+ will feature entertainment from ViacomCBS’ portfolio of brands and production studios, including BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Pictures and the Smithsonian Channel. Paramount+ will also feature the 24/7 streaming sports news service, CBS Sports HQ.
In total, Paramount+ will feature a catalog of more than 30,000 episodes, 2,500 movie titles and over 1,000 live sporting events, plus around-the-clock news coverage with live streams of local affiliates in over 200 markets across the U.S. and the 24-hour streaming news service CBSN.

Fanatiz is a great service, La liga, Copa Libertadores and Colombian Futbol (Santa Fe is not one of the biggest teams – which are Nacional and Junior, but can’t wait to see how they perform in Libertadores).
They also have Portuguese, Argentina, Central America and Brazil soccer
CBS commentary for Champions League is superb, the mix of ex-players, Belgium national team manager and Kate is a good mix of soccer knowledge and a fun atmosphere (+ their on field/stadium talent is also well balanced).

Since the Brasileirao has come to an “exciting” and a “GRAND” finale end, also, the Argentina Primera Division has begun week 3 of its tournament! When is Paramount going to broadcast the matches! The $5.99 has life local TV channel while the $4.99 does not. So I bought a yearly contract for $60 for the add supported $5.99 per month and I hope they will allow me to renew the same package. In any case the only difference NOW between the two offered packages is one has the live local TV station included which is the case in the greater Washington DC area and the cheaper version does not have it. $9.99 gets you add free except during some live events plus local TV station, $4.99 gets you commercials and no local TV station.

When will they start showing Argentine Primera Division matches? Now or the start of next season?
I have been re-evaluating all my streaming options, decided to drop Fubo (may pick them back up in the fall for NFL Redzone)
1. Sling World Sports, beIN and willow (cricket)
2. ESPN+, ton of soccer and a lot of cricket
3. Thinking about getting Peacock for EPL (have antenna for NBC) will only miss matches shown on NBCSN but I’m not a huge EPL fan so this is okay.
4. Already have CBS All-access for Champions League but now Argentina aka Boca Jr in English!!
5. So do I keep Fanatiz for basicly GOLTV????? I do like Ecuador and Uruguay leagues…….
But what I dislike the most is now I’m looking at 5 different apps to watch the sports I love, wish they could be combined into one app that has access to all these different apps……

@KL. Good for soccer fans if all the leagues go to ESPN or CBS? I guess that depends on what soccer fans you talk to, or what league they primarily follow.
There are some soccer fans that simply like to watch as much soccer as possible from any euro league (get it all from one place) but these don’t really deep dive past the top 4 or 6 clubs of each league.
However, what appeals for some soccer fans is having a network provider that has exclusive rights to a particular league (like EPL with NBC or LaLiga with beIN sports) because they give it priority and do that deep dive and cover all the clubs (I don’t mean just air the matches, I am talking full analysis of these matches of ALL clubs from the studios, including transfer windows etc).
If anyone is at all paying attention, they will see that ESPN for example does NOT do a complete deep dive into all 20 clubs of the EPL, which is the most popular league for soccer fans in the US.
I primarily follow EPL, but do have an interest in the other leagues and follow the Champions League. I don’t at all see it as a good thing for EPL to go to a network that already is covering multiple euro leagues and just skim the surface of covering the clubs from the studios. And exclusive priority coverage by one network is good for a league – which is why EPL will seriously consider not moving away from NBC.
I understand all the complaints of split coverage from NBC / Peacock, with matches ‘behind a paywall’ etc, but with EPL as popular as it is, you’ll see this same thing with any other network provider (ie ESPN and CBS). So I for one hope NBC extends the EPL contract beyond 2022. Everything and all in on place is not necessarily not a good thing. Unless you just watch matches and don’t care at all about storylines and diving deep into a league or simple only follow one very rich top 4 club.

The EPL and La Liga rights could definitely be huge as far as who is in the streaming wars. If they both go to either ESPN or CBS that could knock out NBC and beIN Sports from the race. This would be good for soccer fans because CBS and ESPN are big media companies who can promote these leagues. La Liga would get a lot more exposure at these channels than beIN Sports. The general public doesn’t know beIN Sports exists.Also, the fact it would be only two you’d have to sign up for is good. Not to mention the entertainment options.

Agree with Eric. Certainly seems we’re heading in the direction with NBC, ESPN, and CBS being the main soccer holders. At least FOX has the World Cup for the next two tournaments (shrug emoji).

Now for clarity purposes let me make sure I have the following correct:
1. Compared to Fanatiz, P+ Has the English Language rights while Fanatiz has the Spanish for Argentine, then Portuguese for the Brasileirão?
2. CBS picked up what once belonged to FOX vis-a-vis the CONCACAF WC Qualifying matches played outside US and Mexico, and therefore has the away matches of US and Mexico.
3. So are the CONCACAF WC Qualifiers held within the US and Mexico tied to the MLS Rights? Or did I read that wrong?

Either way this really is starting to follow my prediction of CBS/P+ becoming the premier partner of CONCACAF in due course. The revamped/extended CCL coincides with the projected new TV contract in ’23.

At this rate, it looks like CBS, NBC, and ESPN will be the major players for soccer TV rights in the US. Wouldn’t be surprised to see CBS get the Serie A rights either.

@KL that is certainly possible for CBS to show Boca-River on that day since the Players Championship in golf will be on NBC and March Madness doesn’t start until March 18th. In fact CBS should show Boca-River in the afternoon as a way to transition into Selection Sunday for March Madness which takes place in the evening East Coast time.

This is great news about the Brazilian league because apart from Brazilian Cup matches shown on FS2, I haven’t been able to watch the league since it was on GolTV a decade ago. As for the CONCACAF rights (which includes the US matches), this indicates to me that CBS/Paramount+ are serious about the getting the full US national team rights and MLS from Fox when the contract is up next year.

I just realized this: CBS timed this perfectly because Boca Juniors play River Plate on March 14th. Maybe, fingers crossed, they can broadcast that game on CBS to promote their soccer coverage on Paramount+.

Umm…wow! This is certainly interesting. That’s another hit at beIN Sport’s tv rights. I was thinking about getting Fanatiz but this may change my mind, especially with the March International window coming up and the UCL & UEL knockout rounds ongoing. I only wish they had Copa Libertadores.That’s a huge hit at Fanatiz considering they were just showcasing AFA Play. Hopefully the price doesn’t change much.
Now, in english, Fanatiz will only have:
-Ligue Un
-La Liga
-Copa Libertadores
-World Cup Qualifiers
-And a few niche leagues/competitions.
I also hope they put games on CBS and CBSSN.

Thanks for the scoop on the pricing tiers. Still a bit hard to follow what the benefit is for the higher priced tier for those of us who already pay for cable or a streaming service equivalent (fubo, YTTV etc) that gives us access to the! CBS network. Sounds like we can downgrade from $6 to $5 a month and get all the soccer?
The thing I most want is for Paramount+ to upgrade ita streaming service to espn+ ability to pause and rewind live games, including the ability to start an in progress game from the beginning (or wherever a paying customer would prefer to watch)!
