fuboTV acquires rights to Serie A in Canada plus Coppa Italia

Serie A in Canada

When it comes to Serie A in Canada, fuboTV now has exclusive English-language rights to much of the Italian soccer landscape. In the newly announced deal, the service will provide Serie A, Coppa Italia, and the Supercoppa Italiana in Canada.  While specific terms were not initially released, the partnership is a multi-year deal.

Serie A on fuboTV in Canada

fuboTV is a sports-first TV streaming service. Their standard set of channels includes over 80 channels, many of which revolve around sports.

Now, Italian soccer is available to Canadians subscribed to the service. With this deal being so fresh, there are certain limitations. For example, the service announced that there will be approximately five Serie A games shown per week. This likely means the major teams like Juventus, AC Milan, Inter, Roma and Napoli appear on fubo. However, there are still 10 games each gameweek, meaning that, as of now, there will be five missing games. But, fubo did also say they expect the number of English-language broadcasts to increase as the season progresses.

For those interested in what channels the games are on, they are on fubo’s own channels. fubo Sports Network has a number of channels to distribute content. In Canada’s case, Serie A games for gameweeks three and four were on fSN Canada 3, 4 and 5.

The same likely holds true for the Coppa Italia, Italy’s major domestic tournament.

In the Coppa Italia, teams from Serie A, B and C compete. The 44-team tournament stretches throughout the league season. This likely means some games will not be broadcast or findable as easily.

In the case of the Supercoppa Italiana, the one-game championship contested between the winners of the league and cup happens on Jan. 20, 2022. The game between Juventus and Inter Milan will be available on a fubo Sports Network channel in Canada.

Significance of the Deal

David Gandler, co-founder and CEO of fuboTV talked about the opportunity Italian soccer provides the service.

“With Canadians cutting the cord at an increasing pace comparable to the U.S. market, according to a report by Boon Dog Professional Services, we see a tremendous growth opportunity for fuboTV.”

“Our mission is to attract Canadians looking for low-cost, consumer friendly offerings to our premium sports-first live TV streaming platform.  Today’s agreements for Serie A and Coppa Italia bring two of the most prestigious international soccer brands to fuboTV, further differentiating our platform with exclusive live sports that Canadians can’t watch anywhere else, and at a low price point.”

Luigi De Siervo, Serie A’s CEO, also weighed in on the deal:

“We are very proud to announce the agreements with fuboTV to broadcast Serie A, the Coppa Italia, and the Supercoppa Italiana. Thanks also to the partnerships with Infront and S&T Sports Group, all the fans of Italian football in Canada will be able to follow our competitions with the same passion as always.”

Do not be surprised by the announcement of this deal. The streaming service recently acquired rights to exclusively stream South American World Cup 2022 qualifiers here in the United States.

In fact, fuboTV began as a way to serve soccer fans in the world.  However, the company quickly grew to become one of the premier and complete streaming services in North America.  Still, it is one of the more pricier options. Regardless, fuboTV offers a wide variety of TV, movies, and live sports (especially soccer).

i have a feeling RAI north america is going to lose many customers. i find it so ironic that the italian tv platform for italian culture and programming (the calcio rights) to be viewed abroad is being bought out by foreign entities.
