Last week’s top-of-the-table clash put Manchester City well on the path for another Premier League crown. Simultaneously, Chelsea’s defeat at the Etihad appeared to drop the blues out of the title race.
Now, Chelsea looks to hold on to a spot in the Champions League. There are a number of teams fighting for that fourth spot this season, and Chelsea looks to build on its position just above that this weekend. Its opponent is Tottenham, in one of the London derbies.
Antonio Conte, who won a Premier League title with Chelsea, has Tottenham fighting for European positioning, especially after a dramatic victory over Leicester City midweek. Moreover, Spurs have games in hand due to several issues regarding COVID-19. The contest between Chelsea and Tottenham could go a long way in both sides’ quests for Champions League qualification.
Two teams battling with Tottenham in the table are Manchester United and West Ham. Inconsistency could be the key word for both these sides. A solid run of form ends with a confusing draw or loss. The Red Devils battle West Ham at Old Trafford on Saturday. The first time these two played, drama ensued. A match-winning penalty save by United’s David de Gea secured all three points down in London.
The two main contenders for the Premier League title this season have relatively calm weekends. Manchester City travel to Southampton while Liverpool take on Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace.
It could also not be a bad idea to look down at the relegation battle. Getting things started this weekend, Norwich, currently in the relegation zone at 18th, faces Watford, occupying 17th. Both sides only got promoted this past season, and the drop is a serious threat.
NBC’s studio coverage rolls on in the expected times with Rebecca Lowe hosting alongside Tim Howard and Robbie Mustoe before, between and after each game.
EPL commentator schedule for January 21-23
Much to fans’ delight, Goal Rush returns during the 10 a.m. window on Saturday. There are only three games in that slot, but those are some of this weekend’s most significant games for league positioning.
Also, do not forget that NBCSN is not a channel anymore. All Premier League games this weekend are either on USA Network, NBC or Peacock Premium.

@greg You are wrong about Bundesliga. All season, Bundesliga games always start broadcasting 10 minutes before kick-off. Only exceptions are when the the ESPN FC crew do longer pre/mid/post-show like today in Hertha-Bayern. But those are exceptions and were very few (less than 5 in the current season I guess). About LaLiga, I don’t know.

@azer – I notice the same things on the La Liga & Bundesliga matches on ESPN+ that aren’t featured matches, like the last kickoff on Sundays for La Liga. Starts not to long before kick-off, though at least you mostly get the announcer doing a minute or two of intro and then giving line-ups. But yeah, it’s something the need to do better with on Peacock. And still don’t understand why they don’t go to the studio show for halftime on those matches.

AEW caters to “real” wrestling fans and they struggle to reach the same numbers as WWE. If networks and leagues cater only to “real” fans of their sport, then it’ll be a huge struggle to make money.

The coverage of the Premier League on Peacock begins 10 minutes before kickoff. Today, the MNU vs WHU game began exactly at 10AM ET without any lineups, instead Rebecca Lowe come on to tell us about all the games available at the 10AM ET window. I clicked on the game at 9:50AM ET hoping to hear the voice of Ian Crocker and Leon Osman but nothing happened. I sat waiting, thought the game was postponed due to Covid or something else. The MNU vs WHU game was not televised, so why mess with it? I’m sure many of you had the same experience this morning.

It was awkward hearing the commentor scolding the villa guys for celebrating, and they were not taunting at all. Tim Howard showed some actual emotion almost anger rebutting those comments about the players. good for him. NO fan in the stands should throw anything on the field of play. scary..

Jon Champion is a great commentator but it was ill-judged to keep going on about Villa players being provocative by leaping into the air after they had been injured by bottles from the Everton fans. A frankly stupid piece of commentary and Tim Howard was right to call out his colleague.

@Ra. Btw… I can’t even really provide an informative opinion about ESPN’s match presenters, since I don’t watch too many matches from there. But to suggest they are so incredibly better than those that do EPL matches is so silly. After all, most of those are the world feed announcers – doing CL matches as well.

@nosferatu – I didn’t realize it either, and maybe it’s just specific to the browser and Roku, but a couple of times I’ve joined far into a match or the 2-hour Sunday studio show (which now seems to be an hour again) and couldn’t go back more than 60 minutes.

I agree with Nosferatu! Between the world feed presenters on Peacock aired live matches and NBC’s studio crew with Arlo and Graeme Le Saux / Lee Dixon doing the high profile matches, it’s top notch. The criticism by @Dave Churchman is way off and lacking any real substance of objectivity. His quote: “Their on air presenters are poor compared to a classy ESPN team.” What!? Oh you mean, Steve Nicol or Craig Burley?? They are classy?! That’s hilarious. And btw… I don’t mind them and watch ESPN FC regularly, but that quote was very funny. Thanks for the laugh.

@greg, I didn’t realize you could only rewind 60 minutes, but just having the DVR functions is a big positive now. And it seems they maybe are streaming at 60fps?
Between those things and how quickly replays are posted (which makes the 60 minute rewind less problematic, IMO), they’re starting to get things right. I honestly don’t get the criticism like that from Dave here. Arlo is polarizing, sure, but I’d take NBC’s full slate of broadcasters over ESPN’s any day when you include studio. (And I don’t even get the rant about expensive shows like Friends–that’s on HBO Max!)

NBC are a third rate outfit compared to ESPN+. They are broke. Shut down nbc sports. Cant afford the sky sports news feed any more. Spent their money populating peacock with dud shows buying the rights at inflated prices (like friends). The peacock business model is a failure as comcast give it away. They paid too much for upcoming Prem League rights. Their on air presenters are poor compared to a classy ESPN team. Arlo hurts your head to listen to. NBC are in really deep trouble.

Starting to notice a pattern where Sunday matches are mostly or all on Peacock, even the big matches. I wouldn’t mind as much if it were easier to start from the beginning – at least via a browser or Roku I can only go back 60 minutes max – or a free DVR feature of some sort, even with limited space and the match goes away once the replay is posted. But as is, it’s essentially a service reduction, especially for people on the west coast.
